Very unhappy with Ernie Ball Cobalt strings
shizznit replied to longtimefred's topic in General Discussion
I tried a set when they were first released into the market and the freshness dropped off quickly for me too. First impressions last and I will never use them again. -
Lots of love also for Zender's playing from me. I still listen a lot to Jamiroquai's first 3 albums, and love them as much now as I did in the early nineties. Paul Turner's stuff with Jamiroquai is great too though. I think with Zender it's all about the groove, and Emergency on Planet Earth and Return of the Space Cowboy albums in particular, his playing really is the driving force behind so many of the songs. What really amazes me most about Zender though is that since his split from Jamirioquai (in 1998?) he seems to have been on very few recordings. I think he cropped up on Mark Ronson's 'Versions' a few years ago, and did a bit of session work with Omar, but, other than that I'm not aware of many other major recordings where his bass playing can be heard? I wish he'd get back in the studio more.
Good point. You would think that a player of his stature would be beating off work from high profile artists with a large stick. Doesn't make sense

Stuart is one of the best funk players of all time. IMHO, he is up there with Larry Graham, Louis Johnson, Bernard Edwards, Bootsy, Stanley Clarke...to name just a few. I saw them play for the first time at Colston Hall in Bristol in 1994. I was already a fairly experienced guitar then and I had no ambition to switch to bass until I saw Stuart play. That evening changed my life as a musician. Sold all my guitar gear and replaced it with bass kit, quit the band I was playing guitar for at the time and never looked back. It's not so much his technical ability, but his feel and timing is what really appeals to me as a musician. I don't necessarily play like Stuart and I never wanted to emulate his style 100%, but when I think to myself about my role in a band and what effect it has I always think of Stuart Zender. Stay tight, stay musical and let the other instruments breathe and I think thats what Zender does best. I would love to see a Jamiroquai re-union with Zender, Smith, Katz, Akingbola and D-Zire, but thats never going to happen.

He has to give more spec info about the rig if he wants to sell it at that price. Kinda like buying a mail order Russian bride (not that I know anything about that!) -
I have read some reviews from some owners that use the HD410 with an EBS amp and swear by that pairing. The EBS cabs are very good, but from what I have read the amps come alive even more with a Berg. I'm not one for blind purchasing without trying out the kit first, but I might on this occasion (saves me the trip to Warwick anyway!).
A 5 minute delay is hardly a justification for not going bass shopping!
Hehe! She came back home early and arrived as I was packing up my amp to take over to Bass Direct. Total surprise!

My go to bass will always be a 5 string mostly because I have very long fingers and the width of the fingerboard feels a bit more natural for me, but I do swap over to a 4 once in a while. I will also use a 4 when I am teaching as none of my students have 5 strings, so it helps to avoid confusion when they watch me repeat what they are playing. I don't feel that my playing style changes when I switch over to a 4. I notice that I will use the E string whilst playing up the dusty end a bit more than I would if I was playing a 4. Dunno why really...its a weird sub-conscience thing.

I didn't make it over to the shop yesterday due to impromptu plans by my missus to spend some time celebrating our anniversary! I will get over there on the weekend to try the cab. Thanks for all your comments guys.

I have some time to kill this afternoon, so I am going to pop up to Bass Direct in a bit to check out the Berg HD410 he has in stock. Mark is confident it's going to be spot on for my playing style, tone and demand. I'm pretty confident I will like it too as I love the old AE cabs and I tried the HD212 with my EBS Reidmar the last time I visited...that was a fantastic pairing! Anyway, testing any cab or amp in a shop doesn't always give a true reflection to how it will perform in the real world. Are there any BC members that do own a HD410 that can give me any feedback about how it holds up during a performance acoustically and power wise? I'll be using my EBS amps through it.

I find that Ashdown amps, especially the ABM models are quite fluffy sounding. Not that I don't like that...I do like the Ashdown tone, but they don't work out well with me personally. Passive basses do sound fantastic through these amps. If you are looking for a big trouser shaking tone then you can't go wrong with an Ashdown.

I love their speakers....never been a fan of their amps, apart from the old 300w mkII amps. I had a Firebass head on hire in Spain once and I didn't bond with it in anyway at all. I played through an SVT on the last two nights and the cabs were spot on. Quite impressed.

I have been away working for the past couple of days and just signed onto BC. I never expected this kind of reaction towards this bass!! LOL!!!

Hehe! Provocative design, isn't it?

...it would be blown on this! http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/Skjold_SS_Whale_5.html Oh my!

Been in that situation myself and it's a tough one. You have to draw the line between was is an audition and what is a rehearsal for them. Asking you do play their entire back catalogue for an audition is out of order. Make sure you can nail at least half a dozen or so. That should be enough to show if you are good enough to get the gig or not.

I'm a huge Hartke fan. I used a HA5000 head through two XL410's as my tour rig for a few years before switching to Warwick. Beautiful rig...I do miss it very much. Don't be fooled by the price of Hartke kit against their competitors. You get a heck of a lot of bang for your buck. If you like a fast attack and well defined punchy tones then you can't go wrong with Hartke. Plus, the aluminium speakers look the business on stage!
