I've bough quite a few things online from the US, here are my tips:
- Ask the seller if they would mind marking down the price to $25 to avoid customs charges. I know a couple of retailers that do this by default, so I never pay taxes on my pedals!
- If it gets stuck at customs, they will send you a letter with a customs reference number, but it takes an extra week or so to arrive. Most USPS mail gets sent via Parcelforce and you can use the USPS tracking number on the Parcelforce website. If it shows on there that the item is being held, you can phone up your local Parceforce depot and pay the charge and arrange a free redelivery. They don't like doing this without the reference number but they CAN do it with just the USPS/Parcelforce tracking number if they can be bothered to look it up on the computer. Also, one time I was told I could not pay over the phone or get a re-delivery, I had to go into the depot and pay there and pick it up. When I got there they said I was given the wrong information and that I could have paid with my card over the phone and had it re-delivered for free! So if they say that then it's most likely because they couldn't be bothered so phone again to see if you can speak to someone else.
