1. Just been reading some PR puff from Stu Hamm in BGM for the LBGS about how he changes his strings during a tune as he can hear the difference when he plays......!
2. I should be free that day too. Will bring along 5 string Ibanez Artcore Semi, self- made 5 string Jazz and Minimark 802 combo. Also have a self-made EUB that I'm looking to move on. Pedant alert: funky jimbob seems to have been included twice on the list at 6 and 15? I'd be very interested in lunch, veggie please!
3. I'll pitch in but as in many of the topics here, you will get multiple answers, a trip off -topic and at least 2 people exchanging angry PM's around perceived slights.... I had a Godin acoustic once upon a time and found nylon flats sounded nice and were easy to play. They were Rotosounds I seem to recall.
4. Interesting video, Ben from Crimson came along to a Bass bash 4/5 years ago bringing a totally plexiglass Bass (including neck). He's got an interesting slant on things.
5.
No, you're thinking of Lord Lucan.
They're still looking for Lucan...
6. I thought Shergold ended up in Tesco Lasagne?
7.
Not sure if this has been on a thread before - http://www.ebay.co.u...7AAAOSwjDZYd2T3 It's truly horrible! I feel sick looking at it!
You should never leave a jazz bass in a car during the summer without the windows open a little....
8.
The Grammy's must be heading towards a massive problem. The last few years are about how black artists are not getting the recognition they deserve. The problem being, is if a black artist wins next year, will it be for the right reasons? On another note, I don't mind Adele.
I see Gregory Porter managed to sneak in for the Vocal Album Grammy.....
9. Yes, but the shop selling it have a drumkit fish tank installed by TV's 'Tanked Up'.....
10. Take some Orange gear with you, I hear it's in vogue...
11. There could be quite a few returns, I sent back a GK combo which I noticed was sold as a B stock a week or so later.
12.
Bidding is a wretched process. I haven't 'won' anything in years and prices go up to what you can buy it for new pretty much every time. I hate it. It might be alright if you're looking for toilet lids and radiators, I suppose. I'm not surprised 'buy it new' is commonplace because who wants to go through that bidding process?
Do you mean Musicman Bongoes?
13. I transferred a 30m cable from a broken reel to a new one last week. Thought I'd just check the plug whilst doing the job and the earth wire had come out of the earth pin and the screw was loose in the plug. Not sure how long it had been like that, must have been all that twirling..... Sometimes earth problems can be something very simple!
14. Solder (UK) pronounced 'solder'. Solder (USA) pronounced 'sodder'. Why?
15. Had a LMIII and a T102P and a T151P and sold the T151P as it did not get used, the T102P was plenty loud enough in a 4 piece doing soully jazzy covers in smaller venues. Think it would struggle in bigger venues, but that's when you go into the PA?
16. 'Bass' (musical instrument) pronounced 'Base'. Bass (fish) pronounced 'Bass'. Basswood pronounced 'Basswood' not 'Basewood' Welcome to pedants corner.
17.
Tempted to make an offer of £150 and put the damn thing out its misery. Could probably sell most of the parts - and there's a few structural engineers that might be able to make use of the strings in a small suspension bridge...
The neck could be used on one of the new aircraft carriers (we have no jets for)!
18. I bought a Deco HB copy from Thomann for £50. Thought it would go down well at Folk Open Mics, in the end sold it and take a full size Bass! Full price they are around double that and that would be the most I'd pay for one.....
19.
Dawsons in Alty is nice, the ones in Chester and Leeds are good too. PMT in Leeds is a bit lame for Bass, there are a few small random shops about, but you've almost as much chance finding something bargainous in the pawn/payday loan shops on the high street.
Years ( and I mean 30-40!) ago I used to work in Leeds and always made a point of going out the office at lunchtime to look around the second-hand shops. Lots of bargains to be had but at the time I had only just started working. Having looked at a Jaydee Supernatural Roadie for maybe 9 months in the shop window next to the Duchess and seen it come down in price from £500 to £400 got it for £300 and a trade in of a combo I'd won! He wasn't keen to take it out the window as he reckoned I was a tyre kicker and those windows were stuffed with gear. Also I sold a 1962 Gibson EB2 in another one for £150! Also remember trying an old Jazz Bass at £150 in a s/h shop which was very battered and possibly not genuine..that was enough money at the time (late 70's) to not risk the punt, given the lack of sites like this at the time ( or even the net)!
20. It's all a bit of a dual-edged sword. A bricks and mortar company gets it wrong, a buyer understandably then goes to Amazon to buy musical gear and eventually said bricks and mortar shop goes out of business. Local economy suffers, Amazon dodge their taxes in UK so UK economy suffers too and it becomes a viscious circle.
21.
Have had the markbass 12" combo with a markbass15"extension cab. Loud great clean sound plenty of depth and weighs nowt. Combo in one hand cab in the other and bass on back ...quick in and out.
Yeah, but where do you put the spare rolls of gaffa for the PA leads, spare strings for the guitarist, torch for the drummer ,spare leads for the guitar and kettle lead for the keyboard?
22. Having been a long term user of Mark Bass I bought a small GK 10" combo for acoustic gigs and could not get on with the overdriven gain sound at even lowish volumes the GK gave me, so sent it back. If you are after that 'crunchy' sound I suggest you stay away from the LM3 amp.....
