  1. I also had a hum issues caused by a dimmer, but only when combined with the flat EBS cables which didn't have great shielding! Maybe try a simple DI box into the interface as a means to isolate ground loops etc?
  2. The pickups in the old ones are great, high output and aggressive, these look to be similar. I tried every Fender PJ in the shop one time and the 'Jazz' Bass Special was my favourite by far.
  3. I second the Yamaha recommendation - I went through a bunch of 5 strings including a Fender Precision and Jazz, but they were all too wide at the nut for me, until I found a BB415 that was 42mm, the same width as my 4-string P-Bass! I didn't get on with the Sterling Ray35 or Sandberg TT5 necks either. Ibanez would also be a good bet!
  4. Ok, technically that is a filter. But it's not a filter.
  5. Scan are legit, I bought various bits from them to build a PC about 10 years ago!
  6. My top 3: Octabvre, OC-2, Markbass But there's not much in it and I'd be very happy with either of them! Markbass might be the best choice for size alone!
  7. As far as I know the Octabvre Mini is no different in sound to the full size MkII / MkIII in TIM mode.
  8. Give some Tech21 stuff a try - Sansamp BDDI (of which there is a dirt cheap Behringer version, the BDI21 if you fancy dipping your toe in on the cheap), VTDI, YYZ, or DP-3X. The last 2 in particular - as the YYZ has a bass-heavy EQ'd clean channel and the DP-3X a crossover and compressor on the low end side. Also the Orange Bass Butler - there's one in the classifieds!
  9. I'd love to resurrect this but I know I'd never get around to doing it. I wonder if this might even have been mine at some point, I sold mine years ago and I don't think there are many of them around!

    Buffer

You don’t need one if you have an active bass, or a pedal with a buffered bypass early on in the signal path. It’s likely that you already have at least one in your chain already!
  11. Baby Sumo possibly, but is also a bit big for a pedalboard: https://www.guitarsoundsystems.com/gss-baby-sumo-ampxlite-bass-guitar-power-amp-c2x21844846 Personally I’d prefer to use a clean sounding bass amp so you can tweak your stage EQ without affecting FOH.
  12. Film (and instant film) cameras are seeing a massive resurgence also, used prices for old cameras are going up and up.

  14. Best tip when it comes to stacking, if you have a bright clanky sound set up, don’t boost into it with the same. It’s best to use a darker overdrive to boost into it; if you’re stacking a VTDI into the SH1 for example, turn the bite off on the VTDI.
  15. Keep both until you’ve compared them in a full band mix and/or at high volume. I preferred the VTDI in the end and sold the SH1!
  16. I had the Cali, then I upgraded to the TC Spectracomp and pocketed the difference! Multi-band compression is where it’s at if you have any kind of high mids / treble in your tone IMHO. Hyper Gravity is the same comp with more knobs, but the Spectracomp is dialled in for bass and comes with a bunch of bass presets... although it is possible to map these to the Hyper Gravity using the settings that someone dumped into a spreadsheet!
  17. Line6 are still releasing updates years after the initial release though, I wonder if these other brands would do the same?
  18. This is a good choice - I've spent years and £s trying out various pedals (including most of those mentioned so far) and have come full circle back to a similar setup. I had an SFT into a VT on my board for a long time back in my gigging days, at the moment I am very much liking the combination of the SolidgoldFX Beta and Tech21 YYZ.
  19. It’s supposed to be pronounced Hot Tone, but I always say Hoe Tone!
  20. I wish I weighed my BB415 that I picked up for peanuts brand new when they were end of line. It was light as a feather compared to the 1025X that came in to replace it - I should've kept it!
  21. I've found the same with mine - 80ohms is higher than average so I guess they need a bit more juice. My Focusrite 2i2 just about drives them well enough, but they sound much better through the PJB Bighead. They sound awful through a lesser headphone amp like a Zoom multi FX! I wasn't bowled over by my DT770s when I first got them, but they either broke in or I got used to them because I love them now. I tried the PJBs out but they didn't come close and felt more like a toy in terms of build quality. I did get to try out a set of what I think were HD280 Pros once and they sounded amazing - I'd love to pick up a pair to compare. Interestingly this was at a Muse gig where we paid the extra ticket price to gain entry to the 'Muse-eum' where loads of their gear was on display including a guitar and bass hooked up to a headphone rig. There was a big queue to have a go on Matt Bellamy's guitar, but nobody interested in the bass so I had a nice long go on Chris Wolstenholme's Status all to myself!
  22. Just ordered a lighter gauge set of the regular nickels to try next, 40-125 EXL220-5. Never tried a light set and I think it’ll benefit my agressive playing style.
  23. I'd string through the bridge to play it safe. The break angle isn't much different to a traditional string through body design, since those designs usually have the string hole behind the bridge in a similar position, just the string bends twice instead of once before it reaches the ferrule.
