1. No, it's Lauren Pierce (associated with Geoff) - check out her YouTube videos first and then decide if you wan to enrol?
2. Be prepared to travel - it's often necessary with DB. Travel can be eased if you have lessons once a fortnight or even once a month, just concentrate on finding a really good teacher and accept you may have to drive for up to 2 hours - it's not that uncommon. Good Luck!
3. Innovation Golden Slaps, string set for sale £65 including UK postage and original package. Mint condition - only used for two days on the bass, as I much preferred the second hand Velvet Garbo's I had.
4. AER Bass One
5. There's something about this clip I like?
6. Without repeating everything Marc S has detailed - I would go for either the Eminence or the Yamaha SLB 200.
7. Clarky put that link on a few years ago to answer different questions primarily about Velvet strings - as it is an on-going quest. I bought some second hand Garbos, which are great for pizz, but I can confirm that they do not bow very well at all!!
8. I have now narrowed my main bows to two: one main and one back-up, both decent quality, but I have had my cheaper bows re-haired in the past and it makes a tremendous difference - even if the re-hair cost half of what the bow was worth! I don't have a wide range of experience - I have only ever used Andrew McGill, on recommendation by many double bassists, and it cost me about £65 for a basic re-hair (I have had repairs and other jobs done) he's based in Oxfordshire. The cost reflects an excellent job and quality horse hair! The little experience I have gained, I would say don't hesitate and get a re-hair!
9. There's a wall chart about to come out from Ariane Cap... https://arisbassblog.com/music-theory-wall-chart/
10. I Use this stool https://www.thomann.de/gb/km_stehhilfe.htm , but I don't use the back rest - it is quite heavy and I have to cart it around once or twice a week, but I have tried others that are more cumbersome and don't fold down as neat and not as comfortable - I fit mine into a gig bag, which is a Gear4Music 12" Speaker bag and that can fit everything I need and more including orchestral music stand and all accessories.
11. My DB is - 8 mm, 7 mm, 6 mm, 6-5 mm, and works well for arco and pizz, but if I were to change strings to something like a Garbo, Gut or Slap I would have to raise the action.
12. I don't understand exactly what you're looking for, but is it not something you can design yourself to suit yourself? Is this to aid standard music reading or chart reading, studying, playing live? It's not something I've used or needed. It's easy for me to say because I've been studying and reading music for many years and continue to do so, but surely there are some symbols and notations that you remember and use regularly and therefore something tailor-made would be of more use anyway?
13. What a bargain for someone to get started - we (at BC) get asked lots of questions about buying DB's for beginners and you have to be prepared to wait, but this would be worth travelling for! GLWTS!
14.
Will start finding a decent bass, nothing much here in Bristol so will visit Contrabass Shope in Walton on Thames on Saturday, maybe Thawites North London, Caswells in Brackley later. Any South or SW England shop suggestions welcome. 15. I've just bought a bass off Dave - a top bloke, a pleasure to do business with and highly recommended!
16. You've done the right thing - life is too short to Um & Ah! I hope you enjoy it!
17.
I would Phil, genuinely brilliant way to spend a day, but sadly I have a workshop to run myself that day, coincidentally working on one of David's compositions.... The next one will go in my diary when I get round to it though!
He's getting well known now for his compositions: https://youtu.be/1YpRwEXXw6s
