Carlsbro Cobra 90, Trace Elliot AH350 1x15 combo, Ampeg B15T (I really miss that amp), Ampeg SVT with Ampeg 4x10, Trace Elliot AH350 head with the above cab, the Ampeg head got nicked SWR Workingmans 350 head with SWR 4x10 cab, I didn't take the SWR cab to Scotland when I moved here from Ireland, but I have the head with an Ashdown 4X10 cab. I also use a vox headphone amp thing
Pre-owned is the way to go. I won't say second-hand, because there are some instruments that seem to have been going from Basschater to Basschater for years!
Pre-owned, or used is probably a better description of most of mine.

I think Flea used an old Jazz bass for alot of the californication era stuff, so you should be able to get close to his sound on your bass. I'm in the process of sorting out my Stingray 5 with new paint and pickups, but after that I'd like to put together a bitsa Jazz with a precision neck. Now, show us some photos of your bass.

I've never had a new bass, apart from my custom, because you get so much more second hand. It also makes me so much happier about customising them, seems silly to buy a new bass if you know there's things you're going to change straight away.

Hi Stuart, I'm in Edinburgh too. Let me know if I can help out.

Chris is a great friend of mine, he made me a beautiful Fretless acoustic, but most importantly he is a keen motorcyclist.
Jesus. What a total waste of my time that was. And what an irritating bastard.
Hahaha, he was a pain in the @$$, I'd have been impressed if he'd managed the guitar solo at the same time though.

I think you should just keep an eye on your tanglewood, make sure it's all working well and keep the £50 to put towards an aria or ibanez. You can pick up some lovely basses for under £200 in the for sale section, and £50 is a big chunk to put towards that. I have an Aria pro2 integra, and it is lovely to play, I replaced the P pickup, and disconnected the J, and now it sounds great too. I don't know much about Ibanez, but someone will be along soon.

I play in a band called Metaltech, a Rock Techno crossover, though I tend to be slightly on the funky side of bass playing. We try not to take ourselves too seriously, and we've been doing pretty well at festivals and getting alot of support slots for industrial bands. www.metaltech.me

Lots of valid opinions here, I love a straight cover played perfectly, but I love when a band make a song their own (Hendrix version of All along the Watchtower is the pinacle of this). The most important thing is the song, even writing original material, we have a song that has a bit of an AC/DC feel to it, and the bass is mostly thumping A, a little embillishment in the chorus, but still pretty simple. I tried to make it more interesting, but nothing drove the song as well a a simple root note.

Put an ad up in the sale section, you never know who wants what, or when, it might take a while, but you'll find someone willing to trade for something you want.

I use an SWR 350 workingmans head, and an Ashdown 4x10, I used to have the SWR cab to match the head, but when I moved to Edinburgh from Ireland it wasn't practical to bring it with me. I like the sound out of the head, but we supported a band recently and I used their EBS combo, and I think I'm hooked, but it's the only EBS amp I've used, so I need to try another to make sure it's for me. Anyone know a dealer nerar enough to Edinburgh? I'd also like to try a Gallien Kruger amp, I've never used one, but I've heard good things about them. I play a few different basses, in a few different bands, I like the size of my rig now, so what should I try? There's still a possibility I'll keep my SWR head and get a new cab, but I'd like to explore a few options, any help would be appreciated.

There's a preowned loadstone guitar for sale in Imported Instruments in Edinburgh, it looks nice enough, but it was preowned by Biffy Clyro, so they want £1500 for it, I haven't had a go as it's in a display case, so I think it's no longer a guitar it's a collectors piece.

I've just ordered a second nordstrand pickup for mine, it already has one, and a JohnEast pre, so I'll route a space for the second pup, shouldn't be too much work. I'll start work on mine next week, I'll start a thread once I get it going and you can see how easy or hard it'll be.

I feel dirty. Just ordered a Roadworn Jazz! pics added

I think it looks great, I have a 70s P that is a bit more worn than that, but the dings look similar to the real one's on the P. It's not too overdone, ok, it would be better (and cheaper) to offer a non-worn alternative, but it looks good, you like how it plays and sounds, so leave it as it is, and most importantly enjoy it. -
Do I win a prize?

Here's one by my band Metaltech, it's not really representitive of what we normally play, but you can hear the bass more than on any of our other youtube videos. NSFW lots of swearing. Here's a link to our channel, there are some better videos and songs there, but not much bass end in most. http://www.youtube.com/user/Metaltechtheband?feature=mhee#p/c/1/MnmDJAFI9Uk

Does anyone travel from Scotland to London??
EmmettC replied to munkonthehill's topic in General Discussion
I might be heading down for work in early February, let me know if you don't get it sorted sooner. -
I just bought a Bass Compactor pedal of Dave, aka Bottomfeed, I paid him yesterday, and the pedal arrived today, exactly as described. Great to deal with, thanks Dave.

I write about a third of our bands music, but most of the time someone comes up with an idea, and the band work through it together, In the past I've come up with a bass line that has ended up as a vocal melody, or I've come in with most of a song, but we've only used little pieces. I still find it more rewarding writing with a group, it's easier for someone else to judge your ideas and help shape them into something better. I write full songs on my own, that aren't suitable for the band, and I'm never as happy, or as confident in them. I also try to write on other instruments, I'm a terrible pianist, but sometimes writing on the piano is great, my hands don't have pre-learned-patterns they keep falling into, and I often record some basic guitar parts for chordal back up. Then show up at rehearsal where the band rip it apart and put it all back together differently and (usually) better.

I've been doing my own set-ups etc recently, not because of bad experiences, but most of the shop based people don't seem to want my business. I don't mind booking in for 2 weeks time, but some of them need you to leave it for 2 weeks. I have gigs to play. This is great though, because I'm no good with electronics, and I want to add an extra pup on my Stingray. I'd also like it repainted.

I don't have any missed opportunities as such, and no real regrets either, my only kind-of regret was taking my first full time job at 21, it lead to great jobs and I'm happy in my (non musical) career, but at the time I was playing with a very succesful cabaret act, a moderately succesful indie pop original band, playing for 4 singer song writers (of varying degrees of success) and playing & singing in my own hardcore band with 2 Bass players!!!! I left most of them soon after getting a job, and although none of them got very famous a few of them make a living playing music, and who knows what a few years of playing all the time could have lead to. A full time job meant a better basses and better motorbikes, I just wish I'd given music about 4 more years than I did.
