Hmm, sell my B3K now, or wait until they are £500 new?

The Blueberry is kinda dark and muffled compared to a lot of other pedals. But it's the closest thing I've found to copping the sound of playing through a big cranked tube amp, I just love the way it compresses and growls when you dig in. It's hard to find that in a pedal. For brighter more aggressive sounds I turn to a Two Notes Le Bass or Pike Vulcan.
Yeah I want to replace the Soul food with a bearfoot blueberry or perhaps a hookers green bass machine. How does the green and blueberry compare? As ive heard they are similar😀
They are similar but I would take the Blueberry all day every day. Better low end retention and more depth/character to the drive and the way it responds to your playing.

Haven't gone hunting for clips, but the ones on their site are terrible, just some live recordings with a noisy crowd. I'd want to hear comparisons with a bass going in to a regular clean DI vs this to convince me. I'd like to see what these look like on the inside too!
I found the Mad Professor Blueberry to be too thin sounding for my liking, it was quite a let down when I got it. I much preferred the darker sound of the Bearfoot (with the Nature knob around 9-10 o'clock), but I needed to put it in a blendable loop to help retain some note definition.
I run mine about 2 o'clock and it's perfect for me. Still not a great deal of high mids, but then again I have other pedals to put in play if I want a brighter sound!

Radiused vs flatter fingerboards? Pros and cons...
dannybuoy replied to Greg.Bassman's topic in Bass Guitars
I prefer a flat board for chords too! When I straighten my index finger it actually bends backwards a tiny bit, so a radius would work against me when it comes to barre chords. -
Haha, small world! I was eyeing up the Noble, probably worth more than my entire board!
I've been using mine for about 18 months and although I try not to rely on specific pieces of gear I really miss it on the rare occasions that I'm on a gig without it. What does it do? In short, it allows me to take a lightweight class D amp (Aguilar TH500) to a gig and make it sound like I'm playing through a big old tube head. The 9v power outlets are also a big plus if you like to run pedals on the gig - the only drawback is that they're not isolated so you can't use a standard voltage doubler cable for 18v pedals. At almost every gig I get band members or sound engineers coming over and asking 'what's the black box?'. Singers using IEMs have commented that the bass still sounds 'fat'. I have a regular gig in a hotel on upright, one week I left the house in a rush and forgot the Noble... At sound check the sound engineer pulled me over and said 'look how much I've had to do to your channel - usually I can just leave it flat'. I've used in on a few recordings and it comes across really well - the EQ is great and it's one of the only pieces of gear that I actually use the treble control on. Is it much more expensive than other DIs? Yes. Is it worth it? For me, definitely. Compared to Sansamps, Radial DIs and the Aguilar Tonehammer DI this is vastly superior.
Funnily enough, the bassist from the band at my mate's wedding in October had an upright, Noble pre and Aguilar amp. If that was you, thanks for letting me borrow your amp for the few songs we played!!!

I would go for the Bearfoot version. It has legions of fans including myself, whereas the general consensus of the Mad Professor version is 'meh'.
Setlist for final show is on the NME site - http://www.nme.com/n...m-watch-1967589
Surprised to see not one song from 13!

They are both pretty bright but you'd probably want the steel ones. I've no idea what the difference is between the standard steels and the Marcus version though! They are very low tension however, I put a set on the same as my usual gauge and found I needed to change the setup quite a bit.

This can happen if there is slight twist along the length of the string, usually as a result of wrapping the string around the post to speed things up whilst the ball end was not free to rotate. Loosen it off and rotate the ball end to make sure there's no torsion on it.
-
As for strings, try Dunlop Super Brights!

It's adjustable via a trimpot. If you set the delay too short though it might switch off when in actual fact you just wanted it to hover in the heel down position for a bit. A far better design is the G-Lab Wowee - it uses a pressure sensitive switch to activate a relay, as a result there is zero delay when you step on/off.
To me, some of the heavier DG sounds go too far and just sound SUPER scooped and almost not like a bass...!
That's what they are supposed to sound like!

This actually looks like a good cheap pedal for metal if you don't want to splash the cash: Joyo Orange Juice: http://youtu.be/Uq9CDL4Jdyo

I'm a big fan of flatter boards too, after working out that of all the basses I have had, my favourite necks have all had a radius of 12" or more (e.g. Sandberg and Yamaha). My favourite ever neck is my Warwick Rockbass Streamer 5-string with a 26" radius. The 7.25" radius of the Sire basses is the only thing putting me off trying one, way too curvy for my liking.

I tried the Nux one, the analog yellow one, got it for £20 delivered. Word is it's the exact same pedal Hartke are selling as their 'bass chorus'. Can't fault it for the price!
-
Oh yes, and if the stock fan noise level is ok with you and it was just that new noise that was worrisome, I had the exact same thing after mine was repaired, it turned out to just be the blades hitting the wire, reassembling it 'fixed' it!
-
I replaced the fan in mine as he original was very noisy indeed. I can't give you a recommendation as the one I ended up with, whilst silent, doesn't push nearly as much air, so might not be the best choice. Ideally you'd want something in between. I will say you may have to track down a 2-to-3 pin adapter cable though!

£129 here btw in case you were looking at a more expensive one elsewhere: http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/Rodenberg_GAS-808B_NG_Overdrive.html

BTW I'm sure if you ask around here nicely there will be someone local willing to let you have a play through theirs to see if it's for you!
Just to play devils advocate. I've owned the Vintage, the b7k and the b3k twice. Couldn't get along with any of them to be honest, but I was sure I must be missing something since they seemed so highly praised which is why I kept going back. It's been commented by fan bois that folks who don't "get it" mustn't be using them correctly... Alas they just weren't for me. I like the way Doug at darkglass thinks, his support seems excellent and I wish him every success, but they are not all things to all people. I've continually returned to the Ashdown Lomenzo Hyperdrive pedal for my distortion needs, but again it might not work for you. This and my modified DIY BJFE Blueberry clone make a glorious noise when combined.
I guess it depends on your bass and what music you are playing. I have a B3K and mostly I don't like the way it sounds with most of my basses. But plug my Warwick 5er with twin humbuckers and steel strings, play some filthy riffs with a pick and it all makes sense! Works well with Jazz basses too, anything with a natural mid-scoop I guess.
-
Nothing can touch the B3K / B7K for metal sounds. If it's going to be an always on pedal, you could stick with the B3K and use your amp EQ. I would hold off buying until the Darkglass Alpha Omega comes out though! PS - If the EBS Billy Sheehan does tempt you, make sure it is the Deluxe version, that phase switch is essential. I bought and returned the original due to it having no low end without resorting to using the fx loops creatively to flip the phase. Another good one to look at outside of Darkglassville is the Two Notes Le Bass.
