Always leave them wanting less ...
shizznit replied to Happy Jack's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
That's simply ridiculous. Should be bright pink with stars! -
Jens Ritter has a word with chinese copy guy....
shizznit replied to bubinga5's topic in General Discussion
Nice one Jens, though I have always thought he ripped off Carl Thompson with the Okon model that he builds! -
Just been playing some more and I love it, just tweaking the mids here and there
hehe! I know what you mean. I couldn't stop playing around with my EBS HD350 for days after I bought it. I was finding so many usable and great sounding tones every time I tweaked a control. Still doing that after 8yrs of owning it! I love buying new gear that inspires and excites you

Flea is a brutal player and Les is just plain nuts. I have no opinion on who is better because they both offer something different from each other, but I am a big fan of both. Love em or hate em, they have both been very influential players over the past 20+ years

jcater - welcome to the Reidmar club!

I spread myself as thinly as I can because I listen to so many genres. I have played pop, metal, hip-hop, dub-step, dance, blues, folk, funk and even country (once!). My live band plays soul/funk covers, but we also do play our own material when we can squeeze it in which sounds very acid jazz. I would say I am a funk player at heart. I stay away from jazz though. I love it and I have listened to jazz from a young age, but I have had a lot of failures and embarassments! One day I will nail it!

A couple of good guys to listen to using lots of different fuzz, wah and delay effects are Tim Commerford (Rage Against The Machine) and Justin Chamberlain (Tool). Both of those guys play with some really awesome bass tones using an array of different effects.

I use effects and love experimentating with sonic textures using any instrument. It inspires me and perhaps it helps to inspires the people around me. That said, more than often I don't use any effects at all. No matter if I am performing a gig or in a studio my pedal board is always set up. It's there if I need it. Some people I work with are very straight edge and simply want to hear a normal bass tone, but I do work with other folks that are open to experimentation. Horses for courses really, but I like to consider myself to be flexible and approachable in any circumstance. FX are fun!

Bit of fun in photoshop with a laney cab and TB500.
shizznit replied to Dave Tipping's topic in Amps and Cabs
I want to retro up my EBS cabs using cloth instead of the chrome grille (never liked it). Really like the look of the EBS Classic Line cabs, but much prefer the sound of the Proline Cabs. I like to see the speakers concealed. Look neater and presentable on stage I thinks -
How To Sound Good At Slap Bass (without being that good)
shizznit replied to noteman's topic in General Discussion
I'm not a proficient slap player, but I do okay. I will bust it out if 'asked'. It doesn't really form any significant part of my style and I never wanted to concentrate on that technique as religiously as a lot of players out there. I'm certinaly not on the same level as Mark King or Les Claypool! You need to have a very good inbuilt clock in your head as well as the fingering dexterity for that technique. One doesn't exist without the other, even for basic phrasing. You have to play with confidence because you can make yourself sound like a right t*t when you mess up! Cool lesson for beginners. Thanks for posting. -
A few words on the subject of professionalism
shizznit replied to Dom in Dorset's topic in General Discussion
Being a d*ck in this industry gets you nowhere and carrying that reputation with you will shorten your longevity as an artist. Just ask Fred Durst! -
I am a smoker, but I never smoke in the house or allow guests to do the same. I let my friend borrow a bass whilst I was teaching him and when he lost interest and returned it to me it wreaked of smoke (of the exotic variety) and the case curiously smelled of curry!? I couldn't get rid of the smell of the case and disposed of it at the dump and I took quite a bit of time getting rid of the smell on the bass. I was quite annoyed, but it could have been worse with an oil finished bass as it would have absorbed the smell and would have been even harder to get rid of.

I'm up for a Cardiff bash :-)
I would have to agree with you, your spellings gone to pot and you can't remember your EQ settings. Its all down hill for you from now on
Yeah, I'll be arriving at my gig tonight with my new mobility scooter. Now that's the new rock 'n' roll entrance!
It was not the battery cover it was the two terminals that the battery clip onto. The battery clips into the two metal terminals and the two metal terminals sit in an ovel piece of plastic. This oval piece of plastic snapped away from the two metal terminals. Also, my pickups, they are not mounted on springs. The bolts go through the pickups and screw into a brass ferrule that is inserted into the wood in the pickup cavity. With the pickup removed, if I screwed the bolts into the ferrule as they should be, the bolt wobbles as if the thread is not tight enough. Wrapping a little PTFE tape around the thread of the bolt gave a tighter fit and stopped the wobble. There was no springs used at all on my LX4.
Ahhh...come to think of it, the same thing happened with one of my Corvette Prolines. Your description brought it all back to me (I am getting old!)
Don't go choking, I might need some more advice in the future
Hehe!!! And check my spelling!
Hey Shizznit, I am a little confused by these settings. You have the Mids set to flat (12 O Clock) on these two settings but the Freq at either 800hz or 400hz. I thought that changing the frequency dial with the mids set flat at 12 o clock makes no difference as the two are linked? So having the frequency set or 800hz or 400hz would make no difference and you might as well keep it set at 12 o clock which is 600hz. Thats how I am finding it on my Reidmar. With the mids at 12 o clock, moving the frequency dial does nothing tonally.
Yeah...well spotted mate. Doing it from memory and and made a typo! Should be the other way around... Lakland - mid +20% / freq 600Hz MTD - mid -20% / freq 600Hz Warwick - mid -20% / freq 600Hz (sometimes 800Hz if using the bridge pup) Should have choked before posting...sorry for the confusion!
Eden WTX 500. The worst amp I've had.
Why's that mate? I'm not the worlds biggest David Eden fan, but I thought that amp was pretty good when I tried it at the Bass Gallery.
It also raises an interesting question, has anyone here ever had a duff warwick? I've never played one I didn't think was excellent quality, there were I couple I didn't get on with but the Quality was still there..
I have been to the Warwick factory and it's not like a production line like Fender which is reminiscent of a car plant. There is obviously a production line method being used in the Warwick factory, but the guys on the floor do take a lot of attention building the basses especially during the finishing and QC stages. There is still very much a handmade element to every bass they build there. Personally speaking, every bass I have had has been bullet proof and the quality and craftsmanship has been brilliant. I have owned stock off the rack and custom made models and there has been no significant difference in the quality of all of the instruments.
Aye but as the price of things have gone up and inflation has happened, musicians salaries haven't gone up in 20 years!
Yup...musicians have been hit hard too. Agencies are offering work 25% less than they did 5 years ago and very rarely include expenses in the fee these day, venues are paying less and the circuit is getting thinner on the gorund as the months go by because venues are going under. So, for musicians trying to earn a crust pay is going backwards rather being frozen. This is why I implore people to insure their gear, especially in the current economic climate, because if you have to replace an expensive piece of kit out of your own pocket it is going hit your pocket harder now than it has done before. Anyway...digressing!
-
I agree with you on that point. But surely they have always been expensive?
True, but as the price has gone up my salary has been frozen for the past three years. Every day living is more expensive these days because there is no much inbalance in the economy. That's the horrible mess we are in as consumers. My salary has always increased in line with inflation, so if the figure attached to an item increased the following year I could afford because my salary has increased in line with that anyway.

MarkBass F1 or EA Micro for doubling? Or A.N.Other?
shizznit replied to Clarky's topic in EUB and Double Bass
From conversations I have had with DB players the EA amps are one of the best. I have an EA iAmp, but I don't play upright, so I can't really give my recommendation other than EA gear is very good. Been using mine for direct recording for about 4yrs now and it's probably the most transparent and functional amp I have ever heard. I would probably look at the LMII and LMIII Markbass amps if you want to go down that route because you have a balanced XLR input which would be a better for a DB. Not many amps out there have that. My iAmp does, but I have never used it. -
Pure unadulterated sex....well I think so anyway
shizznit replied to Sibob's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Is it just me, or is that outrageously expensive? $2200 for a '79 Mustang? Yer 'avin' a giraffe ...
I'm with you mate. My old man said that Fender could give these away when the first came onto the market. No one was interested. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder though. -
I agree with you Eude...I think Warwick are just about to start sliding on that slippery slope of pricing themselves out of the 'off the rack' market.
