1. I have both, you can get pretty similar tones out of each. The SFT sounds a bit more muffled, I have to have the treble control at 3 o'clock to get some pleasing grind out of it. The BB has a more useable EQ since the EQ is after the overdrive section of the circuit. You can get a lot more bass out of the BB, crank the bass on the SFT and you end up distorting your lows more without actually increasing the bass by much. As to which sounds better, I'm undecided so I'm keeping both! For overdrive I run one or the other into a VT Bass, the combination of stacking the pedals gives a much more pleasing drive sound than can be achieved by any of the pedals alone.
2.
I’ve got a musicman sterling running through an ashdown ABM500 anniversary head with a bass pod XT. I couldn’t get the sound I wanted so I bought a VT bass but then, I was colouring my sound to sound like an Ampeg SVT. You’ve got the real thing. Why would you want to buy an emulator? It’s a fantastic pedal for me but is it what you need with your rig?
I don't consider a solid state Ampeg 'the real thing'. The VT Bass can help you get some of the tube sounds of the B15 and SVT valve amps - I say go for it!
3. My P Bass had a useless S1 switch that lets you select series/parallel switching for the coils. On a Jazz this is a good feature, but on a P it doesn't sound too good. So I rewired the switch to let me bypass the volume/tone pots at the press of a button, connecting the pickup directly to the output jack. Loads more treble and clarity on tap and fully switchable, and it only cost me an inch of solder and a few watts of electricity! If you decide to go the preamp route, you could always try a pedal preamp (e.g. Sadowsky, Aguilar Tone Hammer, Electronix Submarine) instead of modding your bass.
4. Ginger Reyes from the new Smashing Pumpkins lineup.
5. Reminds me of this one (any excuse to post this photo)!
6. Might be interested in this - fancy a swap for a Squier Vintage Modified Tele Custom II with Duncan Designed P90s?
7.
yeah using a different bass. If I roll off the neck and onto the bridge pickup I get too much fret clank due to running less string tension. Never thought about lowering the pickup...might give that a try
Reducing the volume of the neck pickup and lowering the neck pickup into the body would have roughly the same effect. If you're getting more clank because the bridge pickup has more treble, then try turning down the tone control. If your string tension is too low then get a higher string guage. The DR Lo-Riders are quite tight string, you can try them in the 45-105 guage, or get something even beefier. If you don't use the G too often you could even string BEAD!
8. Presumably you're swapping basses mid-set and not just retuning? If so you should expect to have to tweak your volume or eq if you don't want to fiddle with the amp you could try an eq pedal perhaps? Also if your jazz is too thumpy, how do you have the controls set? Can you just back off the neck pickup a tad or even lower the pickup slightly?
9. Dunno about the cheapo bridges on eBay but they are probably decent enough. However the Gotoh 201 is an awesome bridge for £30. Place a wanted ad in the forum and you might even find a used one!
10. What an awful monstrosity of a pedal!
11. The Novation Bass Station has analogue inputs and can be used in the same way.
12. Just bought these of the forum recently, but I'm not using them so off they go... Fender Sub-Lime Bass Fuzz Awesome bass fuzz with an adjustable crossover that keeps the low end clean and punchy while fuzzing up your mids and highs. Quite vintage and mellow sounding. Selling it because I prefer the more agressive sound of my Supercollider plus it's too big for my little Pedaltrain mini! Mint condition with box and plush Fender carry bag. £80 posted - NOW SOLD Ashdown James Lomenzo Hyperdrive Great distortion pedal that just distorts your midrange, with adjustable Q, frequency and blend. Not forgetting the funky VU meter! Good condition except for a tiny chip on the back side, comes with original box. £35 posted. SOLD Might be interested in trades for any of the following: Wilson Freaker wah Sovtek Green or Civil War Big Muff EHX Nano Small Stone
13. I think the deluxe is a totally different circuit rather than just a standard one with extra bells and whistles. It has 2 different octave sounds that you can blend together, a clean one similar to the EBS Octabass and a synthier growlier one similar to the Boss OC-2. It also has a mid boost switch to make it easier to hear the effect in a dense mix. I'm not 100% but I expect the tracking is probably also be better on the deluxe. If you want a cheap basic octaver then the standard one will do you, but personally I'd go for the deluxe (or the Aguilar Octamizer).
14. I reckon the Wilson is your best bet if you don't mind spending the extra cash... I'm thinking of ordering the vintage spec 12-position myself. Also, I've heard the that Morley Power Wah is much better than the Dual Bass Wah. Also the new G-Labs Wowee bass wah sounds great from the clips I've seen on youtube.
15. Beats me. Maybe those limits aren't actually enforced in practice!
16. I always thought the limit was £18 but it looks like they raised it to £105 in Dec 2008 and £135 January this year! http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7727717.stm http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8441546.stm That would be £135 per package, so you might get stung if they were shipped together and the sender put the full value down on the documentation. Some shops in the US put down the value as $25 to avoid customs charges (typically 17.5% VAT +£8 'handling' charge) but that means they are only insured for that much if it were to go missing. Looks like these people could get away with increasing that now though with these new limits in place!
17. Fender Sub-Lime fits the description. It's like a mellow Big Muff, with an adjustable crossover that keeps the low end pure and clean while fuzzing up the mids and highs only. It has the tightest deepest punchiest low end of any fuzz I've ever played with and it's quite vintage sounding in the top end so it even sounds good recorded direct. Here's Theo AKA DosiYanarchy's clips: http://soundclick.com/share?songid=8561252 Only drawback is that it is EFFING HUGE!
18. Also, sway your body or tap your feet in time with the beat instead of standing there like a breadstick. Your body will get locked into the rhythm and your fingers will follow!
19. Looks like they tried to do a fretless conversion by grinding the frets down and then gave up half way through!
20. There's quite a bit of room either side of the bridge with standard P ashtray on a 4-string, I doubt it'll fit over this one but you never know, so I'll try it out later! I might have to put this on eBay if there's no more interest around here...
21. There's the Pignose amps, but they're not that cheap or easily available: http://www.imuso.co.uk/Amplifiers/Amplifie...Amplifier-Combo
22. A Yamaha BB414 / BB415 would look good in that setting: You can get the BB415 5-string for £269 new which is a bit over budget but it's worth checking eBay! As mentioned previously, Trabens are also a good bet, there's a couple in the for sale section.
23. Never heard of these before - so the pickups sense the string vibration optically and convert that into sound?!
