1.
He seems o.k. to me. If customers are happy i don't see a problem.
Is it OK to pass yourself off as a "guitar builder and luthier" when you are neither? Is it OK to butcher every nut you touch? Is it OK to say you are "building wide necked 6 string guitars" when in reality you bought a 7 stringer, took out a tuner ( left a hole unplugged), rejigged the bridge ( so 2 of the 6 strings do not sit above the pole pieces) and charge £417 for the privilege, having spouted some guff about people with big hands on the farm? Without wishing to sound patronising, his customers are only happy because they do not know any better and they believe all his guff about how he sets up the instruments. The reality is it would probably be cheaper to take the wrecks he buys on Ebay to a Luthier and get them set up by a pro..at least they'd play properly. Because he takes the nuts down so far and straightens the neck, I have grave doubts that once set up so low (as a gnats chuff), there is any further adjustment. He's identified a market:usually low priced guitars and basses that he can do up coupled with a page of pseudo luthier speak that will impress the less technically aware. Nothing wrong with that if he did an honest job......
2.
who is this guy (i'm a newbie) ... the ad was amusing, he doesnt exactly sell the item very well ... lots of "quite goods" in there lol
It's well worth checking out his other ads and past ads too ( from his feedback-yes, I know I'm obsessed). He is to luthiery what Joey Barton is to the French language...
3. Looks better than some of the maestro's efforts....slight design flaw where they have sited the jack socket in front of the v/t knobs-I'd have just spun it around! Mind for £180 I'd want it perfect, and that routing mistake could have been fixed fairly easily
4. Rack Ears were always extra, they were about £17 back in the day, probably double now!
5. It was me regarding the inverter. I guess the cost of an inverter plus what I think were caravan batteries would be more than the cost of a Roland but they did mean you could get a real meaty sound, I could hear the Bass right down Camden High Street! BTW The Roland is £160 at Thomann plus 10 euros postage....
6.
Read the feedback he gets....they love him. There's obviously a market out there for these black and decker jobs. There's nowt so queer as folk.
I hope you are not being "distressophobic".....
7. I've told him where to go as he wanted to know if I was ready to send him the ££
8. Thunderbird Bridge Saddles= rockin horse poo!
9. Now the bank details he gave me need to be amended as he can't accept the money to his business account.....
10. http://www.ebay.co.u...=item3f1f622691 Wow, is that a real 1964 5 string Jazz Bass? It looks soooo authentic. "This is better than a custom shop model" Should have gone to Specsavers? Exactly what natural process have they reproduced by putting a bloody big burn slap bang in the middle of the rear body? Sex on Fire? Live in Montreaux? Is it a Fender-Burns? Did someone use the ashtray and it burnt through?
11. I'm not a Marketing Guru, but even common sense tells me you don't advertise and big up something you've ballsed up unless you want a sympathy [s]f*** [/s]sale. Likewise when he sold the neck he knackered the Truss rod on, he told everyone he messed it up. Now there's honesty and there's the delusion that all publicity is good publicity. If you are a decent Luthier you don't go around telling people how good and clever you are, you get your satisfied customers to do that. Now if you give them 1000 words of guff about how you've adjusted this and lowered that on an ebay listing are they more likely to believe you've done a good job? Especially given the price point and demographic he seems to be selling at probably rules out the more discerning and learned punter. I don't think Malcolm Tucker would be too impressed!
12. Oh, he needs to sell it today or tomorrow as there is other interest, what a surprise!
13. That Dan Erlewine is a total charlatan, everybody knows that the way to sort out a dodgy action is to carve great chunks out of the nut and install an aftermarket humbucker.......
14. Hmm. not heard back from when I said my brother was visiting Lerwick and would look over the Bass....
15. I know and there's no way I'd buy a Bass unseen for £1700 from someone who has no name and who is very vague about their whereabouts!
16. My brother who just happens to be visiting Lerwick is going to look at it......
17. He reckons he had to misrepresent where he lives in order to sell it, now! I've asked him for a postcode on Shetland so I can arrange a Courier....
18. Here's my answer: "hi again here are some pictures,if you can add 60 pounds to my asking price,i can send to UK,payment options are bank transfer so if you are interested drop me an email thanks" No response to my questions and suddenly the Bass is not in the UK! Gonna check the photos he sent too.
19.
There are so many Wals in Orkney and Shetland... the standard "location" of a Wal scammer.
Maybe it's a certain type of Bassist who drops out and goes to find him/herself in the scenic isolation of those islands....?
20.
Oh dear.....
I wrote this before the events earlier today however....!
21.
Nice to have strapped on yer Ricky Pete! Watching the Juve match tonight? I'm not looking forward to it tbh....bit worried :-(
Oh dear.....
22. I've emailed them... asking for more photos and serial number. Says they need my email address for that and that they live in Shetland! I asked why it shows them in Bournemouth! We'll see!
23. Yep, if bought from eBay it will be a genuine Fender.....as they weed out dodgy fakes with a ruthless fevour.
24. I already know (through the connection we mentioned yesterday) Phil ( who will shortly looking for a new TV job) but I'll vote anyway!
