Never tried a Sterling in the flesh, just heard a few Sterling vs Stingray videos on YouTube, where each and every time the Stingray sounds miles better. I prefer a smaller body and neck so the Sterling appeals on paper, but it's sound just doesn't do it for me. SLO Specials are rare but you can always put in a custom order for a new one.

What if you could have a copy of Audacity that already included everything you needed, would it fit the bill otherwise? There will be free simple tools out there to convert files, but if you're wanting to amplify, apply fades etc, then you are in audio editor territory and Audacity is probably your best bet when it comes to free tools unless you don't mind paying for something a bit fancier.

All pickups in series would give you a louder, darker sound than parallel; I assume it would also be louder and darker than the solo P but not sure... Sounds like you haven't heard a series PJ in action even though you want a setup with it wired permanently in this configuration. Perhaps switchable series/parallel wouldn't be such a bad idea after all! If you happen to have a store nearby that has an American Standard Jaguar Bass you can try out (e.g. Wunjos), that has series/parallel switching so you can at least see if it's for you.

Work in progress... Just got the Cioks DC5 mounted under a Pedaltrain Metro 24. I have a Pedaltrain PB1 wedge shaped pedal riser incoming to go under the expression pedal to reduce foot strain in the heel down position, then have to connect everything up! Bass will go straight into the Octabvre followed by the Manta - I want the expression pedal at the end with the Manta next to it, so this should work quite nicely. The Thumpinator and Diamond both alter the tone of the Octabvre if placed before it, so they are placed later in the chain.

I don't see the point in these massive octavers... There's not enough tonal variation in my T16 for me to want two presets out of it, I'd much rather have 2 smaller and very different sounding octaves on board. The FX loop could be handy but it tracks surprisingly well after other pedals - funnily enough the Diabolik sends the tracking all over the place but it is rock solid placed after a Prunes & Custard! I have a special one-off gig coming up where I think everyone will be running direct to the PA and am just trying to work out what's going on the board... So far it's looking like: Polytune Mini -> Octabvre Mini -> Source Audio Manta with hub and Dunlop DVP4 expression pedal -> Corona Mini chorus -> Tone Hammer DI 90% of the time it will be just a P with flats into the Tone Hammer with a bit of overdrive courtesy of the AGS circuit. Then a dash of chorus used in the chorus of one song... and then octave synth / filter used for one track. Currently trying to decide if the Diamond Compressor I just picked up is going on, but I think I prefer the way the Tone Hammer AGS circuit responds to my P plugged in direct; I could try the comp at the end but then I would need another DI!

The COG has awesome tracking and a very smooth sub octave that sounds wicked blended, but it can't quite cop that hollow sounding solo octave sound like the Octabvre can.

Both diagrams achieve the same thing, I just lost patience getting the arrows to look right! The LS-2 takes loops A + B (Meatbox + Synth), blends and sends them to the DI. The dry feed from the Meatbox is used to go to the rest of the pedals and rig.

Try a Classic 50s as well if you like a chunky neck!

Old round wounds? Sounds like new strings aren't for you, I thought Sunbeams were pretty mellow.

This way should work as well and do without the need for an additional signal splitter... (the LS-2 hookup looks confusing because I don't know how to use Visio properly, but its just the meatbox in one loop and the synth pedals in the other):

I thought as much, most pedals do naff all without something in the main input. But you can just use the Meatbox signal as the main input, and blend that with the Synth in one of the loop inputs, which will save you a few grams on your pedalboard!

I think I've gathered what you want and you might be able to do it with what you already have. First you'll need a cable with one stereo TRS jack to two mono TS jacks. They are commonly known as insert cables, low profile ones for pedalboard use are hard to come by but can be custom made. This will save you using the LS-2 to split the signal before the Meatbox, as we'll need to use this pedal as a mixer later! Secondly you need another signal splitter before the synth rig. You can use a blender or LS-2 for this, but also a stereo chorus pedal or even a Boss tuner, so try to use something you already own if possible. Then the LS-2 can be used to blend the Meatbox and Synth and send to the DI. You might be able to just plug them into the return sockets with noting in the main input socket or sends, I'm not sure... otherwise you can route the Meatbox through the main LS-2 main input and the synth rig through one of the returns. Whatever way works to get it to behave like a mixer!

If Bass Direct manage to sell it for that price, then good luck to them and the only person you should be pissed off with is yourself for letting it go for less than its market value. If I buy something I consider underpriced I would have no worries putting it up for sale again at a higher price. If I manage to make a profit on it, it will help to balance out the trades where I ended up out of pocket.

Bearfoot Blueberry, Aguilar Tonehammer, or Xotic Bass BB Preamp would be my recommendation then. Also heard good things about the Creation Audio Grizzly but I can't vouch for it personally. SolidgoldFX Beta, Catalinbread SFT and Way Huge Pork Loin are all good for this also (but I preferred the ones previously mentioned to these).
