There are a few factors at work here. The exchange rate is making US strings more expensive but once upon a time music shops sold loads of strings cos it was the only place you got them. Now they only sell strings in desperation and dont get the bulk discounts they used to get. So its a vicious circle of selling fewer strings for more money. At least Roto's and the Status strings I use (assuming UK made) should not be affected.
Only if the steel they use is GB produced and Corus (who are Anglo-Dutch) have just announced loads of job losses...
In a word Yes ! Its not the cost that is the issue really. If you look after the kit it will give you years of use and be much easier and nicer to use with more consistent results. The main advantage is that you can thin out your finishing coats with say 20% paint and 80% thinners as this gives much smoother results as the thiners will "melt" the previous coat. Unlike spray cans though it takes a lot more looking after and you will need lots of thiners (buy it by the gallon / 5 liters) to keep the gun and nozzle clean. You can have custom colors mixed which is a bonus and if you prefer not to use nitro there are some good acrylic paints. You also need stuff like disposable filters to strain the paint and not forgetting a really good breathing mask. The main problem with spraying is where you do it and you will need a dedicated "clean" area. Cutting down on dust will save you hours of T-cutting later. As long as the delivery CFM is a good 30% higher than the gun capacity you should not have any problems. Bass bodies don't have a large surface compared to say a car so you don't need a huge compressor and the one in the ad looks just the ticket. They are also handy for spraying emulsion when you are decorating I used to restore and customize cars as a hobby so if you need any pointers just ask.
Cheers, that's brilliant info: if you make the Yorkshire BB we'll need to have a long chat.......!

A little bit of advice please? Thinking of doing a bit of spraying some necks and bodies some time in the future. What type of compressor and gun do people use? Or should I just buy aerosols: at what point does it becaome cheaper to use the proper gear? Does the compressor and gun need to have a minimum "delivery" for quality work? Would something like this do the job? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/S-I-P-HOBBYAIR-210-C...A1%7C240%3A1318 Thanks!

I could be totally wrong about this but I recall many moons ago at the Bradford Festival one lunchtime seeing the Deidre Cartwright Band, which was an all female ensemble. What stuck in my mind was not that she was playing a Parker Fly but the Bassist was playing a WAL. Can anyone back me up on this?

Whilst not wanting to spoil anyone's anticipation(!), am I alone in thinking it it was a load of name-dropping-and-went -out- and- got- either- pissed/stoned/or-both load of waffle? To be honest I could not wait to finish it and pass it on, and I'm not pissed off because he actually promised me an autographed copy which never materialised! He decided to leave out all the "bassy" info to the appendix so it just became a load of mostly dull but occasionally mildly interesting anecdotes about people he got pissed/stoned with. Maybe I expected too much and am genuinely greatful for the opportunity to read it but I just found it quite boring(IMHO). Or maybe I lead a much more interesting life than him? -
Whilst I take your general point , I think there has been some positive stuff as well around "adding value" and offering lessons/rehearsal space in addition to straight sales side. I'm sure the OP is intelligent enough to not base (!) his business plan solely on the feedback of 70 or so very odd cyberbassists ( this correspondant included)!

Hi Phil I'll keep the ball rolling with a donation of a Coldheat which is an ideal thing to have in your toolbox at a gig as it is cordless and has a light on the end too.(it's a cordless soldering "iron") I'll also be bringing another 10 along that I've managed to source at a very good price, £6.99 each! -
We played our regular gig at the Old Tramshed in Saltaire last night. I was a bit nervous about contacting them on the day to confirm our attendance in case they had stopped bands but not only were they pleased to hear from us, they gave us another gig in April too! The Idle Hands Trio however is no more as we have been rehearsing with one of those guys who has loads of equipment, takes ages to set up and hits everything all at once..yes, a drummer. However he bought a cross trainer at Christmas,( should have got a friendly one!) and did his shoulder in, so we invited along a sax playing friend of Dan the guitarist, who then brought along a flugelhorn player friend of his: The Hull Horns as I named them. No charts, some songs with programmed beats but it was real blast as the guys took solos and played harmonies too. Having been used to voice, guitar and bass this was quite different. On "Dreams" by FMac I sing some BV's, got quite a shock when I heard myself harmonising with myself, looked across to see the flugelhorn player singing the other harmony! I knew I was not that good! There were some nice solos in Fly me to the Moon and Moondance (themed songs) but we dropped Blue Moon as too maudling. We even got a couple up dancing and sold a CD, which for a Thursday night in Saltaire is almost unheard of! The second gig with the Hartke LH500 ( my LMII has now reached France for repair, took a week): I can get a nice warm sound but not the clarity of the Markbass. Next gig is a friends 60th, hope to have the drummer back, better learn Happy Birthday again!

Hohner Professional Steinberger Copy Bass
yorks5stringer replied to yorks5stringer's topic in Repairs and Technical
I own a B2Av. That's the 5 stringer. As Ray says, keep the hardware, as it's of a fundamentally good design. You may be able to find a replacement screw at a local fastenings supplier - Just take the original along (plus any parts that attach to it to make sure the thread's right) and match it up. Doesn't matter if it's too long, you can cut it down with a Junior hacksaw, and "open out" any deformed threads with a thread file. Fastening suppliers are excellent. I've sourced Imperial allen keys for a Fender Jazz, found the right hardware to hang a telly on the wall, repaired damaged parts on pushbikes, you name it. And all for a few pence. Back to the Hohner- I'd retain all of it, even the body, until you've finished your build- it may provide some helpful measurements. The neck not least! Definitley save the EQ. It may still work also. Hope this helps. Any more Q's? Ask away!
Hi Lfalex Mine would appear to be a B2 as there are no switches for active and no names on the pickups. I'd already thought the tuner thread is sortable from a engineering type supplier and I'll certainly keep all the bits anyway. My first thoughts were about saving the neck, making a new body( using the old one as a template) and turning it into a bolt-on neck via recessed screws. Unfortunately the split/break does not run parallel to the neck so I could not just make it a neck through and attach new wings. I think the previous owner decided to smash it up as the pickups don't work so I have some investigations to do, also the pickup surrounds are cracked but if the pickups are goosed anyway maybe I replace the lot. Are spares readily available from Hohner? I see I'll need to source double ball-end strings! I'll do some pics at the w/e Cheers Keith -
Fender Stratocaster USA Mint Condition

£15-20 but it's the insurance that adds £££ to it. -
Have you wound your pole pieces down as I recall when I had one some people found the output too hot and I guess it will be hotter on the lower strings? As you say it might be the East retro, have you spoken to them ? Also have you asked the question on the US Talkbass G&L site as there is quite a bit of knowledge there too?
I had a minor problem with mine when I used a new speaker cable. It had unbranded speakon connectors which weren't making good enough contact in the speaker output that accepts both speakon and jack leads - if I wiggled it about the sound would come on and off. There was nothing wrong with the speaker cable other than the fact that it wasn't well suited to that type of socket (it worked fine in regular speakon sockets). I was lucky in that I had used the amp without any problems for a while, so I could identify the cause easily. It would be worth trying some different speaker cables before sending it away for repairs.
I had a similar issue too with mine but wouldn't that have been obvious to the OP as the sound would be cutting in and out? I was thinking more around wrong impedance=overheating amp=thermal cut-out. There's a long thread on that US basschat thingy about it, goes on about 35 pages or so.....!

Hi I've just acquired a split body ( yes, the body is split in half lengthways) Hohner Pro Steinberger Copy with aluminium flight case. The pickups don't work and the surrounds are cracked, one of the threads on the tuners is stripped so does not work and the body is split in two. If anyone is an expert on these I'd love to talk to you to see if parts are available or whether it becaomes a donor for my first solo build project....? Looking at the tuner threads, the actual screw comes out the knurled knob so should be easily replaceable. I may post some photos at the weekend!
