1.
I sat and watched Standing In The Shadows Of Motown with our drummer a month or so ago, and we immediately both thought of putting a band together just to do that. I'd absolutely love it.
Hi Pete Our singer is going by the summer and we have an Aretha soundalike lined up, so watch this space.....!
2. "Therefore I wanna start my own band, doing more Stevie W, Motown, Stax, Funk, a higher class of rock, and a higher grade of venue." I wonder how many bassists on here are thinking, I'd like to do exactly that too? I would!
3. Not trying to be clever but isn't that where a harmonic is? If you don't want them then don't play them, it could be due to the new strings and you not being used to the neck as well. You could also try muting with your other l/h fingers too....
4. What a gig, Norman was spot on and man, he sweats buckets. I watched the sweat start from the first number, by the end his jacket was soaked through and his trousers down to almost his knees. he needs to try that Lynx stuff! I'm not convinced he was playing through the TE stack as I could not see any cone movement at all.......? Other interesting facts: I first saw John Turnbull on guitar with Bell and Arc in Newcastle City Hall in the very early 70's. Last night he was playing a £200 Peavey guitar...just goes to show! Here's a couple of photos from my phone of NWR with his Bass Collection Jazz as described in the new rather glossy (controversial?) BGM! P.S. Grabbed the setlist at the end, how sad!
5. "How did you shape the contour where the upper horn meets the neck? I was trying to picture it (before you posted the pic of the back) and I just couldn't imagine it" With great difficulty: it looks good from the front and back but when you look directly down it goes off at an angle. When I decided to do the conversion I spoke to a couple of luthiers who both said "Dont do it" as the angles are all wrong on the donor bass. Also I shaped quite a lot of the body before glueing it on: big mistake, as the contours flowed better once you have it as a whole. A lot of the shape was just my imagintion and "following the wood": many a time I've gone back and just shaped it a bit more. If you compare the earlier photos to what I have now you can see the difference..... Oh and thanks for all the feedback folks, its nice to know people are appreciating what I'm doing. Re the control cavity: my router bit was too long so had to shim the template, which slipped at one stage( always double side tape both surfaces!!) but all in all quite pleased with the result. I had to use some wood filler in places and you can see where I'm touching in tiny holes prior to final sanding. 6. I joined the SD forum, posted this issue and within a minute someone came on and recommended a US guitar shop who sold SD pickups. I emailed them and within 30 minutes had a response and they contacted SD. Another email later yesterday was confirming SD will supply them and all I need to do is pay the postage. Result! Doesn't say a lot for going to SD direct mind......
7. "and don't forget that with Thomann you can sent it back if you get a turkey. " Speak to JS and help UK guitar builders PS. Not sure you'd want to wait till Christmas......... I'll get me coat
8.
Guess this is a dumb question but do any of the majors (EMG, Bartolini, S. Duncan etc) make a circuit that has 2 dual concentric pots in a VOL/BLEND stack and a 2 band EQ stack in one circuit ?????
Funny you should mention that.....because I think this is how mine has been modded! http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=46380
9.
SD replyed to me today after over a week about a broken pickup. I had even purchased a replacement, now to be emailed back at last saying they'll get a warranty replacement to me! doh. so wait a little longer. i have a feeling that maybe like 2 people work there!
I've sent them another message to the email address on the circuit diagrams page, given I'll need to sell a kidney to buy the specialist pots that only SD seems to use it may be worth me waiting a bit longer for a reply!
10. I'm impressed, I emailed SD 3 weeks ago and have heard back zilch......
11. I bought the above second hand and it appears to have been modded. Here's a photo showing 2 concentric push pulls with no blend control here's a link to the schematic from Seymour Duncan http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/wirin...ic=2b_t_circuit Does anyone please know where I can get a 10k master volume push/pull, a 100k blend control and a 100k concentric bass treble? I've done some internet searching and these do not seem common values for these pots. I emailed SD but apparently they never reply...! Thanks
12. Jon Shuker uses Poly on his basses, I sprayed mine with it.
13. I'm going down the Henry Ford route or maybe a dark blue or green.....
14. Done quite a bit of body shaping and the pickups have been routed out. Bottom body yet to be thinned down : am waiting to do the control cavity and see how much wood that takes up. Due to the amount of wood filler this will be a coloured finish......
15. You know what they say about cleaning valuable antiques.....
16. All my Tribbies were the other way round: your ears are fine!
17. Are we really sure Jeff Berlin isn't German...?
18. "its like a mini streamline! " but not unfortunately made of graphite. I've actually thinned down the top body wing considerably since the photo and will be doing the same to the bottom too.
19. Well, here are some photos of some lumps of mahogany: it's hard to believe they are both from the same piece! I've rubbed them down with 80, then 120 grade, wetted the wood and used 120 again. next is on to finer grades still!
20. I remember going to my prospective parents in law and saying "we have something to tell you and it's to do with Little Feat".LOL We were going to Manchester to see them , also the Doobies? and Montrose were on too. Warners brought 6 bands over and mixed and matched the lineups: never forget that Tower of Power were on the other lineup.....
21. Saw them last year in Holmfirth and met most of them prior to the gig: unfortunately they don't do a lot of the classic material and persist with "Don't Bogarde that Joint" which I found just plain lame. I wonder when Lowell George will rejoin them.....? Having seen the original band twice in the 70's, I'm going to stick with my memories even though this line up is still better than most bands out there today!
22. Looks like you may have taken a shine to it? I had a Shine Telebass that was well put together and passed the Ronseal test ( did what it said on the tin) but you see loads of their 5 and 6 stringers on ebay and they don't seem to keep their value. If you bought new at £275 I guess as long you did not expect to get the money back when you sell on then it looks cool and presumably sounds OK. Epiphone do as similar one based(!) on the EB2 and I think Italia do something simliar as well. P.S. Don't expect a hi-fi tone! P.P.S. Get back to work!
23. ND are better than the current SD (IMHO): here's their gigs for this year, I'll be going to the New Roscoe again! http://www.nearlydan.co.uk/gigs.htm
