I keep the Juice usually maxed, never below 3 o'clock, Stroke around 11 o'clock depending on the instrument, Fwonk anywhere between 10 and 2 depending on how much pork I've eaten on that particular day. It just has a slightly dirty sound like it's running into a cranked vintage amp that's hard to replicate by combining amp sims or dirt with other filters. The only thing I've heard that sounds similar is a vintage Mutron III, although I'm yet to actually get my hands on one!

Don’t be afraid to turn that Fwonk control down to around 9 o’clock to tame those spikes. Unlike most filters it’s still pretty damn squelchy with the resonance set low!

The GR2 is very nice indeed, not as greasy/dirty as the Fwonk, but then again not much is!

I tried a Funk Lite, went straight back to the shop. Fwonkbeta is still going strong though!

Personally I reckon the Tech21 VTDI, BDDI, DP3X, or the soon to be released YYZ might get closer to that particular tone. I haven't tried the new Darkglass X pedals, but from the Vintage/B7K/Alpha Omega range, the AO or the newer Vintage models with the attack switch would get closest to that I reckon.

Not me, I think I bought my BB1025X for something like £675 from Thomann when most places over here were selling them for £850. I don't know the risks when it comes to CITES, but there is a dedicated thread on the subject somewhere around these parts.

I haven't tried that many onboard preamps, but I do like the Darkglass Tone Capsule, since it has two mid bands and no treble. Get a 'vintage' tone by boosting low mids and cutting high mids, and vice versa for a 'modern' tone.

If you're interested in the Warwick Streamer PJs, you should also look out for Spector basses.

Definitely worth considering the pedal route. With swapping the preamp you are generally just swapping one clean EQ circuit for another one with slightly different characteristics. But a pedal like the TC Spectradrive will bring multiband compression to the table, that by itself adds a lot of punch and sparkle, a 3 band EQ and overdrive. You might not have considered overdrive, but you do mention aggression, and very mild drive settings can bring out some nice harmonics without sounding obviously distorted.

What's the difference? Sounds like an AB switch is what you need!

Certain instruments and mixes suit scooped mids. If I'm playing with my P with flats to some blues, RnB or classic rock, I like a lot of fat low mids, not too much deep lows, and barely any highs. Especially important to steer clear of the upper midrange if there are high pitched vocals or horns to contend with. With my last band that featured some heavy downtuned guitars, experimenting with headphone mixes showed that a scooped pickup setting (both pickups up full) and scooped / distorted preamp (Darkglass B7K or Sansamp) made the bass leave a nice hole for the guitars to sit in rather than battle them for the same frequencies. Yet it wasn't lost in the mix as the low end was very present and the distorted top end cut through above the guitars.

Looks good to me. Can the FI be used like an envelope filter? If so I'd probably put the comp after that, to stop it affecting envelope control and also to reign in any peaky filter sweeps. You might also want to put the metaphors last if you want to use it as a DI, or perhaps even try it before the fuzz since a blended Big Muff sounds ace with a light distortion going into it.

I think one of the most interesting combos around that I'd like to try if I had to have one bass is two Jazz pickups with an MM in-between, as used by Atelier Z. I'd like to be able to flick a switch to go from both J pups to the single MM.

Yup, same with the SolidgoldFX Beta. Too much bass boost and too dark at low volume I thought, but it has lots of heft at gig volume!

I voted PJ due to my favourite bass for rock being my BB1025X, however standard Fender PJs sound nothing like it. If I was playing old school funk though it would be a single MM like my Sandberg Basic. I'd love to have a custom one, but it's €1690 for this one and my standard one cost me £350, so I'll stick with that for now!

All I can say is listen to lots of demos on YouTube. Never found a demo of any bass with P/MM pickups blended, or a bass with those Sims pickups that I liked the sound of!

Not necessarily. If the 1x10 is 8ohm and the 2x10 is 4ohm, the power will be spread evenly between all 3 speakers.

Never tried a 735A. Would probably want to buy one if I did, but for now I've cured my addiction to buying bass gear!

I never look at my knobs, I just do it by feel, a quick twiddle to see how far they are from min/max/centre is all that's required. The colour of them is irrelevant if there are no markers on them, and 90% of basses have no markers! But if you enjoy staring at knobs, knock yourself out!

The WD one is decent, I can attest to that. I was umming and ah-ing over a Spitfire, but ultimately turned off by the price and poor customer service. Heard of one case where someone's guards did not come out as expected, e.g. colours different to advertised with a massive ugly blotch in the center, and there was no offer of refunds or anything. I'd ask for detailed photos of the finished product before handing over any cash!
