Will the Bass Soul Food do a 'No One Knows' tone?
dannybuoy replied to 1976fenderhead's topic in Effects
That compression is even more so on the Zoom Ampeg model, hence it only sounding passable when using a pick! The DI version of the VT has a clean blend which would give you some punch back, but then you're talking more £. It's a tricky tone to emulate with pedals, I've not tried them but perhaps the Line6 POD stuff might get reasonably close for not much £? -

It's hard for any pedal to match that tone, but I actually got pretty close with a Zoom Multi FX set up with a BB Preamp boosting into the Ampeg sim. Sounded mushy and unusable with fingers but worked well with a pick! A used VT Bass is a good option for around £80. -
Filter into OC-2 is interesting - no tracking issues?

The advantage of ordering direct is getting it customised. Want 4 knobs and a passive tone control? Done!

I leave my EQ dead flat. Great touch sensitive early Sabbath tones with a Precision!

This just reminded me of another thread, it's more likely hydro-dipping than the old Fotoflame technique, e.g: http://hydrodip-designs.co.uk/gallery/ http://www.liquid-grafix.co.uk/custom-instruments.html

I'd be interested to see what other finishes could be applied... I guess they are photo laminates like the old MIJ Fender Fotoflame basses, so it could be pretty much anything that could be printed.

^ Those Squier Deluxe Jazz Vs are super wide though! I have small hands too and find traditional Fender / Squier 5-strings uncomfortable to play. I have a Squier VM Jazz V that is going up for sale soon, as even though the neck is very shallow, the width is a problem and I just prefer something with a tighter string spacing. The most comfortable 5 string neck I've ever tried is my Warwick Rockbass Streamer (the pickups on it are weak though so I wouldn't recommend this exact one). It is pretty deep front-to-back but has narrow spacing and it fits my hand perfectly. If I ever had a custom bass made I would send them this and make them copy the neck profile! Perhaps lookout for a used Warwick FNA Jazzman (or $$) - with a humbucker in the sweet spot and a single coil at the neck they can cop both Musicman and Jazz tones which sounds perfect for funk/dance/slap stuff.

Looks a bit different doesn't it! He says he can apply a range of patterns and finishes as they are built to order too. http://www.retrovibe.co.uk/custom/django.html
The DarkGlass Microtubes Vintage is also nice, but I found it a bit too dark and I sold mine quickly, we didn't get along.
If you want a brighter VMT, check out the Vulcan!
Any suggestions? (Not Chrome / Firefox etc. as said earlier, this is a work machine, and I don't have permission to just add stuff.)
Depending on how your work have configured stuff... if you just don't have admin rights to install apps and they haven't blocked launching anything that isn't white-listed, then sign up for an account at Turbo.net. It will let you run any version of any browser on your machine without installing it - everything is copied to your user profile so you don't need admin rights to run anything.

Well I am typing this from Edge as a test and it all seems just fine! I do know what you mean though from experiencing the same issue with IE11 in the past. Try hitting the button on the top left of the composer that looks like a lightswitch to turn off all the rich text editing stuff, that should help.

Or you could just get one from the US for around £200...

Personally I would steer clear of Zoom multis. They're great for learning about effects, or having a lot of different effects in one box with presets, but if you're at all fussy (like I am) about your overdrive sounds I think you'd be very dissatisfied (like I was). I've nothing against digital effects though - in fact if I were you I would wait for the Source Audio Aftershock to be released in April, it has a ton of models from tubey overdrive to fuzz, including a model of the Darkglass B3K, and ridiculously in-depth parameter tweaking app to fine tune it: https://www.talkbass.com/threads/npd-sa-aftershock.1211545 I've owned it's its predecessor the OFD and a couple of the models were very good at copping the old school P Bass + tube amp tones.

My fave for a warm subtle overdrive to pair with a P and flats is the Bearfoot Blueberry. It's a dark sounding pedal though and not the best for aggressive pick playing (for which I turn to either an Aguilar Agro, Two Notes Le Bass or Pike Vulcan). Definitely check out the VT Bass, that can cover a wide range and sounds great. If there's one thing I've learnt from all my years of pedal fiddling though, it's that everyone's ears, opinions, gear and playing styles are different, and you can't even rely on a YouTube demo most of the time. The true path to enlightenment requires buying and selling to try as many as you can to see what works for you!

So, quest update... The big box Q-Tron arrived to sit next to the Mini. It's more versatile but not as funky. The TruTron left the building to be replaced by a Meatball, which now takes the top slot. Better than its descendants the Groove Regulator and GR2 IMHO. I have a rekindled love for the MXR M82, it just works so well in a mix due to the blend but is still wild enough to be audible. Also you can use it as a boost pedal. Tried the Manta... and returned it. And finally... I have a Mr Black Fwonkbeta incoming which is the most goddam funky sounding pedal I have ever layed ears upon! http://youtu.be/wnrl3gkAbGs I have a feeling I might just end up with this and the MXR and call it a day.

Yamaha BB1025X - the only reason I'd sell it would be if a nice black 2025X popped up used!

Will DB players stop complaining about transport, now?

Sounds like my lawnmower! -
I think you'd be better off keeping out in one piece. Fender style bodies and necks always sell well as people enjoy putting them together and know that most stuff will fit together. If your Peavey isn't interchangeable with Fender stuff, then not many people would want to buy a Peavey neck or body unless they had the other matching half lying about already, or would be making their own
-
If you want Jazz width but chunkier front-to-back, my Sandberg Basic falls into that category, not sure if the necks are the same across their range though.
Filter before overdrive!? Well that's just not right at all...
That's precisely where it should go unless you want to sound like a cheap synthesiser!
