Also you're right about the Trickfish just sounding great flat. I have spoken to Ryan at Trickfish and he insists it is completely flat with all dials at noon. I find you don't need to do much to get a nice tone and even at extreme settings the amp never sounds harsh or in musical.
-
Just to chime in on the loudness of the Trickfish. It's plenty loud enough for wedding type/function gigs and also stays solid when pushed and competing with Marshall stacks... Even then it wasn't maxed out and was running just with the 8ohm cab. One thing I should mention is that I tend to mostly play with professional musicians and usually find that we are sensible with stage and rehearsal volumes, so maybe I haven't had to compete with a guitarist with two 4x12 Randall stacks and no PA support 😉

If you are interested in Trickfish I have my rig for sale in the amps for sale forum. I literally feel insane selling but I just have a desire to put myself through mysery lugging around a Hellborg rig!!

So my club cab arrived. I'm completely amazed how clear and articulate this is. It's quite strange and I've never heard a 1x15 like it. Clearer than a 4x10 I would say. Comparing the trickfish and the hellborg, the trickfish seems to have more low mid and a slightly fatter tone, more vintage I guess by comparison. Whereas both cabs are very articulate, the Hellborg seems to have less roundness in favour for note clarity where the Trickfish offers a pillowy response... This could maybe be due to the Hellborg not going as low as the Trickfish. I like both, I'm aware the Hellborg has not been broken in too so I'm going to spend time with it and get to know it, and also see how it combines with the lo cab Another note... The cab is rated 250w but is noticeable louder so I think there must be some magic going on there in terms of speaker efficiency and getting the most out of the power amp..

As an owner of the hellborg pre and power amp before the price reductions I wouldn't say this was a piece of kit just for players who like Zing! I mean, yes you have the control to go for that sound and it's easy to get but the clarity of the preamp and the eq enables you to essentially shape your tone, whether it's zingy and piano tone like or more thumpy, warm and old school. It just offers a lot more clarity to your sound. I also find it's how the amp feels to play in to that is different to other amps. Yes there are great amps at the same price point and lower, and I have played a vast amount of those amps and they all get the job done and are all great... I have no objections to using the behringer ultrabass, great amp for the money! With amps at the higher price point, yes there is very little difference in quality of sound. Put side to side with my trickfish - it was extremely close, but the hellborg felt just a little warmer whilst they trickfish was a bit dryer sounding, and in a live situation probably not very noticeable. However, when DI'd the clarity of the hellborg was eye opening, my trickfish has a very nice DI but the hellborg was just incredibly detailed and open in comparison. Despite this I still love both amps, with the trickfish being the favourite of all the class d amps ive used. and yes at the original price of these amps I would have never entertained buying one - i got mine in a trade!! I think it's just a unique piece of gear that UAD will probably model in 20 years, with dodgy flickering light and scratches in the aluminum face plate!

I think you have put me off buying one! I gig the hellborg and I can just about manage it lugging it around in the gator case.. tho any walk of 100m or more can become quite a work out! It looks really cool tho. I'm thinking of further down the road buying a LWA1000 and using it for it's power amp. It wouldn't be the same but it would keep things lighter whilst being from the same school of thought and engineering of Hellborg

very cool. my club cab is arriving today and lo cab tomorrow. I have my hellborg rig - pre and mono 500 - in a gator case which is already pretty heavy.... how heavy is the hellborg sleeve?

Moving on my Way Huge Pork & Pickle as it's flavour of overdrive isn't quite what I am after and not finding too many opportunities for the fuzz side at the moment... despite most of my favourite bass players using them!! In immaculate condition, with the rubber feet included along with the manuals etc, stickers and badges, cool box. Pedal has two strips of black velco on the bottom. Sounds great, blend in either overdrive or fuzz with a neve style preamp which gives you nice tones from subtle to extreme. Just not what I'm looking for right now. Internal controls allow you to tweak the sound further. £120 plus £5 P&P

I think the Marshall made ones have different handles. Looks American made too me. Great cabs.

BOSS AB-2 2 WAY SELECTOR SWITCH PEDAL - £25 Excellent condition, has I think two rechargeable batteries inside. I'll double check that! Used for a month on a gig where I needed to switch between electric bass and synth. Can also be used in reverse - so two sources input to one output. The diagram on the pedal actually explain that a lot better! I think I still have the box for this somewhere, if not I will use a replacement box to post it in, Definitely one of the prettier Boss pedals! NOTE ** THIS DOESN'T RUN ON 9V POWER*

Pigtronix Mothership 2 - Analogue Synth Pedal in immaculate condition, boxed with 18v power supply and manual £200 plus £10 p&p or local pickup from Cardiff. ***Price drop to £190 plus £10 p&p*** This is an incredible pedal and the best analogue synth pedal I have used and you can get some really nice fat analogue bass sounds that track really well as well as some of the more wild sounds. You can hook up an expression pedal with the mothership 2 to control certain parameters and it also has a sub out so you can get all the huge low end going to the PA and not crushing your amp! It really does sound incredible and is a very nice, well made solid bit of kit. It has velcro on the bottom, and spent about a month on my board before taking it off after deciding to try and move away from effects and focus more on my actual playing. It's a really fun pedal I just can't justify having it sitting on a shelf looking cool as it deserves to be used for creating huge synth sounds!

Well I have caved and now have the Club Cab on its way and have just ordered the Lo Cab too. I even tried to barter on the price haha... didn't work. haha
-
Yeah that's what I'm uncertain about. Might be worth contacting them, could be that they've just bought old stock from Warwick?
-
I was thinking about selling mine until I saw this today. I shot Warwick an email and this is Thomann selling old stock as they no longer make the amps. So once it's gone it's gone I guess. Almost tempted to buy a cab !

Hi Daf, Well the strings never did arrive and when the shop that was fulfilling the order tried to send out a replacement set they were told by the distributor that the guy who made the strings was no longer making them, and they were looking for somebody else to make them. Don't know how much of that is true, but they refunded me straight away. Maybe you will have a better idea? I was going to just buy some spirocores but have been too busy to sort it out. If there is a way of purchasing a set of polychromes please let me know. Cheers Will
-
I'm eagerly awaiting delivery of a set of Polychromes to change the strings that came with my Strunal bass. I have no real experience of double bass strings other than putting on a set of spirocores in the last decade on a crappy school bass I was given... But I chose these as they sounded nice on Dafs SoundCloud clips and because the strings are made in Wales. I'm not into patriotism but it's not often you find something musical being crafted in South Wales! One thing I would add... Don't order from the innovation website if you want to get them in a hurry. They seem to use a third party system that has to locate the strings in a shop and then get them to ship them out. Been waiting since Thursday for them after being notified they had shipped. Hopefully they'll arrive eventually!!

Is it me or is dan/dood starting to look a lot like Bryan Beller?

Thanks again EBS_freak.... actually what is your name? I'm Will. haha. Really appreciate the advice, makes a lot of sense. I ordered some KZ monitors to get me through for the next few months hopefully at-least. I figured if I go for a decent set later, these will be a good back upset. That's if I ever get them, myhermes seem to have had an issue mid-delivery which has lead me to a morning of getting amazon to sort it out. Hopefully they will now arrive today. With the PA - I think it's a decent if quite old system ( must be getting close to be 15 years old possibly) can't recall the brand but it's two subs and two tops. The whole band goes through the PA, electric drum kit, 3 brass, 2-3 vocals, bass DI, mic'd guitar cab, sometimes a keyboard too. The desk is an Allen and Heath Zed 16? I think. As far as I can remember it has 3 aux outs (tried looking at the manual online last night but it wouldn't load). I don't think Jules has used her in ears for a while now, not sure why. I think possibly at the moment our drummer may have started using the feed from the desk for his monitoring so it's just me and him on aux 1 and 2 and I'm assuming the 3rd aux is going to the onstage monitors. So would the aux outs be in mono or stereo? I'm not sure if the feed coming from the roland kit would be stereo either as I think it's just coming in to the desk via one lead. I am just using the DI out on my hellborg pre at the moment - i have used preamp/cab sim pedals in the past but the sound of my hellborg pre is really nice for clean funk stuff, I did use my tech 21 dug for a bit which I loved but was a bit too much! I would love for everyone to be on in-ears, with no onstage sound, I would love to be able to send a ampeg type channel and hellborg channel to the desk to blend a bass tone - i suppose I could do that now, but the amount of gear/cables go on it's simpler that I dont. I have been thinking of getting a HPF to run in the effects loop of the hellborg to perhaps shape it - if i run the trickfish cab with the tweeter wide open it would maybe translate well out the cab and my in ears. Had a look at the mooer radar last night that could be a possibility. Yeah ultimately I think getting a better desk and getting other musicians in the band to go to IEM is outside of my control. Hopefully when the next gear upgrade is needed we can have a serious talk about making the switch over completely!

Hi EBS_freak. Thanks for your detailed reply back! I'm wondering if you are the same EBS lover that knows the singer in the function band I work with.. Julia Coles? The custom mould monitors I had were Minervas... which I know a lot of people have had issues with, they eventually crapped out anyway. Lets just say one company said they couldn't do my impressions because of wax build up and the other company didn't say anything about it... Anyway they were free and the band I was in didn't always use them live, I preferred not to use them back then and in a proper music venue, playing rock music probably still prefer to use floor monitors/side fills. I got back in to in-ears again mainly due to playing a lot of function/wedding gigs and just getting fed up with terrible rooms, awful onstage sound, close proximity to loud instruments such as brass etc! I don't want to go with moulds at this stage just because I was perfectly happy with the seal from the silicon (?) tips with the shures and also the expense is one I could do without right now. I didn't really get a break in the seal unless I laughed - which during a performance is rare - i hardly smile.. I am after all a bass player! I think I will go for the zs10s and experiment with some tips. I think if others in the band move to in-ears eventually and we get a desk that is capable of offering decent stereo mixes it may be worth going for the very cool 64 ears or JH audio products. If I don't have to have a high quality bass cab at a gig then I can invest that money in to some IEMS! I'm not going to do critical listening with any IEMs as I have nice studios monitoring headphones at home im very used to listening with. I think the signal of my bass coming off the desk is post-eq, so it's been eq'D for the PA and is far too bright for me in my ears - I need to research the desk and see if it's possible to get the send sent pre eq to the aux. Soundchecks are usually rushed and chaotic due to the nature of the events we play... i'd be interested to see if I can get a stereo mix from the desk to the presonus hp2 - although I feel it can't accommodate it for some reason!
-
Cool, yeah ive read about them on here but wasn't sure if I would be just putting off buying a more expensive set. However I am tempted to give them a try... I've seen a few mentions that the seal wasn't great and was the biggest issue... I'm guessing that would be solved with some comply tips? What tips do you use with yours? Where did you buy yours from, I've found them on Amazon for about £50 for the 5 driver versions.

Hi, I'm looking for new IEMs. I managed to step on my Shure 215s and knacker them at a gig over the weekend so think this is a good time to upgrade a bit. I have had in the past custom moulds IEM when I was touring a lot and found them uncomfortable and wasn't impressed with the seal. I think I have quite small ear canals.. I struggle to get foam earplugs in but found the rubber tips with the 215s fitted well and gave a really good seal. So I'm looking for universal fitting monitors with a max budget of £350. I've been doing a lot of reading and read a lot of mixed reviews of the UE 900s and the Fender Ax7? I have also been considering Westones UM30s and earsonics. I don't want to spend more as I am likely to break them at some point! There also seems to be a lot of contradicting advice on how many drivers are best etc I'm running wired to the desk via a presonus headphone mixer and splitting my Di out from my Hellborg pre to the desk and to the presonus so I can mix in my bass my self (I found getting the bass from the desk didn't work for what I like to hear) I found the 215 by Shure actually ok - I think maybe I found it quite hard to balance my bass with drums and with guitar, synth etc as well in the mix I found there was a lack of space and definition and it could get quite loud/fatiguing. Any advice on what I should really consider and really not consider would be much appreciated. I also found playing without them at function/weddibga type venues hellish so don't have the time to go with moulds at the moment. Thanks Will

Yeah, it is heavy but whilst I'm able to carry it around I might as well enjoy such high end gear and the tone quality is undeniable. So clear yet far, cuts tight through. I would like to compare it to the top of the range trickfish. Wonder if their top of the range power section sounds better than the .5k
-
Had this for a few weeks now after acquiring it in a trade, just been sorting a case for it! I thought my trickfish bullhead was the holy grail amp, then I played through this and was totally blown away! I've done very unscientific comparisons and the trickfish gets close but is just a little bit dryer in tone and less articulate compared to the warmth, girth and clarity of the Hellborg. I tried the bullhead into the power amp which did sound very nice and gigged the preamp into the bullhead last week. But its the combination of the pre and Poweramp that really is something special. Yes it's heavy, but not that heavy it's unmanageable I think probably 24kg without the case. Sounds great with the trickfish cab and it looks very cool. It's also has a nice tube like feel when playing through it, almost like a nice subtle compression. Now to decide if I should keep the trickfish bullhead .5k as it is a marvellous amp!
