1.
I've used a Boss TU2 for years. It works.
+1 Mine got stolen and I bought a Danelectro one, but it didn't like low E, so I got another TU2 I've had it a long time with no problems.
2. I thought I'd give a quick update on this, I've been playing with a function/wedding band a lot over the last few months (which is why I've been so quiet here) and I'm really comfortable with the bass now. I stand by the fact that the John East pre is amazing, but the kneck humbucker and coil tap are really great too. Particularly in a function band which plays rock, pop, funk and ceilidh in one gig. The stingray bridge pup is still my favourite sound in my original band (rock/techno crossover), and for the funk music in the covers band. The 2 humbuckers are great for most rock, a bit like my G&L L2500 but less agressive, but they can sound nice and deep too. It has a nice deep (bass) tone. The 2 pups on as single coils are great for some slower numbers, and give lovely clarity for high end stuff. Either single coil alone is a bit noisy, and the kneck humbucker is too wooly sounding, but it really has worked out well overall. It now does everything I need it to.
3. Colin lives in New Zealand now, but he's still great to deal with. I bought some pick-ups and a few other bits off him with no problems at all. NZ to Scotland, quickly and safely, even though we're both from Cork?! Cheers Colin
4. I just bought a standard SR5 a few months ago, I wish this was around then. It's lovely, have a bump.
5. They have furry muppet hands, the swedish chef has bare naked human hands!!! I don't see why it's strange though, Rowlf is a dog, of course he has furry hands. The swedish chef is a people from sweden who cooks, so he has human hands, hurgdy gurdy.
6.
That said, I would be quite happy with an ucking fugly bass if the other two factors weighed in at 10.
I hate the look of Stingray 5s, but I own one because it plays and sounds great. Never a fan of rics or Warwicks, but never tried either.
7.
I'm pretty much endorsed by Bic. They're me biro of choice.
I get the really cheap 10 pack of biros in tesco, I want to use them for a while before I buy something decent like Bic. Do Bik have a budget brand they make in china? I could buy the budget one and upgrade it gradually.
8. My band use backing track for synths and drums, we use a laptop and cubase for the backing track, though I keep a copy on my phone and on a minidisc just in case. Cubase is great for programing beats, or you can download free samples, and having individual tracks for drums, synths and keys means we can change levels to suit venues, and send different parts to different monitors (all I need is drums in mine).
9.
The only negative is that I can't check my email on stage with the POD, which is a total bummer isn't it.
Haha.
10. I've been using it for a week now, 2 auditions, 2 gigs and 1 rehearsal. It is lovely, possibly my favourite bass sound ever is both humbuckers on, treble and mid set around zero and bass boosted slightly. Both on as single coils give a really lovely tone too. Both auditions were playing covers, and all very different, so I managed to get a really good sound for all of the songs. The gigs and rehearsal in my originals band though, much as I love the variety, what sounded best with full band, and cut through was the bridge humbucker on it's own, and just use the John east pre to change the sounds for different songs. I love the finished bass, and I have no doubt I'll use all the pickup options in different bands, gigs and recordings, and the Nordstrand pups are lovely, however I think bang-for-buck my favourite alteration is definitely the John East Pre, it really is amazing. I think it will be the first thing I do to any Stingray, or any bass, I own in the future.
11. Does anyone know of a good tech/repair place in or about Edinburgh to try and sort the problem?
12. I'd say the Tartan Heart festifal in Beladrum near inverness. We've played there for the last 2 years and it's been great both times. There's a nice atmosphere, lots of interestin bands and people, and for some reason we seem to go down really well there and get a huge crowd. Hopefully we'll be there again this year, but even if we don't play I think I'll go just to experience it.
13. I have an EBS HD350 and a Proline 4X10 and the tweeter has started distorting badly when I turn it on, the head and cab sound fine without the tweeter, but as soon as I turn it up it starts to distort. I'm guessing it's either the crossover, or the tweeter itself that's causing the problem. Has anyone any advice on how to isolate the problem, and what parts I need to fix it. There is one little odd twist, when I use the cab with my SWR 350Bass head, there doesn't seem to be any distortion from the tweeter, but my HD350 doesn't distort my SWR cab. Any ideas????
14. I didn't go to the show, it's too far and I had other commitments, but I understand how irritating the noise must have been, and the mediocre playing by 100s of people at the same time, I don't understand the hatred for slap bass though. I play bass, I like to try and be as good as I can at all styles, it keeps it interesting for me and makes it easier to find work in function bands. I don't slap a lot, but my ability to play the solo in "Call Me Al" got me a few well payed gigs recently, and I introduced RHCPs higher ground to the set too, which goes down really well when we play it. In my original band, rock/techno crossover, I use slap (sparingly) in a few songs and I play whatever I think will enhance the song, even if it means using a plectrum!!! Each to their own, but I think variety is the spice of life, when I'm practising at home I like to play and hard, fast and funky as I can, when I play covers I like to try and play them as they were written and when I play original songs I try and write a bass line that will sound good and hopefully be interesting too. All of which doesn't leave me with much time to get annoyed about other peoples style or taste.
15. I routed mine out, but to fit an extra humbucker, so I don't think I lost any weight. Sounds good though. You could just take loads out under the scratchplate and glue in a block of lighter wood
16.
Cannonball - The Breeders
This is stuck in my head now, it is a great intro.
17. I think Flea inspired me to start playing bass, but I got really enthusiastic for it when I learned "Lounge Act" by Nirvana it was the first song I thought myself and I still think it's a great bass line.
18. The wal is beautiful, the sandberg is lovely, I'm sure the parker is lovelt to play, but it's not as good looking as the others.
19. Here's my baby, it started life as a standard single pup SR5 with a natural finish It's got 2 Nordstrand pickups, a John East Preamp with bass, sweepable mid and treble controls, a (3 way) pickup selector switch and a coil tap switch. All the work, including the translucent blue finish was done by Chris Mcintyre at http://www.mcintyreguitars.com/ It's set up really nicely, and I love the finish, but more importantly it sounds amazing, the East pre is great it's almost too much control and with the bridge pup on it sounds like a Stingray, the neck pup is a bit boomier and together they sound exactly as I hoped it's mellower than a stingray but still agressive and ballsy. Running either pup as a sigle coil sounds a little thin, but it might work in certain band situations, but the 2 together as single coils sound lovely not quite a jazz but maybe a stingray/jazz hybrid. I still haven't spent alot of time playing with the tone controls, so I'm sure I'll fine tune all the combinations to sound even better.

I have an audition tonight and a rehearsal tomorrow, so I'll report back later but so far I love it.
21. Here's my Chris Larkin acoustic.
22. Both my guitarists use them to great effect, but they are always in drop D, actually one of them has 7 strings, so I have no idea how he's tuned, but they work well for what they do. I used to have a strat with a fender trem and if you looked at it funny it went out of tune, my current strat has a fixed bridge for that reason. I think I'm saying if you must have a trem, make it a lockable one so it stays in tune.
23.
Got the intonation spot on and the bridge saddles are in a perfect straight line too.
I once restrung my Precision and all the tuners were flat along the head when I tuned it up. It was great while it lasted. OOOO
