Effects and their interaction with pickup configurations
dannybuoy replied to James_Taylor's topic in Effects
I’ll respectfully disagree slightly with distortion working better with a Jazz than a P, depends how you EQ everything. One of the best distorted sounds out there on the planet is dUg Pinnick of Kings X and other bands like KXM. He has generally always used a Seymour Duncan APB split pick up in all of his bases, except for his 12 String.
That's not quite what I said... I said that out of the Darkglass pedals, the B7K is a better match with a J, and the VMTD a better match with a P! -
Effects and their interaction with pickup configurations

Short answer is yes, a Jazz, or PJ, works much better with the B7K and AO than a P! The P is all about the midrange so plays better with the Vintage circuit, whereas the B7K tends to hype the bass and upper mids, fitting well with the natural EQ curve of a Jazz with both pickups on. -
It is a great pedal. You can get sounds out of this that are impossible with other filters. It did have some downsides for me though: - Menus. I hate all pedals with menus! At least the software is very good. - It needs isolated power otherwise it's very noisy. It's also noisy when powered from USB. Silent with its own supply though! - You can hear the filter go up and down by discreet steps which can sound a bit like crackling. The pedal position is probably encoded to a range of 0-128 or similar and then sent to the processor, then the filter snaps to these values rather than implementing some kind of smoothing algorithm. That could probably be fixed in software though! Fun fact - Sonuus HQ is just a couple of miles away from me, right near where I rehearse! When I emailed to enquire about how to adust the rocker tension, he offered to do it for me if I brang it down there, top chap.

If you add a pedal to your cart it lets you select UK for $40 postage... If you were after the JoshWah though hold tight as I might be putting one up for sale. Getting rid of the majority of my pedals to just keep the essentials!

You might enjoy a Cream Pie? http://basschat.co.uk/topic/313405-ken-smith-papa-tone-factor-cream-pie-deluxe/

Expecting this to be pretty terrible. https://www.pledgemusic.com/projects/fieldy

No blend or reverse sweep on the JoshWah, and it's low pass. It sounds a lot like a Mutron III. It gets pretty clean with the gain down low, but not 100%. It has more range and is easier to dial in than the Fwonkbeta. It is a contender for sure, but 'the best' would depend on which bass your playing, what you're playing on it, your fingers, and your ears! Each shines in different situations. I've had it for several months and might let it go as I'm about to massively downsize my gear collection to clear out some clutter and focus on what I need in the band. But like I did with the MXR I'll probably change my mind several times (already sold one of those and bought it back again)!

On the board is just a Hotone Bass Press wah pedal. Discumbobulator, MXR and JoshWah I just like to play with at home every now and then!

They only recommend that because some digital pedals leak noise into the power line that gets picked up by other pedals. Some, but not all. EHX, Digitech and Zoom are notorious for it, but Mooer and TC have pretty good filtering in my experience and are fine sharing power. Like I said, experimentation is the way! You don't get it of jail free by putting two of these noisy digital pedals on the same splitter either. Especially as many now like TC and Strymon have an analog dry through signal path. It's not just digital ones you want to watch out for, any pedals that double to 18V internally might need isolating too, as I found to my dismay with the RMI Basswitch compressor.

A JoshWah should come to just under £200, including $40 postage, VAT and the £8 handling fee. But I might sell mine for less... The distortion on it is no replacement for a dedicated OD though.

You should try the OmniCabSim, Andy! Not many about over here though. Not seen the Captor before though, looks great on paper as long as the speaker sim isn't overly dark like the one in the Le Bass? There are a couple of different vibrating platforms on the market to give you a big rig feel when using IEMs, including one for sale in this forum somewhere. I'd feel like a bit of a knob standing on a neon-lit platform at a gig though!

I had the B9 and C9, kept the B9. Lent it to a friend who keeps forgetting to bring it out when I see him! Must get it back! How's your filter quest going Al? I've decided to keep the MXR btw, thanks for not buying it off me!

It doesn't matter at the end of the day - you can get the mA rating from the manual, and test manually in a daisy chain to see if it creates noise when sharing power with other pedals. Those are the only two things that are important!
-
I think pretty much all tuners except the old school ones with the moving needle are digital. That doesn't necessarily mean it needs isolating though - I know my Polytune doesn't have any problems on daisy chain with other pedals.

Nice selection. Always wondered how the Mel9 fares on bass...

Opinions on this pick guard please, just out of curiosity.
dannybuoy replied to leschirons's topic in General Discussion
Keep it, looks great. Tort on black is a good combo as long as it's red and not brown. Spitfire aren't the only ones making quality tort these days, the guards that WD Music sell for example are pukka. -
Try LaBella copper, gold, or white nylons. I have a set of coppers waiting to be tried out on my Godin A4 fretless, but the Chromes that come stock sound great so I've not felt the need to yet!

The Cioks DC5 fits underneath also. 2x 300mA output and 3x 100mA outputs, not sure if that is sufficient, but it would be if you were planning on putting a supply under each Nano I guess! I've powered 400mA pedals from the 300mA sockets before so they are rated rather conservatively I reckon. Less overall output than the Ojai, but more flexibility with 12V and 18V options should you need those. And they make 3 way daisy chain leads so you can run multiple low-draw pedals from a single outlet. Hotrox are the only UK stockists that I know of btw!

Maybe with the blend at nil also... Mine's still pretty dirty with the gain all the way off! But set to the alpha side it's a great dirty amp sim when used like that.

Can't you just pull the silk off?
-
The Sub'n'Up is a good shout also, one of the few that do two octaves down.

If you are after trying to get the most realistic bass guitar sound out of a guitar with flawless tracking, I say Digitech Whammy V. Also the Whammy Ricochet as it's smaller, but I feel it has slightly more latency than its bigger brother (I have both and AB'd them recently!).
I didn't find it to be wimpy. Certainly a marmite sort of sound though. Also, I much preferred it with more vintage voiced cabs.
I agree with this. I love the sound, but it doesn't work in my current band which calls for a brighter sound. But for playing blues etc with a P and flats, I have never heard a better amp.
I seem to recall molan (of this parish) remarking that the TH500 used the same Class D power stage as the allegedly 900W Streamliner!
That would explain the wimpiness of the Streamliner 600 I had, it probably had the same module as the TH350!

Talkbass user AzureSkies has been producing his own pedals for a while now and has been gaining somewhat of a cult following. Now he finally has a site! http://broughtonaudio.bigcartel.com http://youtu.be/8P0LLCOC2-g
