1.
Really after something in the P bass line or possibly a P/J rather than an MM style bass. WHat about ESP basses e.g. a B55?
ESP basses are rarely mentioned or recommended around these parts. They are probably perfectly good basses on a par with the others suggested, but perhaps they're just unfashionable due to their image as mainly producing pointy guitars for metal players, so resale value won't be as good as the other options.
2.
For funk, the first type of effect I'd try is an envelope filter.
This man speaketh the truth.
3. Squire Vintage Modified Precision V, without a doubt! Very well reviewed all around. http://www.andertons.co.uk/electric-basses/pid30085/cid682/squier-vintage-modified-precision-bass-v-in-candy-apple-red.asp Also the Yamaha BB415 or 425 can be picked up very cheaply too, the added bridge pickup gives you more options. I really rate these, but it's the only one out of these 3 that I've owned: http://www.gear4music.com/Guitar-and-Bass/Yamaha-BB425-5-String-Bass-Guitar-Black/D9R Or if you want ultra budget around the £100 mark, Harley Benton from Thomann. Still great basses for the money by all accounts. http://www.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_hot_rod_5_bass.htm
4. From memory I think you can configure it to either mute or pass through unaffected when in tuner mode. It will need to pass through or it will mute your amp!
5. Check out the Keeley Bassist: http://www.ovnilab.com/reviews/keeleygc2.shtml
6. Just been playing with the Ampeg sims in the new GarageBand update, I think I prefer them to the ones I've paid good money for in other apps! The only thing that bugged me was the lack of latency control in GarageBand until I realised I could use AudioBus to drive it and lock it to 128 samples, which is pretty much instantaneous!
7. Get a credit card with a money transfer offer and get up to £2k cash for 2 years interest free instead! Saw that annoying money saving expert chap on the telly the other day banging on about them.
8. I've also tried Alex's Ginger (although before he messed with the trimpots to lower the gain) and for me, the Blueberry is my always-on. It is very dark compared to most drives though, so if you want something with a bit more brightness on tap it might not be for you, but it has the best breakup character I've ever found in a pedal. I even use mine at low gain as my amp sim for headphone practice, it's the best thing I've found for that (and I've been through a few amp modellers and preamps with speaker sims).
9. ?! And £229 for the guitar version.
10. If you're worried about relying on the amp EQ, a simple EQ pedal would do the trick (just knock down all the sliders 100Hz and below), and there's a few cheap examples going in the classifieds if you don't have one already!
11.
+1 to W.O.T.s rapid wit. Makes the rest of us look like Klotz.
It was pretty Van Damme funny.
12. You shouldn't do any damage to the guitar amp. The internals aren't an issue, the only potential problem is feeding the speaker too much low frequency content, but most guitar amps filter the deep lows anyway, plus you're rolling off the bass EQ. Just listen to the guitar rig in isolation and you should be able to test how bassy it sounds! If you want a more portable version of this setup you can try a Tech21 California (or the dirt cheap Joyo clone) which is a Mesa simulator, and blend your clean bass with that via the LS-2 and send the mixture to your bass rig.
13. Out of interest, why is the lack of battery power a deal breaker, especially if the pedal comes with a power supply? If you really need to be free of power cables, there are rechargeable power supplies like the Pedaltrain Volto (although that seems overkill for just one pedal). If you're just bass and drums, you may find you want more and more effects such as octavers until you end up needing a board to put them on! Look up the various threads discussing Royal Blood for some ideas on pitch shifting and creating fake guitar sounds too.
14. More as in what? The PJB Bighead has more than a rudimentary EQ as it has an aux in, USB audio interface and is rechargeable. Or are you talking more about tone shaping and overdrive? The Two Notes Le Bass sounds excellent with 2 switchable channels plus the ability to run them in parallel or series, plus a cab sim... But no aux in or batteries, so depends what you're after!
15. That 3-band alnico sounded awful next to the other two. Maybe to do with how the EQ was set (how was it set)? Still, I would've thought the preamp on the regular non-classics should be the same. Aren't the 3-bands cut/boost with centre detents, and the 2-bands boost only on the bass and boost/cut on the highs with no detent?
16. I advise you to snap up the Source Audio OFD currently going in the classifieds. It does overdrive, distortion and fuzz in one unit, has a clean blend and EQ and can sound massive. There's a lot of good and bad sounds in it, but it can do a really good tubey overdrive and Big Muff sound.
17. Long time no bump! Now £35 posted
18. Bump, looks like this might head to eBay if no iOS bassists want a piece of this!
19. How about this? http://www.ehx.com/products/super-space-drum
20. Only used a couple of times since new, still minty fresh in box with power supply. £170 new, will deliver to a UK address of your choosing for £125! NOW SOLD
21. If you go DHA get the most recent model as the older ones supposedly have noisy headphone amps!
22. Was going to suggest the PJB Bighead but it doesn't have a thru output, it's designed to be used more for headphone practice. But if that's all you want it for I can thoroughly recommend!
