1.
So why make a thread about it? If I made a thread about every time I have returned something this place would read more like Money Saving Expert.
Do you know of any upcoming Sales..?
 2. I wood-glued thin pieces of the laminate (which I had to manually thin even more) into the slots where the frets were. The detail in the photo does not reflect the smooth finish: it looks a bit scruffy but it is not! Welding tip files, (really useful for widening A-D-G slots) less than £2 on eBay delivered, mini end cut pliers with the end flattened for pulling frets c £2 on eBay and sheet of Wenge laminate, c £2 on eBay also! I made a neck profile block after I removed the frets by using double sided tape on the fret board and sticking on some abrasive paper , 80 grit. With a 7" long piece of scrap wood I cross hatched in pencil across it all and ran it up and down the neck until the centre area was devoid of pencil. After I trimmed the excess laminate off the slots, I used the neck profile block to smooth the neck all over and where there was break-out in the wood, mixed glue with saw dust I saved from the neck profiling to fill in gaps. On reflection I should have maybe either tried to match the rosewood board with my laminate or gone for a starker contrast and got distinct lines, but hey ho!
 3.
That's a result yorks5stringer and reminds me I've still not bought another set of Status nylons
There's nothing like the feel of a new set of nylons...
 4. I've defretted my Prog 5 string and with nylon flats it sounds great. The stock pickups sound pretty good to me, given they are boosted by an active circuit. I spent almost as long adjusting the intonation (awkward little grub screw) on each saddle as converting the Bass. Truss rod worked well and I got the fingerboard almost flat and then wound the saddle heights down without having to do any filing of metalwork. A few strokes of a nut file dropped the strings at the other end and I can now do fairly imperfect Pino impressions. All for the cost of 1 Deco, some mini end cutters and a sheet of laminate for the fret slots.
 5. 60's Soulsters "The Boxtops" and "Ace of Base" are currently auditioning 4 Sides in order to meet more stringent postal regulations. However, Wayne Coyne of "The Flaming Lids" has a different problem and "The Four Tops" have deemed it too difficult to Tour now, as a 20 person band is too expensive.....
 6. At least 50 dead according to the BBC so perhaps a little insensitive methinks?
 7. The Chicken by Pee Wee Ellis as done by Jaco. Bflat7?
 8. [sup]Snoop Dogg and Ziggy Marley are collaborating on the new "Marley and Me 2" Soundtrack.[/sup]
 9.
like my very rare copy of Bass guitar for dummies, its worth whatever he can get for it. You can have the above mentioned for £30 btw.
I actually have "Dummies for Dummies" which is very rare.
 10.
I think you're lying....I think you're lying....I think you're lying....I think you're lying....
I'm actually in the midst of converting a Progressive 5 String to Fretless, so can't really justify two Fretless Basses...can I?
 11. I do not want a fretless Ukele Bass...... do not want a fretless Ukele Bass...... do not want a fretless Ukele Bass...... do not want a fretless Ukele Bass......
 12.
Is your drummer Paul Haydon?
You did well to spot him given I can only see an eye!
 13. In my day, a DJ was something you wore....
 14.
Sounds like you had a much better time than we did. The current mrs discreet and I went on a two-week mid-life crisis group relationship-counselling holiday in the Lake District. What a disaster! We were sent packing after I got my banjo out at the dinner table. Needless to say we won't be going back there for our holiday again next year.
Mind, Duelling Banjos always causes an adverse reaction....!
 15. I guess it depends on your technical ability as it can be a bit chicken and egg? Assuming the new nut is roughly the same size and height as what it replaces, then for strings to hold it in place when gluing it ideally needs to have some sort of slots filed. This could be just the outer two. To file slots means you need to have a file of the correct size (!) and you will probably have had to do that off the Bass initially. So you could mark the position of the strings by holding the nut in place by hand and marking the outer edges of the strings on each side, The area in between is where your slots are then filed. Or you could just copy the old nut by holding it up to the new one? Lots of tricks like using old strings to cut the slot if you don't have the right width file and if you do overdo the depth filling of the slot, fill with baking powder and super glue. Once you get onto filing in situ, make sure you don't catch the headstock or fingerboard with your file. Mask where you can. A trick many Luthiers use is minimal glue under a nut, then it comes off easily without pulling off surrounding wood and as has been intimated, string tension is a pretty successful clamp! I've got a similar job coming up but my slots are already in position, with a de-fretting of a fretted bass. Will just need to lower it but I'll be taking it off the bottom of the nut. Was going to say there are loads of things on YouTube showing how to do and not do it well. Some are pretty horrific but if you look at the comments you should be able to work out who knows what they are doing!
 16.
Some say they had a hand in 'I Shot The Sheriff', but the jury is still out on that one.
maybe "Can I get a Witness"?
 17.
I think they did a version of 'Brothers In Arms'.
and of course another Clash covered song "I fought the law"
 18. Just got the Nickels onto my Star Bass last week and have gigged them twice since then. They replaced a set of Status Nylon Flats, so understandably sound very bright and felt a bit gnarly but I soon got used to them. One use was at a Jam Evening and a well respected local Bassist I know played my Bass for a few numbers and it was nice to be at the back of the room and hear them from afar. Interestingly they went on my Star Bass with no tweaks of saddle or relief required and whilst they sound "new" and are not my preferred "dull thud", the coating feels good and seems to cut down on rattles and finger noise. Once I have a few more sessions under my fingers with these I shall update.....
 19. The Robert Cray Band and The Police are getting together for a cover of The Clash's "Bankrobber"
 20.
But he might be On The Beach. Badum-tish!
Nah, he'll be in Ohio
 21.
Happened to me recently when buying an amp was handed a bass to try it with and the bass wasn't that dissimilar from my own, but I just couldn't play, it felt very wrong. I was concentrating on listen at the amp for odd noise, so that was part of it. Adding the was a didgeridoo being blown beside me. However the time before I bought another bass it was very different to what I normally play and I thought oh no but I played it well.
Is he "out" already or was that a euphanism?
 22.
The band are moaning about it as well. It's not my beef, I was wondering what experiences other people have had. I dep with them because they are friends of mine. The band is very good, very tight with some quite interesting material that gets me playing in different styles, (although I'm sure Bernard Edwards would rather not hear his bass lines being played with a pick!!)
Agree, he'd be turning in his grave....
 23. Just stumbled across these on Woodbrass. No details on size or weight. Wonder if they are as heavy as the Behringher Ultrabass? 1000 watt head? Good prices, the 15" is £250, the 12" £209. Both were in stock yesterday, now seem to have disappeared.....
