Coincidence strikes! Just started a thread in 'other instruments' about how easy, or otherwise, it is to play drums as i've just taken them up. In all the recent startup bands I've talked to about playing bass they've all said "sure, we're ready to rock, but we can't find a bl**dy drummer!". The lesson is, if I want to guarantee a gig, don't learn bass, learn to play drums and i'll be chased from mercury to pluto with invites to play!

OK, so it's a really badly phrased question, but does anyone on here play drums as well as bass, and do you think it's 'easy' to learn to play a simple/straight-forward groove on the drums in a band, and is it 'easier' than learning and playing a bass line in a band? I had a heated conversation with a muso friend who claimed that some instruments are very much inherently easier to learn and play than others, and drums were particularly easy. I'm learning to play drums at the moment, and I'm not so sure...

Ouch... can't do the bass much good to be treated like that though? Have pity on the poor little instrument!

Will it be his rocky stuff or some of his more recent 'folky' stuff? I've covered some of the later stuff ('Kill to Get Crimson' album tracks) and there are some really solid bass lines to those. His work has definitely changed, and stayed just as high quality, since the DS days. Great stuff

Smile and play the bass well - if they can't appreciate that, find a proper band?

I genuinely believe that this is all part of being creative. it's maybe not much consolation, but that part of us that makes us excited and want to make music, is the part of us that sometimes needs us to close down and become quiet and withdrawn and not want to create. It may come back tomorrow, or maybe in months or years, but I bet your drive to make music will be back at sometime. In the meantime try to enjoy other aspects of life.

Be very, very, careful about bass direct. I went in the other day for a 'look around' and came out with a Vigier 5 stringer... Mark must have some subliminal auto-suggestion track running in the background: 'ooh... look at this bass, it's beautiful, buy it now... oh, no, wait, look at *that* bass over there, buy that one instead... oh, no, wait, look at... ' and so on

I'm slightly overwhelmed with options now thanks again to all these suggestions, i'll make a list - it makes me feel as though I'm in control!

Wow - that's about two weeks of non-stop listening already... thanks for all the suggestions. I'll definitely report back. There seems to be a really strong culture surrounding the blues, with lots of musicians suggesting that it's a foundational genre i.e. for any kind of modern music making (i.e. not part of the classical world) not understanding or knowing about the blues will make you less of a musician in some way. I don't know about this, but it feels like i'm discovering something really important about music, even if it's late on

I have a list of 6-8 possible tracks as a starter - 3 of them are Stevie Ray Vaughan, there's some Jimi Hendrix (interesting huh?) and some 'classics' like Crossroads Blues...
