Wunjo's Bass centre - Great service and NBD!
Shockwave replied to Shockwave's topic in General Discussion
Clear guard anyone? Might get Bass doc to make one. Rout is not perfect but still wont show much! Just ordered a kiOgon Alpha Mini electronics harness, 2 250k V and 1 500k T as well as a full brass sheilding kit! -
Decently made Wiring Harnesses, Are they worth it?
Shockwave replied to Shockwave's topic in Repairs and Technical
I reckon 500k would make things interesting I do like a brighter tone overall. I would rather the convenience of a pre made harness. My time is worth more then the money. I am well aware that a basses sound is a sum of its parts, the improvements will be done in phases. Is it worth to pay out extra for CTS over Alpha or Artec? -

Hello all. I have a cheapy Chinese Squier Affinity which I love. Obviously the components are cheapest of cheap. At the moment I am not looking to replace the pickups until something fairly cheap but decent come up. Until then, is there a noticable benefit if I go for a decent pre-wired wiring harness such as the one from KiOgon? What benefits do I gain from them? Also, looking to emulate some of Tim Commerfords Rage Against the Machine Jazz tone. Should I be going for 250k or 500k? What cap? Etc. This is all new to me. R -
Looks great. Super colour. What did you use to condition the fretboard?
Ernie Ball Wonderwipe fretboard conditioner. I was given some free ones at the London Bass Guitar show. The rosewood comes up a treat! -
Hey guys. Just to give a shout out to the guys at Wunjo's today. Many a time I would browse their excellent selection in the knowledge that I rarely buy new instruments, today being an exception. I generally dislike shopping in stores as I am very aware of my lack of skill and can get a bit shirty at times to the wrong type of sales person. These guys however have always had a friendly wave and word for me when I come by even if I haven’t ever bought anything from them. They didn't put me under any pressure and left me to my devices which is the way I prefer it! Recently I have sold all of my basses to get myself out of debt (Which I am now definitely out of). I had a potential £1000 burning a hole in my pocket, but wanted to not spend so much if I could help it. What caught my eye in the shop today was a Fender Modern Player Jazz 4 string in 2 tone burst and an Ibanez ATK 800, I raised an eyebrow and was told I can try anything I like. I thanked them and decided to come back later when things had calmed down. An hour later I was strapped in through a reasonable Fender Rumble with thank god an overdrive feature! As usual I turn myself right down as I tend to think bassists in shops are generally far too loud. Fender Modern Jazz, DARK sounding. Much darker then I would have thought, the bass was medium to heavy weight and felt a bit ungainly. I usually love gloss necks, but didn’t get on with this one. A real pity because I love the two tone sunburst satin finish. Ibanez ATK 800. Very low action, maybe a tad too ambitious of a setup for the bass, Neck was nice and thick, frets felt a bit sharp. Unfortunately it couldn’t quite cop an Economy Stingray tone I was hoping it would do. Now in-between plugging in those basses I spotted a Squier Affinity Jazz bass in lovely Burgundy mist. I love this colour and I have had cheap basses which have been pretty good in the past. Had a price tag of £195. Thought I would have a go and see how things have come recently in the low end Squier market, knowing how brilliant a CV Jazz are. My word, the sound was much brighter than the other two basses, the neck, whilst slim and usually not my thing, was very fast, the action was pretty good, frets were perfect, no sharp edges. Tuners held tune even after moderate string bending, nut was cut perfectly. Neck pocket is TIGHT. Alright the bridge is a bit naff but works perfectly. What struck me most was how LIGHT the bass was. The body is thinner on the Squier Affinity series and you can definitely tell on the old back department, having just gotten rid of a Gibson Grabber which was also lightweight, this really caught my attention. Tried it again after the ATK and I was sold. Lightweight, great colour, played better than the other basses I tried, sounded more my style with minimal tweaking, fit and finish is second to none. I took her home, as usually I didn’t try to haggle, if I felt I needed to haggle when I would not have been 100% sold on the bass and I wouldn’t have bought it. Came with a gig bag and a 2 year setup and warranty with Wunjos. The bass really satisfies my Rage against the Machine itch. When I got her home I took the strings off, conditioned the fretboard, polished her up and set about lowering the action. The neck was perfectly straight so I lowered the bridge saddles and set intonation. THE BASS ACTION IS 2MM at the 20th fret and DOES NOT FRET OUT. Seriously this thing is a freak of nature! I have never owned a bass that goes to this low of an action! This rivals Ped's Vigier Passion 2 with a Carbon graphite neck. At the shop one of the guys asked me whether I was going to modify it, I was fully considering a Maple neck at some point and tuners, but really I think I'll keep her as it is! Likely I will change the electrics and pickups. Maybe the bridge though considering how amazingly it plays I might withhold on that. Going through my VT bass Deluxe and cheapy PC speakers, this thing growls! Cheap pickups which make it sound a bit undefined but still! So, I am mega happy I challenge anyone’s VM or CV bass up against this little Affinity. Heck most Fenders as well. As well all know, these threads are useless without photos... (Still soaking in the lemon oil) So it has been a good day and this will keep me in great stead until my customs show up! I felt bad for the guys at Wunjo that I chose the cheapest thing I tried! Rob.

Drummer wanted for Stoner Rock band. (London)
Nice bass tone there on Oubliette! Is that just a P-Bass with the grind provided by the MiBass, or is there a bit of VT in there too?
Gibson Grabber (Pup slid to neck position) > Vt Deluxe bass > Power section of a Trace amp > Old Hi-Watt 2x15. A mixture of DI and Mic. It was a live demo at a regular practice room. I am also the vocalist -
Hello all. My band are looking for a new drummer to replace an outgoing one. We have a decent demo available for any potential candidates. We practice in central London 2-4 times a month on a weekend. We have 5 fully written and fleshed out songs with 3 more to work on before gigging. We have had some limited radio play with our demo. Looking for someone with dynamics, able to keep time and with good ideas. Backing vocals a plus. https://soundcloud.com/chinspinner/oubliette Contact me for further details.

An open letter to Custom builders. (Update on Page 11)
Shockwave replied to Shockwave's topic in General Discussion
Pickups were eventually delivered. Though I couldn't be arsed with the 7 string fret less in the end considering how long I waited. Now into month 16/17 waiting for my Lettsbass. Very annoyed that many other orders are being put ahead of mine. -
I haven't got any scales at hand... I would say its an average weight compared to a Fender bass, which would be lightweight for a Guild. C shape neck slimmer then a precision but thicker then a jazz. Nut is P bass style. Similar to a Gibson Mahogany tone but less wooly due to the single coils. Great overdriven sound when giving the amp gain a boost.
Stunning, I still miss mine! Tempting.
I will miss this when it's gone. Paying off my debt is more of a concern though. Selling this will make me way in the clear for the first time in 11 years! I have now updated the trade lists to include Stingrays.
What about a mini-toggle switch mounted 'vertically' (i.e. up/down in the playing position), you'd be less likely to hit that mid gig? I've just fitted a custom U-Retro (active blend and same contour as J-Retro) to my Perception. The U Retro five knob comes with a passive tone which is in both the active and passive tone paths. I am amazed by how useful this is even when in active mode. It allows you to open up the sound a little more or darken it down with a twist of only one knob. I'm not sure if that's available on the ACG circuit but it might be worth considering?
The passive tone is available as I have the 4 knob version. However the hole we are filling is too big for any normal Pot. Only thing big enough is a 3 way switch. Hence the idea for Dimarzio Super Switch.
-
Shouldn't be a problem finding a suitable 3-way switch most rotary switches have a setting that lets you alter how many ways they go. I have 4-way switches on both my active Gus basses and on the Reverend Rumblefish.
Different idea. How about using a Dimarzio Super switch, which is a rugged and shorter switch but still uses the 11mm hole already drilled. Coil tap two positions and leave the middle one as normal, then send the two separate pickup signals to the pre-amp? Leaving the two way to be a kill switch still. I cant use a pot in that hole because the hole is too big.
-
Yup, it is looking great! As for the two other controls behind the bridge. Initially I was thinking a 2 way kill switch and a 3 way toggle control. The middle position allowing the blend on the ACG to work. However I was thinking maybe a 2 way switch active/passive with the 3 way selector as the passive circuit. However then I would need another volume control. So at the moment I am unsure. If I went for a three way selector switch for use on the ACG circuit, I would be worried about hitting the switch from the middle position mid performance. So might be worth fitting a rotary switch instead but I cannot find a 3 way rotary switch anywhere. Maybe go for a 5 way instead? Anyone have any suggestions what I can use those controls behind the bridge for?

New photos! First dye has gone on, to accentuate the flame. Final colour will be a darkisk burst effect.
