Original Bands wanted to audition for new TV Series
philparker replied to Harryboylad's topic in General Discussion
Sounds good - I'll be watching the finished series! -
Have to add that Helen Sanderson is a beautiful lady isn't she?
...and beautiful on the inside as well!

Has anyone repaired the flimsy wire on a Fishman Full Circle? I've got an intermittent signal and a flimsy wire going into the Full Circle, but I note that one of the flat circular sides has 4 precision (micro) screws holding it on. So can I remove that, shorten the wire by about 1 cm and resolder, perhaps adding a bit of heat shrink for additional support?

Thoroughly enjoyed it and totally agree with the points above especially about the rock section. What I also like is there are no egos amongst the judges and they are either complimentary or nice when things go wrong. The classical adjudicator, Helen Sanderson, was my guitar teacher for four years until recently and very, very strict when it came to musicality and get everything right, she is also one of the most sought adjudicators in the country for exams and such - she really knows her stuff, but she only had positive contributions to say about the candidates. Needless to say, I've watched it and recorded it from the start!

If you want to do arco as well, I would suggest Evah Pirazzi Weichs!

Great work - many thanks!

New DB on the way from Thomann - "kerbside" delivery?
philparker replied to franzbassist's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Some people have had them delivered to find that the sound post has collapsed/fallen over and needed resetting, which is a pain, so it is worth checking for that before you start to string up! -
Quite surprised that someone who got the other questions right didn't know that!
Quite agree! We had many a debate in my guitar society about the difference between Rit and Rall, but no discussion whatsoever about plagal cadences!

You can probably buy a really good second hand fully carved for £1200 to £3k depending on your available budget - fully carved is much better for arco than ply.

Opinions, sage words, profundity, Help
philparker replied to michaelmcg's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Apart from Basschat? Musical Chairs is your best option! Take a look at the selection for sale, once you get into the £5k to £10k that site is probably the easiest to shift your instrument, (£10k to £40k can take a bit longer!) but be prepared to wait for up to 6 months for a buyer. You might get lucky and find a seller on Basschat as Paul Bryant DBs are popular and well known, but timing is the thing. Good Luck! -
I had the opposite dilemma as in I wanted to learn jazz, but could only find a classical tutor and knowing it would be good for my development I went down that route for the first two years. Initially I divided my practise between scales, bowing exercises and pieces. I also set a timer on my iPad so as not to worry about the time, but as it can get tiring I limited myself to 20 minutes on each discipline. I used the ABRSM guide to get me going through the grades. Being a 'musician' anyway I had no problem with reading music and understanding music, but my tutor did remind me that I wasn't a natural with the bow (after 40 years on guitar and 35 years of bass!). For the lower grades of 3 - 5, I learned almost all of the set exam pieces to give me a broader experience as well as scales and arpeggios. I came in at grade 6 and learned 3 pieces out of each section before choosing my exam pieces and had to find a piano player to play with, I booked 3 sessions with him before the exam. If you are going to take the grades and have a choice of teachers try and find a tutor who can play and accompany you on piano! Experiment with different rosin and even different bows if you can. I now have two good bows, both sound and feel different, but are much better and easier to use than the cheap one I started with! I play both sitting down (I bought a stool) and standing because of a shoulder injury. You may also have to experiment with strings? I also use a mirror (occasionally). I personally find a tuner too distracting, if your bass is in tune you can use other references to check your intonation, but eventually your own ear has to be up to the job. I spent a fortune on sheet music. I wouldn't necessarily buy a classical DB album, but playing it is still good fun and rewarding and I never intend to let skill fade in! Good luck!

13/15 - I'm embarrassed, I was too cocky and did it too quickly: that will teach me!

Some good points there, especially the 5-string being more useful for this. It happens to me very often, the two line-ups I play with often change key up or down a tone to the singer on the day. The guitarist are using capos most of the time anyway and don't notice it. Therefore, when constructing my bass lines in the first place I always consider what would happen with an open string for example, I also try and play mid-fretboard as a preference and be comfortable moving up and down...and of course knowing every single note on the fretboard without having to think about it.

Don't let curiosity take you to the next level - there's lots not to trust about it: would your band look to try and bring in a new guitarist from the States? of course not - it's the start of a scam!

Strings recommendations - Volume vs Ease (Slap and Pizz)
philparker replied to DanOwens's topic in EUB and Double Bass
I don't think they're especially loud as a string, but neither are they quiet, I played Basschat's "Steve's" (from Radcliffe) Ply DB with Silver Slaps and it had a great tone & projection compared to my carved DB with Belcantos! However, they are great for pizz - and I would assume slap (I haven't played slap) and of course they are great value! Edit: I meant to add that the volume & projection will generally come from your DB, with minor differences in strings and you certainly won't be disadvantaged with Silver Slaps! -

Probably Innovation Silver [or gold?] Slaps! -

I use Guitar Pro 6, but I started on Guitar Pro 4! I haven't used it for a while, but when I had this problem I would revert to writing in tab mode and then back to notation.

Sting famously used it in Moon Over Bourbon Street - and I though it sounded fantastic...until I got used to the sound and tone of a really good acoustic double bass and now listening to Sting with Christan McBride playing Consider me Gone - is now what I consider a really good bass sound!

I Bought a Yamaha Nathan East bass from Julio, cash-on-collection - a great guy and a pleasant transaction. Highly recommended!

Later..with Jools Tonight 16th may 2015
philparker replied to skidder652003's topic in General Discussion
I'm watching it again, now, she is fantastic - I love the band with the string section and the overall mix! -
Even though EUB's should be easier to set up by the user I would still consider giving it to a good Luthier to have a set up carried out.

Any foot switch tuner recommendations? Boss tu2?
philparker replied to lowlandtrees's topic in EUB and Double Bass
I use the TC Polytune 2, works a treat on all strings, however, I've not had a problem with a cheap clip-on placed on the bridge neither, but I do prefer the Polytune, which is battery operated, especially on stage with my fretless EB as well.
