1. A Lakland is a fine instrument indeed! Glad that you are having fun with your BG cocco.
2. I use a ProCo RAT for a thick, warm tone (the filter control really works well with bass). That's the only full on fuzz I use these days, but I have used an original Marshall Guv'nor too which was brutal. I am contiplating a purchase of a Soundblox Multiwave Distortion Pro. It's a bit pricey, the the amount of different tones you can get out of that thing is amazing. Anything from tube warmth to synth type fuzz. I already own the Envelope Filter Pro and it has been an incredible pedal, so I am expecting the same quality from the Soundblox Multiwave Distortion Pro.
3.
NS10s were the most awful items to mix on IMO.
Thank goodness folks are wising up to that. I hate them too. They are okay for doing vocals, but beyond that I think they are the most brittle sounding monitors I have used. Good for play back reference, but mixing down? Forget it. I know of a couple of engineers that will use them for everything...play back, mixing and mastering. Usually, engineers that don't know how to mix live drums and bass properly in my experience!
4. I have a '04 ovangkol body and neck BO and never had any problems with neck dive. One of the most comfy basses I have ever owned.
5. I have been in a band with sibling members and that can be stressful at times. Partners? Totally new experience for me. It could work out just fine and of course has every chance of not working out. I just don't want to mess the other guys about. She brought up a good point a couple of weeks ago. With both us being in the band we both earn from it. As long as we can treat each other with professionalism it could be good for us financially as well as getting our musical kicks.
6. My girlfriend has sat in a couple of rehearsals last year. Her two comments to me in the car on the way back were "You are really bossy, aren't you?" and "You need to relax and smile more...don't be so miserable!". Both comments wound me up. I replied to her "I consider myself to be assertive, not bossy" and "I need to concentrate on what I am doing and listen out for the other musicians". Anyway, that sparked an argument. Things like that I can't be doing with. Okay, we have little disagreements in the band during rehearsals and gigs...I'm not denying it, but nothing that warrants 3 days of silence or maybe a projectile kitchen appliance aimed at my head when I get back home!
7. I play for a soul/motown/funk covers band and for larger gigs we sometimes draft in a brass section...bumping up our line up to 9-10 musicians on stage when we can afford it and have the space to do so. However, in the past these occasions were few and far between and its hard to get the same horn players together that work well with us. So, with a lot of well paid wedding and function dates coming up for us this year we are thinking about putting together a permanent brass section together that will rehearse and play with us. Again, finding the right musicians who are happy to just to play the odd sparse riff and little melody lines are hard to come by. Its not very exciting musical platform for an experienced and talented horn player as they won't be required to play much in each song or sometimes never. But, both our keyboard player and myself have girlfriends that are very talented sax and trumpet players. They have both expressed an interest joining the band. Whilst the rest of the guys are up for it both the keys player and myself are a bit apprehensive. Situations like this always reminds me of the dramas that Fleetwood Mac experienced! Does anyone play in a band along with their partner that can share their experiences, good or bad?
8. My girlfriend gives me hassle for having three electric basses taking up space, but four DB's in the house??? I would never get away with just one!
9. I went for medium frets too. Stainless I believe.
10. I have been a customer of the Gallery for a long time and I have always found the guys to be friendly and informative. I have read negative feedback posts on BC and other forums about their customer service. Maybe I am one of the lucky ones. But, saying that...I haven't been at the Gallery for a long time as the Bass Centre is a bit easier to travel to for me.
11.
- I didn't like anything he played there! odd way to play. Maybe in his band it makes sense
I'm a big fan of Ryan's playing, but I have I admit I wasn't that fussed about the demo myself. He is usually a class bass player, but he has recently developed that octave slap thing. Works well with Mudvayne...probably not so much in this case. This has been the only demo I have come across so far.
12. Great work Gelfin! The date is in my diary.
13. Here's a demo of the bass by Ryan Martinie. Not the best sound quality and he starts the demo by doing his octave tap technique which doesn't sound right for this bass, but does play some nice melodic stuff towards the end. You'll get a rough idea of what the bass is like. Can't wait to try one myself and see how it compares to the Star 1 which I absolutely adore. http://youtu.be/cBfEIdY3pso
14. I'm in the same place myself. I now listen to BBC radio 2 or 6 instead of radio 1 these days. Very little new music interests me. Well, in the UK at least. There hasn't been much movement in this country for the past 10yrs.
15. Be very careful about what you say to the press!
16. If you want the best of both worlds (J and MM) Sandbergs are very good or maybe a Lakland. The Ray tone is also my favourite bass tone and my Lakland 55-02 can give a pretty convincing MM, J or P tone. Once you find the right pickup balance and split the pup coils it's almost like having three basses in one.
17. That's like buying a Ferrari and then replacing the engine with a motor from an Austin Allegro. Such a shame.
18. Weather Report are not the only culprits. There is some early Herbie Hancock (who is a God to me) synth stuff which makes me cringe at times. A lot of other jazz/funk acts were experimenting with synths in the 70's...some of it cool...some of it tragic. It was a new technology back then and I guess those bands wanted to see how far they could take it.
19.
Once found either a Behringer or PV (cant remember which for sure - the amp on top was the other one of those two - if you get my drift) 810 in a rehearsal room. I bought my rack and plugged it in to this thing and it was just shockingly poo, no definition, no bottom, no punch and pants all volume for a cab the size of an African dictatorship - not much fun!
I too have played through this amp (I think it's called Ultrabass 1200) and 810 cab at a rehearsal room in Pontypridd whilst at an audition about 4yrs ago. Absolute garbage. They even had the nerve to charge me for using it.
20. Very nice spec. Followed!
21. Not yet. I haven't contacted Jon for ages. I'll drop him and email to see where he is at with the build.
22. Beautiful
23.
I'm really surprised to see that a 2x12 is now more popular than what I considered the 'standard' 4x10!
I would have been too, but I picked up my first 212 a few months ago and I have found it to be incredibly versatile either as a standalone cab or paired up with another cab. I play with a pretty flat tone on most occasions and I don't need masses of low end, so 410's and 210's suit me fine, but I find that the 212 gives me the low end when required whilst remaining clear, punchy and loud. Sounds belting with 210 on top for a medium sized full range stack.
24. Certainly do not use car spray paint. I did that with a scratch plate on one of my first Strats and the chemicals reacted really badly with the plastic. Placing it on a log fire would have done a better job!
25. A producer I have been working with regularly for a while did a remix of an I Wish - Stevie Wonder cover that my band Nation Stack did a couple of years ago. I decided to put down a completely different bass track to give it a gospel feel. It's quite raw as the remix only took an afternoon to do, but we're quite chuffed how it turned out. If we can get permissions to publish it we will go back to it and give it some more attention. Click on the link at the bottom of my post signature to listen to it. Hope you like it!
