I'm trying to move my skill set from folk/pop in the direction of some hard rock and melodic metal. I would prefer a five string bass, but I'm open for awesome four strings as well.
Dingwall NG-2 is equivalent or only slightly less dough than the Sandberg, but is definitely worth consideration. The fanned frets give the low B a very long scale length so it's as clear as a bell and records great. I'm lusting after one myself. I would also look at the Yamaha BB range and see what Ibanez have to offer, there are some very nice basses with Nordstrand big singles, which are very meaty Jazz pickups.

New band, new board! Chain is tuner, Thumpinator, Discumbobulator, Effectrode PC-2A, Vulcan, TAFM, Le Bass, then Carbon Copy and Phase 90 (in the fx loop of the Le Bass). All sitting on a PT Metro 24 and powered by a Cioks DC5 underneath.

You only need a polarity reversing adapter if the pins in the power supply or socket are wired the opposite way around. Attach one to the wrong pedal and you could fry it. Most pedal power supplies are centre negative, but most supplies for general equipment are centre positive. I assume the poster above found a random 12V PSU and stuck an adapter on the end to make it usable with the Le Bass. I've heard others complaining of noise with their stock power supplies, fortunately this did not affect me, perhaps I got a different model since I bought it from Thomman and it's a European plug. Btw my Cioks DC5 powers it just fine even though it's supposed to need 500mA and the supply only delivers 300. I'm glad I ignored your request to sell it to you as I've just joined a band and it's now on the board!
-
Have you tested with the compressor as the only pedal in the chain?
-
Used mine direct to a mixer for a headphone jam/audition with a new band last night. Worked very well indeed, I can see this being my core tone (alpha side, minimum gain). Lots of experimenting with stacking combos to be done!

Just ordered the EHX. Initial reports from over the pond are very positive, at least one person had replaced their Wren & Cuff TFR with one!
Just to clarify (as I've just moved to DI my board...) If using fuzz would you consider it essential to use a cab simulator? I'm gonna be running my pedals into the Ampeg Classic Analog Preamp pedal then direct into a passive DI with no cab sim. I'm worried that I'll end up getting the evils from the sound guy at gigs...
Totally depends on the pedal and how much top end fizz it puts out, e.g. DI a Boss ODB3 and it will sound like a jar of angry bees. If you're talking about the Ampeg SCR DI, then I understand it has a speaker sim or low pass filter already built in. A decent sound man may be able to low pass your signal to around 5k for you if you talk to them anyway!

"Dad, I want to play bass, who should I listen to?"
dannybuoy replied to interpol52's topic in General Discussion
How bizarre is all this? I get the impression that a number of posters on this thread don't actually have children. The only answer that will actually get you anywhere is, "What/who do you like listening to? Fine, play along with that then." If I'd asked my father what to listen to if I wanted to hear great basslines, I'd have spent the next 20 years listening exclusively to Glenn Miller and Frank Sinatra. Your kids don't want to listen to "your" music. That's part of being your kids.
If I'd have listened to my Dad I would have ended up listening to Sabbath, Zep, Deep Purple, Rush and Yes. I ignored him and listed to Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth and RATM! -
It also sounds great set to 100% alpha, 0% gain as a dirty amp sim into headphones (or a PA). Just the right level of gain to fatten things up yet get very gnarly if you dig in. Slotted into the mix perfectly and no additional speaker sim required! 👍

Check out the Fender/Squier Duo Sonics or Mustangs perhaps? Quite a few to choose from here too: https://www.thomann....le_guitars.html https://www.gak.co.uk/en/mini-and-travel-guitars

Very Mike Kerr, UKLooney! You found the humbucker you were looking for then, where did you get it in the end, The Creamery?

This might be controversial for all you Marus fans, but in my opinion there's something very off putting about the body shape of those Jakes. The original Fender shape is beautiful, a design classic. I don't know but perhaps it makes good use of the 'Golden Ratio', French curves and all that. The Jake looks like someone tried to make a Precision template drawn freehand in one attempt just from memory. I'm not saying all P/J clones need to faithfully copy the original. For instance the new Sandberg shapes I find very nice indeed!

My Octabvre can do a low F# no problem. It doesn't sound very good to me, as I don't find notes that low very usable, but it tracks just fine. It can handle short or pulsing notes on the low E and F, but sustained notes glitch out. Moving down to the low B string, it can even do C#/D/D# no problem. If I pluck nearer the bridge or use a pick then tracking goes haywire, so a lot of it is down to technique too.

What's the signal chain for your core tone?
dannybuoy replied to Painy's topic in General Discussion
Yamaha BB1025X into a low gain overdrive (I keep flipping between a Bearfoot Blueberry, Pike Vulcan, Aguilar Agro and Darkglass Alpha Omega) into Orange Terror Bass into dual Ampeg SVT210AV stack. Pretty much always have the drive pedal on, it just sounds dull without one! -
That's where opinion is divided. Personally I prefer the tone of the OC-2 by a wide margin, but plenty of others have replaced their OC-2's with one with no regrets.
-
You will be able to get many synth effects out of the Zoom, but nothing approaching the OC-2. Try and find some demos to hear the OC-2 octave soloed on bass if you're not familiar with how it sounds!

New 'Alpha Omicron' on the way! https://www.talkbass.com/attachments/photo-8-19-17-1-04-13-am-png.1555823/

Check out the Wounded Paw range of blenders too. If you want the same level of wet/dry blend in all modes, then adding a simple blender like the Mosquite (or another LS2!) to your LS2 will work too!
-
They changed about 4 weeks ago according to a Talkbass thread, but could well have been earlier than that, and the volume issue might not have affected the whole range, so best to ask Tom. If you want an octave to fill out the sound with an added sub in the background then the COG is awesome. The tracking is stellar and being able to dial the tone right down to sub bass makes it blend really well. If you want to use it 100% wet, essentially just using it as a synth pedal and playing higher up to compensate for the difference in pitch, the Octabvre Mini just has a great solo voice that you can't get from the COG. Conversely, this punchy mid-heavy tone doesn't work as well as the COG when blended with clean, where a milder sound often works better.
-
Btw, word is the newer COGs now have more output volume, which fixes my biggest problem with the T16 I had. Al, there are just as many people reporting they think the COG is the best octaver they've ever had as there are those that were disappointed with it. You're just going to have to try one yourself, otherwise it's like conducting a survey to find out if you should try eating marmite!

Bear in mind a TM4 doesn't sound much like a Stingray due to the MM pickup being quite a bit close to the bridge. But the answer should be play both and get the one that sounds and feels best! You can play the 'Ray in store, was your friend's Sandberg a TM4 so you can compare?

Price is usually a poor indicator of performance, especially when the differences aren't that great. The biggest reason for those price differences are due to how and where they are manufactured, and how many they produce. E.g the Mooer Tender Octave outperforms the EHX Micro POG which cost 3 times as much!
