Yep. Yep, I thought had no GAS, but mentally I seem to draw a distinction between "shop-bought guitar GAS" and "build your own guitar GAS." First of all, just a quick question: have they confirmed that it's a 34" scale? Only, I've got the Epiphone SG bass in a 34" scale, and that has a 22-fret neck, and I notice this is only 20. (But then I know there's only 20 on your average P-bass, so I could be worryingly unduly.) Have they actually routed for the 3-point bridge, or just drilled the holes? Again, I'm comparing to the Epiphone, but the bridge and tailpiece seem to be screwed straight into the top on mine, so you might be able to swap in a different bridge and...erm...cover up the holes. To be fair, the 3-point is a bit of a nuisance, but it's workable. Just be careful when you're changing strings as the moving parts have a tendency to fall out! As for finish...I bet that maple top would look absolutely stunning if you French Polished it. Does require a lot of time and patience, though.
I was not sure about the scale length either, but I emailed them and confirmed that yes it is 34" scale. The Gibson EB4L is long scale but only has 20 frets. 3 point bridge is already routed for. Biggest worry right now is gluing the neck on straight!
Well if the top's as nice as the one on the advert, then yeah, some sort of light stain or wash would look great! Oh dear. I really want one for myself now! Truckstop
I agree, it is a bit interesting to see a set neck SG kit doing the rounds!

Hey guys. Just purchased one of these to while away the Christmas period which I will be mostly alone for. http://cgi.ebay.co.u...em=171149283159 Annoyingly I was told after i bought the kit that the bridge was actually a 3 point one, which I didn't really want, but never mind! The rout for the 3 point bridge has already been done, I will be tuning this bass drop C when finished so I need to try and make sure I have enough travel on the bridge to intonate the C correctly. Is there anything I can do with the nut to help this if I run into problems? What say you guys about a finish? Could keep it natural, but I am very tempted by using some sort of wash/trans colour. Could go with Green! What recommendations would you guys give me regarding techniques and glue for the set neck part of the build? R.

After dangling a carrot in front of David at SGD he has actually shipped a package to me! So who knows I might get my pickups after all. Just had to apply the right pressure and incentive. -
Would be good to have a listen. It's a great genre for getting some bass fills in - though I've always stopped short of doing an out-and-out solo!
If I had a decent recording that was not through a camera maybe! We do have a live demo up with a couple of nice bass fills. Shows that the bass really can cut through when the rest of the band go along with it. They love my tone and kept asking for my bass to be boosted in the mix. https://soundcloud.c...inner/oubliette https://soundcloud.c...ner/stereobeard However, when I first joined the band I stated that I need precense on any recording we do as I have suffered for years at the hands of bands that completely mixed me out. They agreed readily, I am also the only vocalist, lyricist and primary songwriter (As much as thats worth!) So I think I have more say then most bassists in band. To get a decent mix bass wise the whole band has to work towards it as it's very easy to get buried. I guess I lucked in on these guys, though we have trouble keeping drummers!
Rob, Aaron Armstrong here in the UK MAKES Ken Smith's pickups. He could have supplied something similar for your needs for about 90-110 quid a unit. I've got one set that has been slightly tweaked for my self build and plan on ordering another.
Thanks Kiwi. The 7 string pups are actually replacing Kent Armstrongs! Either way, I just cant afford that kind of money for a while. -
Did you ever get the other problems sorted out, Letts basses ? I never liked the way that guy used to pop up posting about how fender basses were rubbish and his luthiery was was so superior.
I have had recent comms with him and he is getting the bass finished. No ETA at the moment.
I may have missed some detail in this but what happened to have you fork up the full amount before completion? I have only recently got into custom stuff and every time it's been a case of pay a deposit and then the rest upon completion, and I've actually seen a picture of my item before I have paid the rest off.
A number of times David had accepted a custom set of pups with just a small deposit and they were never paid in full. Due to the many bespoke designs he does he lost a lot of money. Or at least that's how the story goes. -

Hey guys. Warmoth lightweight maple body finished in Antigua burst with matching scratchplate. Fender Lic. Mightymite maple/maple neck. Hipshot ultralite tuners. Dimarzio Willpower and Dimarzio Ultra J bridge pups. Gotoh 201 Bridge. I had our very own Mr_Foxen put her together. He did a very good job of it and in decent time too! Far better then the mexican reissue, more of a faithful antigua reproduction then what Fender managed in the recent FSR models. Basically I wanted the antigua look, but a very balls to the wall trebley sound, and its exactly what I got! It has growl in spades. Emulates the Strike Anywhere/Rise Against tone. It has a very low action. Slight ding on the scratchplate. £500 pickup in London. Will trade or part exchange with cash either way. Interested in Stingrays.
Ah ok gotcha, 2 seperate sets makes sense for that money. Balls, I'm assuming not as an unsecured creditor, but any noise that you'll see any money back? Si
Very difficult, he has not declared himself as insolvent officially, he does not respond to Emails and he is in the states. I imagine a lot of people are still hoping on receiving something from him. Plus I doubt there is much a bank could liquidize and make any money back on. I cannot afford to buy any other pickups, so I have to make a proper go of selling my cab to raise the cash. So I'll be without a cab for a long time likely, I am not the richest of folk and these custom builds are the result of much scrimping and saving. As for the 7 string that was being modified, I guess that is just going to be in limbo for the foreseeable future. -
Sorry to hear that buddy I'm sure I missed this detail early on, but what prompted you to spend £290 on some pickups? Were they custom from the ground up? Si
Exact Gibson RD clones for my Gibson RD clone custom build and 7 string Ken Smith clones for my 7 string. 4 pickups total, price including shipping. -

I have just been informed by a third party that SGD pickups are now insolvent, the owner refuses to admit it and no longer responds to Emails. So I am now out $470 and I do not have the money to purchase suitable pickups and they wouldn't be the RD clones that I wanted. Right now my custom bass will just not be finished. (I am accepting part exchanges on my Barefaced cab to raise the cash though ) I and many other people were constantly lied to by David who told us to trust him even though he broke his word many times. Well this is the ultimate proof and I am ultimately the one to pay the price, I just feel really dejected. -
I have been popping in randomly since I moved to London last year. They recognize me every time I walk by after band practice and always say hello. As soon as I find something that catches my eye in the shop I will be purchasing! (Not saying they have bad stock, it's very good, but I am fussy!) Lovely people.
