Apart from playing through a knackered amp, the other way to get there is to use an overdrive pedal. The best thing I have come across for early Geezer tone is the Xotic Bass BB Preamp, which is very touch sensitive and expressive to play through. I hear the Digitech Hardwire CM-2 is in the same ballpark though and can be had for £44 delivered! http://www.dv247.com/guitars/digitech-hardwire-cm-2-tube-overdrive-pedal--49103
So can we close this thread now?
We've only just begun! I'm interested to hear more demos now that a few people have got their hands on them.
It's interesting you say that, as I imagine smaller builders like 3 leaf very much rely on internet fame to sell their devices, in particular forums. I doubt anyone would have even heard of builders like iron ether and fuzzrocious without that kind of exposure. For boss, digitech, Ibanez etc completely agree with you, but not for boutique builders.
I think the forums certainly help get them off the ground when they are very small, but Darkglass and 3Leaf are now larger than that. I would hazard a guess at present more of their pedals are sold due to word of mouth, artist endorsements, social media and store presence, and most of the buyers not active on the forums. Of course I don't have any data to bass that on, but most of the bassists I've met (not including ones met through BC of course!) have either never heard of Talkbass / Basschat, or have done but are not active on them enough to know or care about the back story or have any kind of brand loyalty. I have been on both forums for years, have 3 Darkglass pedals, and have even received freebies from Doug, so have a degree of brand loyalty. But if I thought the Vulcan XL sounded better than my B7K, I would make the switch without hesitation, because they are tools and I want the best tool for the job. So if only a fraction of buyers are active on the forums, and only a fraction of them place politics / brand loyalty above price / performance, I don't think the way Spencer is conducting business will have a huge negative impact on sales. All very much IMHO of course!

I couldn't give a monkey's about the politics and would choose whatever pedal sounded best, I think most bassists not deeply involved in Basschat / Talkbass wouldn't even know or care either.

I did measure them a while back and the EMGs / Delanos were very slightly smaller but would fit. I'll do that again and post the measurements. There are too many EMG soapbars models to choose from though! The other, potentially cheaper and better looking option is to get them rewound. I wouldn't normally go to these lengths to fix a cheap bass but apart from the pickups it's great!

Warmoth do a 'Dinky J' body too, I expect standard necks will fit.

Or... Some of the pedals suggested cost the same as another MB200! You could get another amp and either: - Get a custom switching device or put a passive A/B switch on both the input and output - Connect the line out / XLR of amp B to the aux in (or fx loop in if it has one?) amp A, effectively using it as a preamp. That way you also have a a backup amp and the option to run two together if you find yourself needing more volume!
Good points - gets the Stingray sound and looks like one too, great price Bad points - Narrower nut, oversized bridge plate, limited colour options.
The narrower nut is a plus for some, myself included! I had one, sounded, felt and played great. Good fretwork and sounded very lively. Only downside is the preamp is too hot, but that can be modded (there is a megathread on these basses on Talkbass where the main man at SBMM posted the instructions). It's only really an issue if you want to use it with certain overdrive / distortion / fuzz pedals though, most amps can pad the signal down to prevent any unwanted distortion.
Many of the Sansamp pedals feature a low pass filter - sometimes called that, sometimes 'Rumble filter' and on the VT Bass DI, it's part of the 'Bite' function. Also the Radial Bassbone pedals have this feature. I think as an adjustable high pass filter. Worth checking out as you'd also get their DI, distortion and other features.
Totally different filters - the OP is after a sweepable low pass filter to make wah-wah and womp-womp noises rather than a high pass filter designed to cut out subsonic rumble. However, something like a Thumpinator might be worth putting after the filter (as well as a limiter maybe) if you are doing some crazy resonant sweeps down low!
Will try FF at home but will not be allowed to do so at work.
You can try using this to launch another browser at work without actually installing it: https://turbo.net/browsers This is often used by web developers to test their sites in older versions of various browsers, but it also comes in handy for working around restrictions!
I've never needed a five string... until I saw the pink NG2. Wow!
[Img]http://www.bassgeardirect.com.au/wp-content/uploads/ng2-matte-pink-lmited-edition-bod.jpg" class="ipsImage" />

Source Audio Manta? You can map the expression pedal to any knob (I think, hopefully a user or the manual can confirm). Not sure if you want to have two separate expression pedals, or one pedal operating both knobs simultaneously, but I wouldn't be surprised if both of these were possible with the Manta plus the MIDI hub. Plus you get an awesome envelope filter and distortion unit thrown in for the price of entry.

D'Addarios or Dunlop Super Brights get my vote.

Check out Marusczyk (Elwood is their Jazz style model), they are getting very popular with people on here at the moment - you can get a custom build in a quick turnaround time a lot cheaper than the alternatives: http://www.public-pe...yk-instruments/
And soundwise at the Herts Bass Bash Precision Blind-Test two years ago won hands down against some very tasty competition (70s, 60s and 50s Fender Precisions amongst them).
Were there any clips recorded of this? I would expect a Quarter Pounder pickup mounted further towards the neck than a typical P would sound pretty different to the others.

I've heard of a couple of amps that are switchable internally by moving a jumper, who knows, the Carvin might be the same. Perhaps they were done this way to reduce the chances of numpties melting their amps by flicking it to the wrong setting (as my mate did to his PC once!).
