Since the thread was started by Truckstop, and if you can widen Metal to include stoner/desert rock: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vL1Z8sameCk

I haven't heard many good demos of the TAFM so thought I would do a quick clip. This is one of the most dynamic fuzzes I've ever played, no settings are touched throughout, the variation in sound is just down to playing style. Pre-gain, fuzz and tone are all close to noon, mid boost switch on, and just a little bit of clean mixed in. This is the older TAFM without the switchable internal buffer, so the clean channel has all the top end rolled off which helps the two signals sit together better I find. This is a Yamaha BB1025X with fairly old nickel rounds, into the pedal then an Orange Terror Bass and 2x Ampeg SVT210AV cabs, recorded with a Zoom H2 on a desk, off axis two feet away (I need a decent mic and stand!). The volume was set very low as I had a sleeping baby downstairs, it sounds better when turned up a bit! I might try an redo it next time I'm home alone! https://app.box.com/s/bli2zfbzd2owpoe3divhilx44rr7g3dv

Overdrive is what you seek. But not the Boss Bass Overdrive, which although I love, is definitely more into distortion territory!

Pickguard/Scratchplate reccomendation...

Nice bass, what is it? -
Either call them first to check, or just return it if it's not the one you want?
Hell yeah, fuzz me up baby! What I've come to realise is I don't like the muff sound. It sounds artificial to my ears, too clipped and buzzy, although I like the warmth and fatness. I don't like the Zvex mammoth for the same reason, or the MXR El Grande bass fuzz. I've just bought a Fender Sublime from the for sale section and I love it. It's exactly what I want from fuzz- fat, vintage, warm, creamy, and the fuzz sounds more like tube breakup than a wasp in a jam jar. Plus it sounds like my bass, just a fuzzier version. Too often fuzz sounds completely synthesised. I also have a danelectro V1 cool cat fuzz which is a Frantone Peach Fuzz clone, love that too, not as much as the Sublime! Sublime is huge though. Ridiculously so!
You would love the TAFM then!

Yeah, I never realised how much fun they are to play! The MXR is staying put by the way, it's too good to let go and very different to the others.
The Chunk Brown Dog gated fuzz is my favourite (or the Brown Dog fuzz circuit in the Octavius Squeezer). Combine it with the 00Funk MkII for a fantastic synth too. I also have a modded Russian Big Muff that sounds fantastic on bass, especially with a bit of delay. Lastly, the Crowther Prunes & Custard is a lot of fun (synthy almost filter like on some settings and like no other fuzz or OD). I don't know how to categorise the P&C, Crowther describes it as a "Harmonic Generator Intermodulator" which I think is a two stage fuzz (preamp with gain/drive), but I'm never quite sure
Sounds like you would be a fan of the Tech21 Red Ripper and/or Source Audio Multiwave Bass Distortion if you like what the P&C does!
I had an impulse Black Friday purchase of a new TAFM. Just because I love my original so much I want to see how the newer ones sound, they have a switchable buffer inside and a few tweaks here and there!
Update, the new one didn't sound anywhere near as good as my old one, even with the new internal buffer disabled. I will be hanging onto this old one for dear life, best bass fuzz I've ever heard!

Thanks for the tip, this looks like the one: http://cpc.farnell.com/stontronics/t3004st/ac-ac-power-supply-12v-500ma-2/dp/PW02817?ost=PW02817

It's possible to set the EQ and character to give a reasonably flat uncoloured sound, I know this because I did a frequency analysis on my old v1 VT Bass. The same knob positions don't yield the same results on the v2 and DI models, but it should be achievable, plus you have the blend to make things easier.

Just spotted these in the v2.6 firmware update: Bass Model Pack includes models based on: Ampeg® SVT® Normal Ch. Ampeg® SVT® Bright Ch. Gallien-Kruger® 800RB SVT® 8x10 SVT® 410 HLF I don't have one of these but now I'd be inclined to try one out!

Well I paid £84 for it, not too bad I hope considering it's in very good condition and a reasonably rare MIJ Boss pedal - there were others looking a lot more beat up for £100 and over. It came in today. No problem with lows or volume boosts, and a really nice response that lets you play it like an instrument... but it's too clean for me. It just doesn't have that warm distorted greasy funk of the Mini Q-tron! All other filters including this Boss are going to be moved on and I am going to try and hunt down a big box Q-Tron+ and possibly splurge on a TruTron 3X if I make the mistake of going online after a few drinks this weekend!

Get an angle grinder. Grind something with it. That sound.
-
Glad you like it, you probably would only have been half satisfied with the other options discussed, sometimes you just have to go for it!
-
Shame they make this bass two versions, and the one with the cool black stain finish has the Bartolini pickups instead of the Nordstrand Big Singles. Every bass I've tried with these Barts sounds totally bland and I got the same impression from the Youtube demo of this bass.
-
Can't be that good as nobody ever talks about them, but FWIW I did like the envelope filter model built into my old Line6 Lowdown amp, it was very Q-Tron/Mutron-ish.
-
I always thought by volume spike, people meant it was overly resonant at certain frequencies that could hurt your speakers... I don't get that with my Q-Tron at all, although there is a volume boost when it is turned on that should be simple to mod. So not sure which issue you are referring to. I did fear the Enigma could damage speakers in this way since the sweep can start a lot lower, and if you have the resonance set high, when it sweeps down low it could take out some woofers... The Sonuus Wahho (another brilliant sounding filter I forgot to include, sold on because I did not like the interface) has a nifty feature where you can set a separate Q value for lower and upper frequencies to counteract this.

Agreed, thanks for posting, just snagged one on eBay!

A B3 would be a good choice, it does require to press two pedals at once like the B1on from memory to bypass it - but I think you can also plug in an external footswitch to control bypass, and also since each stomp has its own switch, you can just turn each effect off individually. I wouldn't recommend a multi FX like COG can build - it's a lot of cash and it's not very flexible in future if you want to switch out a pedal or insert another effect somewhere in the middle. Separates is still the best solution for most people including me! Sounds like you have a decent chorus and overdrive, I'd just buy an octave and be done with it. Octave effects on the Zoom suck by the way, I found them to have too much latency with the effected sound coming in a short delay after your clean tone.
