Oh wow! How heavy is this one?
11.5lbs according to my terrible bathroom scales! Pretty light for an RD. Lighter then my all maple P bass anyway! I have also included the link to the sale page on Andy Baxters site where this exact bass sold for £2295! http://www.andybaxterbass.com/details.php?id=225

Yeah yeah I know, I have only just got this back from the workshop, but I have decided that I want to finally get something custom made for me and me alone! Up for sale or trade is a Gibson RD Artist bass. Made on the November 12th 1977 I bought it and got it up and running to gigging spec through Martin at the Bass Gallery.

All maple build, maple body, maple neck and fingerboard.
FULLY working Moog electronics system.
Switchable bright mode, treble and bass boost, compression and expansion.
Completely refretted a few days ago with accurate stainless steel frets.
Hipshot Supertone bridge, which gives maximum adjustability and tone. (Original bridge is included and the mod is completely reversible with no screw holes showing)
Dunlop straplocks.
Truss rod is 100% grade A fine. Currently setup with a low/medium action and can easily achieve a drop down to the floor action.
Original hardcase!
11.5lbs according to my terrible bathroom scales!
Has had a rebuild in the past couple of weeks detailed below. http://basschat.co.u...artist-refresh/ Overall the condition is very very good. some light dings and scratches here and there. The fingerboard was completely refinished before being refretted so there is no wear on it at all! (Unlike many other Gibsons from the 70s). This is an absoloute classic in everyway folks. The absoloute dream for every stoner/doom, rock and metal player out there. This very bass cost £2295 from Andy Baxters not so long ago. http://www.andybaxte...ails.php?id=225 I am offering it to you for £1750 FIRM. Which includes the Hipshot supertone bridge (And the original), the refret and refinished fingerboard. It is pricey to anyones wallet, but you wont find a better playing and giggable RD out there for the same money! I am also offering a free £40 Minatour handmade strap, extra wide so that neck dive drastically cut back! I am up for Part exchanges and trades as well. Looking for some modern 5/6 strings, Musicmans, maybe some more 70's/80's oddball stuff. I am pretty flexible on trades so hit me up! Pickup ONLY. I cannot trust this bass to any shipping company unless the buyer arranges a courier and assumes full responsibility.

Anyone got a Newtone strings? Need help!
Shockwave replied to Shockwave's topic in Accessories and Misc
Heya mate! So does the winding continue at full thickness as it winds around the post? Or does it stop just short of it? I cant remember if your bass was String thru body or not! I have emailed them. R. -
Wondered if some of you can do me a favour! Just had a senior moment and ordered a set of Newtone standard Diamond bass strings without checking how long the low E string goes until it starts unwinding at the nut end. Bought these with the intention of going on my Gibson RD but considering it is thru body stringing and 34 1/2" scale I am unsure if they will get to the nut before the windings start unravelling. If anyone could check that would be awesome! (Hoping it is around 95-96CM on the low E) Otherwise I may just have to topload the string. Cheers! Rob.

Quiet low E. Maybe get a balanced set?
Shockwave replied to Shockwave's topic in Accessories and Misc
No! -
Hello guys. I have a bass that is going to be played in standard and occasionally change to drop D. However I have an issue! Whenever I play in standard tuning the low E is pretty quiet, and slack. Lacking definition and low end that the A and D strings have and overpower the E. I have changed the pickup height and string spacing to combat this but has not worked. So I guess I would need a more balanced tension set? Thing is I assumed that the lower tension on the E string would mean a louder string, or am I thinking about it the wrong way? Weird thing is I don't have this problem on my other basses? So maybe something like .106 .079 .059 .043 gauge would be more beneficial. What do you think? I am very fussy with even string volume and I just would like the problem licked! Gauge of the Elixirs I am using is 105-85-65-45. Cheers! R
Awesome, in the late 70s I wanted one of these, however a new Fender P was way cheaper (and affordable as a student lol). It is for me one of the greatest shaped basses ever. Can I ask the burning question before I think about building my own replica. What is the balance like, any neck diving?
Yup there is neck dive, however I won a really nice strap in the BC raffle which negates much of the effect! I dont have to hold it up on purpose anymore!

Hey guys. A while back I bought a Gibson RD Artist. Lovely bass, but unlike the description said, the frets were really worn down and there was some little bits of wear on the fretboard (Much like my grabber had before I sorted that out! http://basschat.co.u...__fromsearch__1) Anyway. I took it to the Gallery in Camden, Its been refretted with Stainless steel frets, the fingerboard has been lightly sanded and refinished, Hipshot Supertone bridge fitted, Dunlop Straplocks and a nice set of extra long scale elixirs. Well here she is! Shes been brought back to an excellent condition. The Hipshot really adds to the tone of the instrument and adjustability. The frets are PERFECT, stainless steel. All work done courtesy of Martin and Co' at the gallery, though I dont think he likes working with stainless steel that much! (Apparantly it was the first time it was ever requested!) I have sunk £1705 into buying and getting this instrument ready for gigging now, been bloody expensive Apart from a couple of dings in the finish its near mint! Whats more the bridge mod is completely reversible.
I thought that I read somewhere that there was a sliding pickup version of this ripper bass?? I was hoping that they used a common body, so this version may have had the route Pity I have come across a one in natural for sale, that would have been ideal. Thanks again for the info
Nope. There has been no sliding pickup Epiphone. There was a Gibson grabber II which was a reissue, but pretty expensive and set neck. -
Hi skater Dan, can I ask what the pick up routing on these basses looks like? Could you please take a photos for me. Reason. I am looking for a replacement body for an old Gibson Grabber bass that I am trying to restore, and I think that maybe this type of bass could make a suitable doner. Its got the same body shape, just need to know if the pu cavity can accomodate the grabbers sliding pick up. Thanks in advance for the help.
You would have to rout out the body to accept the Grabber pup. -
Hi guys. I would like to form a Stoner/Noise/Doom/Post rock band with like minded musicians. Main influences include Young Widows, Red Fang, Shellac, Russian Circles, Om. I have decent gear and would like to jam out some ideas with a drummer and guitarist. The only requirement being that you are not over "Flashy" and are aware of the need for sonic space and that every instrument is as important as the other. (Ultra loud shred guitarists take note!) To get an idea of what I am looking for please view this! Large beards are a plus as I don't have one. Vocal ability is a giant plus. Practice is likely in Sutton/Surrey or Central London. Let me know if your interested! R
Damn, always been tempted to add the neck pickup in with my already installed middle Willpower...Such POWAH! But I have no idea how to rout for it, nor how to wire...As well as perhaps being interested just because, I'm now also wondering what else I can put a willpower middle into...Because these shot up in cost since I bought them and £90 for the set!? 8-O
Get someone else to do it! Either way, I have decided to withdraw the middle one. Cant be bothered to find a replacement for it! The neck one is there for the taking at only £40! R
Keep it, just recorded mine today and dropped the E to a low D - these basses are so good, the engineer couldn't believe how punchy it sounded. PS the cat in the picture is the ringer of mine!
I do love the sound of mine. Though my P-J does a decent impression of it, quite similar basses tbh. My cat is polydactyl and throws up water all the time. (I keep him away from all of my gear!)

Well looks like I'll be getting a S12T soon! The Compact is for sale to fund it though... I'll miss it!

Hey guys. May be making an order with Alex to get a Barefaced S12T or Big twin so the Compact has to go. I have a Barefaced Compact in good condition with silver grill/cloth with the lighter ply. This has barely been used. I will take a part exchange for my Compact + Cash, for your Barefaced 12T, X2 Midgets or Big Twin ONLY. I may take a deposit of say £100 to reserve it and will hold the cab for 2 weeks. £450 FIRM, No haggling. Collection only from Sutton, London. R.
-
Looks like I'll be likely selling the compact outright for £450 as I am talking to Alex about a 12T. However I sort of need the Compact until the 12T is ready so not sure how it is going to work at the moment. I might be willing to part with it if someone can pick up from Sutton London. Register your interest, I may take a deposit of say £100 to reserve it.

Hey guys. May be making an order with Alex to get a Barefaced S12T or Big twin. But before I do that, just need to see if anyone is looking to downsize from their S12T or Big twin? I have a Barefaced Compact in good condition with silver grill/cloth with the lighter ply available plus cash. I value the Barefaced at £450 cash value or £400 trade value. (Though I am not selling the compact at this time, I may do in the future) R.
