I would only turn up to a gig without an amp if I knew beforehand that they had good monitors or a desk capable of working with your IEM setup. Try and talk to the venue/soundman beforehand, and if you're not 100%, always take an amp as backup!

It's not just open strings that cause an issue with tapping, it's the other half of the string - acoustically, both ends of the string can vibrate which can sound dissonant, not usually a problem when plugged in though as the pickup only 'sees' the vibration from the other half of the string. I would assume that these things would mute your open strings a tad yes, but I guess the muting is less extreme than your common foam bridge mute.
-
Seems there are two totally different types of mute being confused here. These wraps that go at the headstock end are to dampen sympathetic resonance, where open strings, or the half of the string behind your fretting finger can create unwanted overtones. These won't give you a Motown sound, for that you need foam at the bridge end (or a wrap like the one pictured going round the strings near the bridge).

No problems with mine, and play a high output bass with a heavy hand that has been known to cause clipping issues in other pedals.

It might not be 'proper bass playing', but 'proper bass playing' is all about supporting and fitting in with all the other instruments. This guy is playing solo, so the rules don't apply, just simply making music, with a bass. In the context of a band, he may well choose to pump out some standard root notes, but that would make a pretty boring bass solo video!

Ashdown LB 30 Any Good??? Bassman - Ampeg B15
dannybuoy replied to Ghost Rider's topic in Amps and Cabs
I've not heard any bad reports about them.
Ok then, in the interests of balance, I had one for a while and it sounded terrible, I couldn't get rid of it quick enough! Sounded very harsh/brittle to my ears. I also tried a CTM15, which sounded OK with the gain all the way off at low master volume... but again sounded very harsh with the master volume pushed, and the gain knob seemed to just be a treble booster, the tone being unusably bright above 9 o'clock! I too was after a B15 vibe on the cheap and did not find what I was looking for. -
How do you tell if it's chrome or nickel?
Nickel has a duller, greyer finish. Sometimes it's hard to tell, but easier if you put them side by side.
Try a mixture of vinegar, green toilet duck and a little salt-don't be tempted to put it near a metal container-it will burn its way through aluminium - Tupperware works well
I actually tried this on a chrome Fender BBOT bridge, all that I got was a couple of blemishes where the chrome gave way to show a brass/copper colour underneath. It didn't look very reliced at all, then I read that this trick only works well on nickel!

I stack a pair of Ampeg SVT210AVs. It's stable as long as nobody bumps into it, but I could see it toppling over at some of the rowdier venues I've heard other members describe playing at!

As I understand, chrome is a lot harder to get a nice aged look than nickel. If you can get those tuners in nickel, do so!

Thunderbird pickup replacement (MOJO pickups)
dannybuoy replied to police squad's topic in Bass Guitars
I think these are the ones the guys over at LBO got moist over recently.
LBO? I have a set here, hoping to fit them into a 5 string Warwick Rockbass Streamer, since everything about that bass is perfect apart from the weak pups! They are quite long for 4 string pickups and the wick's string spacing is quite narrow so they should fit perfectly. -
Thunderbird pickup replacement (MOJO pickups)
dannybuoy replied to police squad's topic in Bass Guitars
Not seen those before. The recent stock TBird pickups are much darker sounding than the old vintage ones, so replacing them is a popular mod; the only ones I was aware of are Thunderbuckers, Mike Lulls, Seymour Duncans, and these cheap ones: http://www.eyguitarmusic.com/Thunderbird-Bass-Pickup-Vintage-Style-for-GibsonChromeNickel_p_2287.html -
Anyone with any experience of half rounds on a fretless?
dannybuoy replied to Marc S's topic in Bass Guitars
Tapewounds are roundwounds under the wrap btw, so will have similar tension. I always thought Chromes were high tension when I tried them ages ago on a P, but the set that turned up on this new fretless don't seem tight at all. Not sure if these are a different guauge or it's just the fact that I slide rather than bend strings on fretless so I don't notice it as much, but they are certainly easy to play with a very lively tone. -
Anyone with any experience of half rounds on a fretless?
dannybuoy replied to Marc S's topic in Bass Guitars
I'm a long time user of the Status half-rounds and just bought a fretless that came with a new set of Chromes on and have to say they are very similar! Tons of growling mwah from these. Another option is to try tapewounds. I have just ordered a set of La Bella white nylons from bass direct, the copper variant. They use transparent nylon instead of black and have a much brighter sound; the copper ones have a copper layer in there as well for a warmer sound and the gold ones are supposed to be somewhere in the middle. I searched for reviews of these of Talkbass and there was a guy that tried all 3 and rated the coppers as the best by far, so thought I'd give them a whirl! -
I used to run a Vintage Deluxe into a headphone amp as my practice setup and it didn't need a cab sim at all. The Darkglass pedals have quite a bit of filtering in them already making them usable for recording direct, especially the Vintage which is a lot darker than the B7K.

Reminds me of when my old band thought it would be a good idea to retune from drop-D to drop-C, playing all the songs in the same 'key', but not changing the vocals to match, so everything sounded out of tune!

Probably - the blurb says 1.6535" and the table below it says 1.5"! Doesn't look narrow in the pics. -

Technique: migrating from precision to musicman?
dannybuoy replied to Twigman's topic in Theory and Technique
First, raise the pickup, it shouldn't be sunk down that far. I find with both basses, the best sounding place to pluck is directly over the pickup - so I just play further back on a Ray compared to a P! However I find myself using more of a floating thumb technique lately, where my wrist or forearm resting on the bass serves as a pivot point. -
There's only one answer. Stick to what you love and suits your playing. I have never had any fear about my gear being damaged on a gig. If you're playing gigs like that I'd be more fearful for my own safety than that of a few boxes of wires. IMO Bergs are a far better cab than TC but in this "dangerous" world you seem to inhabit I'd still be as worried for those cabs. Again, if you are happy to play on a gig like you describe, your gear should be the least of your worries.
This. Looking at Berg cabs because you're worried about taking your Schroeders to dodgy dives doesn't make any sense to me! If you're playing in the sort of venue where you're worried about your gear getting nicked or damaged, you should surely be looking at cheap and cheerful alternatives!

This is not a fancy multi pedal, but it's the best feeling compact expression pedal I've used: https://www.jimdunlop.com/product/dvp4-7-10137-09463-5.do Also the Hotone Bass Press might be worth a look, not as nice feeling as the Dunlop, but it can be used as a standalone bass wah! The Source Audio Dual Expression looks like the one to go for, especially if you have any SA pedals. You can hook up two regular expression devices plus a SA pedal; not sure that you can switch the expression on and off, looks like it is always on for all connected devices though. For more fine control you'll want their Reflex pedal. There is the Moog MP-201, but it's big, expensive and hard to find. Not sure what other options there are?

Try plugging in another monitor or TV to see if it's just the built in screen.
