2. Surprised one of our resident SD "tribute band" bassists has not been along yet.........!
3. Maybe they're doing what the crisp manufacturer does to the humble potato, just adding value?
4.
Nah it's still called Fibbers, but it's hard to tell because of the gay font they used.
What's a "gay font" look like? I assume you mean "gay" in the sense of frivolous......?
5. Saw them back in 1975 ish at Leeds Uni as the original band and two drummers and they were immense. Then saw the Graham Gouldman version around 5 years ago (no Lol Creme, Kevin thingy and the guitarist-Eric) and they were still good. Graham G played a Fender 6 on one song if I remember correctly....
6. Thank goodness the drummer was deemed OK, as our drummer is ex LCM......!
7.
I was not aware of that? Mayhap next year things could be sign posted in big dayglo colours, so nothing is missed (such as me missing Paul Balmer and Mo Foster, who were in some secret room hidden under the stairs Also if everyone coming in the door could be given an itinery with maybe a room and stall plan on the back, might be an idea too. Not criticising, just a thought for next time. As far as im concerned id go to one every month if there were one.
Yes, the signage could be improved and it's not a difficult thing to do.
8.
I didn't really know Judie's stuff before I started this tour, but if anyone's up for a challenge, you should try playing Sportscar. Its not that technically demanding, but the changing accents are a lot of fun; also the outro is incredible. Having only known Rhino for playing with Status Quo, I thought he wasn't really up to much as a player, but the fact is, he's AMAZING. Not only for being able to play this sort of thing, but to come up with it in the first place!?!? Jimmy Sims
He was a big Jaco fan back in the day, he was raving about him when I met him in the 80's. However I understood most of the musical genius on the album was Mike Paxman's who did most of the arrangements.
9. Just going back to the "silent room" suggestion, there was a room where you could take upright and acoustic basses to listen to above the slapathon ofthe main area.
10. Never met JT but had a chat with Paxo and Rhino from the early touring and recording band, my Mrs went to school with Pax...
11. Re Victor Bailey, I thought he was walking very uneasily and his legs seemed to look very thin under his trousers so that explains that. It didn't seem to affect his playing: let's hope he can continue to play for as long as he can. This is from his MySpace: Thanks for the kind commments about my neurological problem. However words like "sad" and "worried" were used a lot .You don't have to be sad or worry about me.I just have to move around slower, and I can't run,and sometimes I need help carrying things, but I still can do pretty much everything I used to do.The most difficult thing of all is to have to ask someone to carry my bass sometimes (up steps, things like that). That's tough!!!!But I still have as good a life as I always had.My career is very good.I live very well in a beautiful gigantic loft in Brooklyn, drive a fine car,and while I'm not rich I'm far from broke.I play music I want to play with people I want to play with.I can control my own destiny, and while I'm dealing with the new music industry like everyone else,I have enough going for myself that I'm not hoping for the phone to ring to live month to month. So other than having to move more slowly and carefully I'm ok.And most importantly what I have involves no pain.I have pain sometimes because I fall frequently, and I might twist an ankle or sprain something.but generally I have no pain.My hands might get to weak to play if I get old enough but that would be in my eighties or something if I live that long.So keep my in your prayers (chants?) but don't feel bad for me.I wish every cat could live in my shoes.I have a great and comfortable musicians life! Peace,Victor B.
12. I was on the Bass Gear Stand but 'nipped off 'to watch the Mo Foster, Stew Hamm and Victor Bailey sets, all of which I enjoyed for differing reasons. Yes, it was quieter this year, both in terms of numbers of people attending and overall sound levesl too. I think Stevie did a good job in providing a different set of artists to previous years, but he's always on a hiding to nothing due to the bassist's eclectic tastes....
13. Any Basschatters welcome, its just by the JCT roundabout....!
14. Due to work pressures our current and long serving Guitarist is leaving us in a few months. We play Soul, Jazz and Pop and are looking for someone who can handle these genres with ease. We gig 3/4 times a month with a mixture of Function and Pub work in West Yorkshire. Material ranges from Jazz Standards to Marvin Gaye, oh, and some backing vocals would be good too!. We are female vocals, guitar, bass and drums, check out our website: www.myspace.com/idlehandstrio Transport essential, Leeds-based preferable. Standard: Experienced Contact via website or PM on here please!
15.
Oh, it was Phil Coliins was it. I thought it was a Ross kemp standing in a hole. Who was his bass player? I liked the look of his 6 string bass.
That was Dave Swift of the Jools Holland Orchestra: hence my comment about the fanned frets.....!
16. You could watch the Tues/Weds version for 30 minutes then! PS Dave Swift looks like he's got some fanned frets
17. Can I be the first to say this new series is crap/brilliant/OK? Phil Collins singing Stevie Wonder? You may as well as got the drummer to sing it....
18. It's the old maxim: if it seems too good to be true, it usually is!
19.
I used to use TE gear, and I spent forever faffing on with the 11 band EQ.... The Hartke just sounds good. Plain and simple! It's very difficult if not impossible to find a setting on it that isn't useful and musical. It could maybe use a bit more boost in the mid-range - but I guess that also depends on your bass/cabinet arrangement... Through my Ashdown MAG410s it sounds a bit mid-shy, but through the BF Compact it just SHOUTS in the mids!! It may be bigger and heavier than MarkBass, Genz Benz and other such bonsai amps - but its far lighter than what I was used to! I haven't noticed the "hissiness" either - but I guess it depends on how and when you use it and what you are used to. For the price (I paid £180 second hand) you just can't go wrong. Oh, and it's bloody loud too! Can't comment on the Orange as i've never used one - but it's a lot more money isn't it?
I had one as a backup and I'd wholeheartedly concur with Conan on everything he's said!
20. I've been practising slapping all this year so I could go on to some of the stands and give a good account of myself: now I find out it's banned! How f88ckin unfair is that? Relax, just joking, expect I'll go- with earplugs in my top pocket.
21.
Tell you what I'm tired with is a lot of the contributions to this thread recently. BGM is a mag that has to cater for a wide range of players and genres. You can't please all of the people all of the time, as someone once said. If you are that unhappy with it do as some have done and go else where and stop whinging. I think they do a pretty good job. I don't read it from cover to cover but I can usually find enough to satisfy me. There have been a lot of complaints about type setting and typos in the mag. Well quite frankly some of the contributers to this thread should check their own posts first before they criticise others. Rant over.
I bet you put "Clover" on your butties as well....!
22. Just looked through my latest copy, got to agree, nothing that grabs me even though there is Bootsy and Stanley Clarke. Just wondering if the format of a monthly magazine is now negated by forums such as these? Would BGM be more valued, readable and relevant if Basschat and other forums didn't exist? TBH now I just get it for the Competitions, years ago with the old Bassist Magazine I won a Crate Bass Combo and later a Laney Bass Combo too!
23. Diane Birch: Bible Belt, what a voice and check out the players in the band, like George Porter Jr. She's also on Live at Daryls House with Daryl Hall, well worth watching.
24. Met him when JT toured back in the late 70's as my wife knows Mike Paxman.. had a long chat about Jaco
