1. Malekko Diabolik gets my vote. I have a TAFM and love it, but never use the gate feature, it's not its strong point if you ask me.
2.
If I had spare 1k https://www.gak.co.uk/en/fender-steve-harris-precision-bass-in-west-ham-colours/112331?gclid=CPbqpIb3oNMCFccy0wodqLwPXg
Should be able to cover up that West Ham logo with the remaining £13 too!
3. I wouldn't make anybody a recommendation for a £1k bass without first knowing what kind of sound they want, favourite bands/bassists, etc. Growly, modern and aggressive or fat and old skool? Active/passive, how many strings? Classic looks or something a bit different?
4.
Makes sense to me. Now that I think about it I think Paul Young's recording of Daryl Hall's "Everytime You Go Away" employs a fretless bass guitar and it sounds awesome. Blue
Indeed it does, I've been after a fretless Stingray for a while now since seeing this! http://youtu.be/HnnewhuLuj8 Also check out some Pearl Jam: http://youtu.be/V3w7ixSNG_c
5.
Probably the very first one the link leads to (at least for me), about Rob Trujillo's 12 year old son playing bass for Korn on a forthcoming tour.
Top of the page says "Pearl Jam, Tupac and Joan Baez inducted into HoF", hence the confusion!
6. Thanks for the clips Jim! I'd be interested to hear the envelope filters, the Z-Tron from the previous generation was excellent but I wasn't a fan of the rest. I had assumed they would use the same old models from before but if you say the drives have improved then maybe the others have too!
7. Your link has a dozen stories on it, which one?
8. I wouldn't expect to see an ad asking for a fretless player any more than I would expect to see and add asking for a Fender Precision player. I played fretless in a 'regular band' for a number of years, the ad I replied to never mentioned fretless of course but it was the only bass I had at the time! Later I got a fretted bass also and used both depending on what was most appropriate for the track.

If you ever get neckdive / balance issues with a thunderbird style bass, instant fix is to have the lower part of the strap come over the front instead of the back. This stops the bass feeling like its tipping away from you and you can remove your hands and have zero neckdive!
10. There are a ton of candidates out there - check out some guitar pedals like the Mojomojo and Cinders by TC Electronic, OD Glove and Operation Overlord by EHX, American Sound and Orange Juice by Joyo... Basically if you're going into a store, try everything!
11. If you want a less bulky option, check out the Fairfield Barbershop too. Sounds great for low gain furry fatness, but not so great for what I'd label overdrive.
12. The BB doesn't sound like any of those if you ask me. Not necessarily better or worse mind, just different! If you're looking at DHA stuff, I would just get the cheapest DHA VT1 Purist unit. I had a VT2 and tended to just use the single tube and none of the clipping or colour options. Sounds superior to the EBS I reckon, I didn't like that pedal at all. http://www.davehallamps.co.uk/page26.html Basically you're only going to satisfy your curiosity by trying these out. Not everybody would pick the same favourite!
13. Do you know what the crossover frequency actually is though?
14.
Neotech Mega straps are really good.
^ Yup.
15. Btw, if you get a Cioks DC5 (Hotrox stock them), that's the only power supply I know that will fit under a Nano without any mods.
16. I know you weren't asking me, but I have the mids maxed, bass at 11 o'clock and treble at 2 o'clock. Flat setting is supposed to be bass and treble off and mids maxed btw - but that still sounds a little dark if you ask me!
17. Interested to hear what you think of it. I love how it never bottoms out no matter how hard you dig in, it just gives you more growl. However it is too dark sounding for some, you might want a bit more clarity if trying to bring out the mwah on a fretless.
Xotic BB Preamp - like a bass friendly tubescreamer, very touch sensitive and can go from clean to heavy drive by plucking strength alone. Come to think of it, this is what I used when playing fretless in a rock band due to expressiveness and is worth a look.
Still keep an eye out for a BB Preamp though! Just had another go on mine just for the hell of it, love how touch sensitive it is and its buzzy quality really helps to accentuate that mwah.
18. Also, if just turning the pad down on the tweeter, I assume you would still have a crossover in place that you might want to eliminate? Say for example (this is purely hypothetical) there is a crossover sending everything above 2kHz to the tweeter and everything below to the woofer. However the woofer might actually be capable of going up to 3kHz quite comfortably. If this was the case then removing the entire crossover network and hooking up the main speaker direct would give you a tad more brightness.
19.
When are the new yamahas being released,? Anyone know
They are in stock on Japanese sites now, so not long. Give the Yamaha shop in London a ring perhaps?
20. The soon-to-be-released updated Yamaha BB lineup features an active model in their mid-range price tier, I'd expect it to be under £800: http://youtu.be/eDslUlL_j7Y
21. Never heard of it being based on anything Ampeg like, but it doesn't sound like one to me anyway. There is more than one Ampeg sound, but usually it's associated with a fat/round/scooped sound. To my ears, the left hand side of the Vulcan's colour knob (or switch if you have the deluxe version) is like the Vintage but more ragged and with a big peak in the upper mids. The right side is scooped like a B3K but perhaps tamer/flatter. It's great to be able to blend between the two.
22.
OK, so not a pedal, but check out the drive channel on the Genzler Magellan 800 amp. Like you, I've been searching for ages for the perfect low gain drive that sounds smooth without low end mush or a nasty fizzy top end. I'd tried some of the pedals on your shortlist but ended up with the Magellan instead I ought to point out that I play fretted basses and round wound strings. Someone mentioned the Tone Hammer earlier and that was the best of the pedals, in my opinion. The Boss BB-1X bass driver sounds titanically crap on every YouTube clip that I saw but was surprisingly good in the flesh for low gain sounds. However, the Genzler is totally very similar to the Tone Hammer but with an additional level of clarity, not brighter but somehow clearer and more refined. When you engage it, there is a subtle eq curve added in too that rolls off some of the high and low end and bumps the mids a touch. My guess is that this would work really well with a fretless. I'm hoping to post a more in depth review of the amp soon.
That Genzler sounds nice, and it raises a good point that many of us are just looking for a preamp/drive pedal because we are not happy with the basic sound of our amps!
23. That's the one! There's also the C9, but I preferred the B9. This reminds me I have lent mine to a friend and need to get it back!
24.
After all it isn't as if a Fender has a Best Before date, and if it did it would be 1965
25. How much did you pay? The last of the American Standards are being blown out for bargain prices due to the new American Professional line, so hope you didn't pay full price. I don't see a problem with it though... the specs are the same as the last 2016 version. Is a shop supposed to get rid of all their old stock annually in case it goes it out date?
