  1. I won’t pretend to know much about or even be able to hear the differences between some of the fancy DIs mentioned here. But if you’re looking for an overdrive preamp pedal (which it sounds like if you are interested in the Darkglass Vintage) that sounds delicious with a P and flats, I would opt for a Tonehammer over the Vintage.
  2. Just bought a pedal from Sid and it arrived next day looking brand new. Cheers!
  3. If you've not tried the Darkglass stuff and have a recording interface setup at home, give the Darkglass plugins a whirl (I believe they have a free trial) to see how you get on! There is also a Pike Vulcan XL for sale in the classifieds which is very similar.

  6. What kind of stuff will you be playing, and with which bass? If I were in your position, and of going after more vintage sounds I would probably be looking at a REDDI. The Tonehammer is also great, and a fraction of the price.
  7. Actually I just tried this at high gain again and it sounds pretty good there too! Not a million miles away from my TAFM (Team Awesome Fuzz Machine). Closest I could recommend would be a Bass BB Preamp, or perhaps a Rodenberg 808B (I’ve yet to try one but it’s definitely in that ballpark). Or if you really liked the higher gain tones from it, maybe it’s a fuzz you’re after!
  8. Picked up a Mojomojo from the classifieds this week (well I had to buy at least one new toy to replace all the ones I’ve sold!) and very impressed with it. I’m surprised TC don’t market it as suitable for bass use! The top end is a bit muffled and it sounds best at low gain, but the low end is amazingly good, better than most ‘bass’ pedals. Just read from the TC blurb that the internal voltage is ramped up which undoubtedly helps with headroom, letting the full heft of your note attack through. If you want a mellow, warm sounding drive that sounds great for classic rock, blues, R&B, etc, I reckon this is one of the best options going regardless of price, and the best thing is it only costs £40 new!
  9. This won't hang around long at that price!
  10. The bass version compromises by combining attack and release into one knob, but adds an ace up its sleeve in the form of the HPF. This lets you filter out the low end from the part of the circuit that detects the peaks, and with it dialled in you can negate the issue that many single band compressors have where if you hit a low note hard, it makes the compressor clamp down so hard that it audibly impacts your overall volume until it recovers and swells back up again (depending on how fast your attack/release is set).
  11. That is a Metro 24! The Agro does a great low gain OD, it sounds a bit like a Marshall guitar amp in some ways. Like the dUg, I find it great as an always-on pedal, but not so much as something to stomp on mid-song. I don't think it has much actual low end loss, but it certainly doesn't boost/fatten the lows as much as some other pedals, and if stepping on something to make the track heavier for a specific section I do prefer something with an actual low end boost to it.
  12. It's still a great pedal, there just wasn't room for it on there! It would go on the board above if I didn't have all the octave up toys on there. The Joyo on that board is purely there as a guitar amp sim for the octave up signal, although it does sound good on regular bass too!
  13. I was just answering the question on which filters I decided to hang onto, not the general thread question! And @Breadbin, do tell everyone how amazing the big box Q-Tron is so that they can buy mine. Unless you need a spare?
  14. PMs all replied to: Wonder Filter, VT Bass, Two Notes Le Bass sold, a several more pending confirmation and payment!
  15. I can cheat and list two, since I have two boards! Tech21 DP-3X - studio hard rock sound in a box Mr Black FwonkBeta - funk in a box

I do wonder if some Spectracomps hiss more than others - I saw in a current thread on the pedal on Talkbass someone said they returned a hissy one then got a quiet one. Or perhaps they had different Toneprints on them! I'm very picky about noise though as I play through a PJB Bighead headphone amp that it otherwise silent so it's really obvious when a pedal is noisy, and my Spectracomp doesn't hiss. Which I was suprised about really, as I was expecting it to after reading conflicting reports!
  17. Lots of PMs to reply to but busy with family today - I will reply to you all this evening!
  18. Put two boards together today that will likely stay put for a while whilst I offload a bunch of pedals! I’ve run out of Velcro though so some are just being held by cables/gravity. Also ignore settings as they’d not been adjusted after put them together. Rock board. A bit of a squeeze and can’t quite reach all the buttons on the DP-3X, but it’s always on so no biggie. I’ve found the DP-3X to be so touch sensitive that I don’t need an extra dirt pedal, I just have to exercise more control! I do like to run a wah before it and delay/phaser at the end though, and that would pretty much just be more board if my band had not imploded. So since I’m playing mostly by myself, I’ve combined this with my faux Royal Blood style setup; ABY switch goes to the wah then the dUg on one side, and Tender/Whammy/Joyo/Delay/Phaser/Mimiq on the other. With the stereo doubler on the octave up and the bass panned central, it sounds amazing through headphones. I want to try a stereo phaser in place of the Phase 90 now! Funk board! VTDI is a very versatile pre, and there are great synth sounds to be found from running the Octabvre 100% wet into the BB Preamp and Fwonkbeta, or even both filters combined.
  19. I'll send pics of the hub in a mo. Q-Tron is indeed the big box original, there is a pic in an ancient for sale thread somewhere that was long overdue a bump! Partially triggered by an impending house move, mainly I want to reduce the number of toys I have so I can spend more of my practice time improving my playing rather than fiddling with knobs!

My mint & boxed Cali is now for sale should you feel the desire to acquire both...
  21. Time for a big old pedal sale! I have quite a few items here so have taken an initial shortcut of just whacking the lot up with prices, but photos and descriptions for each item are coming! All prices include UK postage, not interested in any trades as it goes against the concept of a clear out! Darkglass B3K v2 (£160) Photo: https://photos.app.goo.gl/ctNOgh4LjDznHG6q1 Bought to A/B with my old one - played it for a few minutes then boxed it back up, then left it too long to return. Effectively brand new! Lucid Audio Fuzz-o-potamus (£75) Photo: https://photos.app.goo.gl/jpdoUEygCr9bMMoA2 Tweaked Fuzz Face for bass with EQ and clean blend. Massive range from light overdrive to full on buzz with a lot of sub bass! Boss ODB-3 (£45) Photo: https://photos.app.goo.gl/WRllF0xiKZouTONt2 A few signs of wear but otherwise good! 22. Have you looked inside to confirm there isn't a trim control already there? Worth a look if not!

    Spectracomp

I have both and have owned the Keeley, Diamond, and EBS beforehand. I thought the Cali was the comp I was searching for, with the blend and HPF letting me even out the tone but still let of a lot of low end thump through. But it has been dethroned by the underdog, the Spectracomp. The stock preset at 8-10 o'clock on the dial is just perfect for me. 6 knobs on the Cali was always pretty taxing to dial in just right, just enough rope to hang yourself and too many knobs to think about. The Spectracomp is like someone took the most advanced multiband compressor on the market and got a top studio engineer to tweak dozens of parameters to perfection for typical bass use. They nailed it. No noise that I can detect with the stock preset either (others may vary) unless you crank the compression knob. Last time I A/B'd them, the Cali was noisier in fact, however it wasn't a fair test as there were other things in the chain and the Cali was on a daisy chain with a couple of analog drive pedals. Of course this is but one opinion and there are plenty who will think the Cali slays the TC. You'll only know for sure if you try both out yourself!
