I am expecting my new SD quarter pounders tomorrow and i have noticed hoppus has switched round the pups in his new model to make the E and A more punchy and the D and G strings more prominent. Is this a load of codswallop and will it make any difference, as if it does before i install mine i may consider telling the tech to do this. Also what is the process for doing this?

In our set i play a tiny amount of slap in only one song actually. It's not a technique i like to over cook and a lot of our songs don't require it that we do. But on one song i do some basic slap, but my question is, as i play a cheap nasty p=bass copy the slap sounds good with new strings but crap with old strings. Just ordered some Seymour Duncan SPB-3 Quarterpounders, are these pups slap sound friendly as i am concerned my slap work in this song may sound crap with these pups. Any opinions welcome.
Are you currently connecting both outputs on the head to both sockets on the 4x10 cab? I think that shouldn't be necessary. S.P.
Yes i am, it doesn't work though unless i do this. -

Yes i agree, i am toying with just getting a 1x15 to crank it up to 4 ohms and get 200 watts live. But i am thinking maybe if i get a more powerfull head then start changing things around is the best and least annoying option. Wouldn't want to get a new cab then still not being happy with the power output and clarity. I hear good things about GK so i may roll with these. Whats the deal with adding a 1x15 do they have a volume control on them, how would i connect it to my 4x10? My 4x10 has 2 cable inputs on the back which are already used to go into the back of my head? -

Cheers for all your opinions, i am considering gett a GK rb 700ii head, and maybe get a 1x15 cab too. I would like a min of 300 watts on stage really. I am currently looking at a Aguilar 1x15 300 watts & 8 ohms cab at the moment. -
I play in a covers band, we do pubs, weddings, and like last night big marquee gigs. I have had the same rig since i was 15 and bought blindly and have never felt the need to change since understanding impedance, coming on here and playing bigger venues. I am after some advice on what i should do to alter my rig to get more power and better colourful tone. So the rig details are: Head: Peavey Sessionabass (130w @ 8ohm, 200w @ 4 ohms) Cab: Laney 4x10 speaker (240w @ 8ohm) I now understand that that i have been doing these gigs only using 130 watts of power which is scary. I can add pics of my rig is if it helps but any advice on gear to buy and should i change the cab or the amp itself first will be appreciated. I will even consider adding a 1x15 maybe to a rig, i just want a good beefy colourful tone. Budget wise i will look to pay around £500 for the lot obviously looking for second hand gear, and i am only interested in solidstate amps. Thanx all.
Yeah, the basswork on Hot Fuss was really moving. "Glamourous Indie Rock and Roll" is the one to see him stretching out on. But even on Sam's Town, I find that the basslines are moving and doing things with great subtlety...there are small nuances and things going on there that the average rock bassist is not doing... I really like Hot Fuss, I LOVE Sam's Town and Sawdust is a belter too (especially Leave The Bourbon on the Shelf), but Day and Age is utter crap. Even "Spaceman" isn't that good! You'll notice that previously he was playing Geddy Lee jazz basses though Day and Age was recorded with a P bass...and the bass tone is crap. Quiet, wooly, flabby but lacking the body his previous tone had. The grind is just gone and even in the dull, dreary songs, the bass just doesn't stand out. Coming from someone who makes a habit of learning Killers albums front to back, Day and Age is a massive letdown on so many levels and I've barely started work on transcribing it.
I agree the bass tone on Day and Age is crap. But on the jonathan Ross show when they played 'Human' he used a Geddy Lee and the tone really made a difference to the song imo. It was like having his old tone implemented into the new material.

Does anyone have a audio clip of this pick-up? I can't find one on youtube and i would love to hear what they can do after hearing so many good things.
-
I agree with a lot of the above, his basslines make the first album and his tone is great. I watched them perform 4 songs on the Jonathan Ross show recently it's on youtube if you want to hear it, and his tone on 'Are we Human' is fantastic. He looks awkward when he plays but still sounds great.

Worrying, well i need these pick-ups for some upcoming big gigs. They have charged me already and still nothing yet, they better refund me if it dpesn't arrive by Wednesday.

Anyone used these before, just i am waiting on some pick-ups and on their site they say they are in-stock. But i phones them and he said they are now out of stock. Got me a little concerned, anyone have a view on them?
The quarter pounders swap some top end detail for added punch. They have plenty of bottom end. I'd echo what the others have said: you'll never know whether they are right for you until you fit them.
Well i have always been sick of my muddy quiet pick-ups in the mix so i guess these will solve that. Our set does comprise on some pop punk covers etc, but as i have bought these now i may aswell try them out. But i am a finger player so will that make the sound a bit more vintage. Also in the set when it come to the Beatles, James Brown etc songs what should i do to get the best tone suited for these songs? -
Are they the 1/4 pounders? I have them in my Pbass, I can get a fair range of sounds out of them, although predominatley rock, punk or metal. I think its because they cater the higher pitches quite well. It depends alot on your amp aswell though.
Yes they are the 1/4 pounders spb-3. Do they sound too thin in the mix though, i mean do they have much bottom end? Just have a suspicion that they are not versatile enough for me, but youtube and these internal laptop speakers don't show muich bottom end on many basses. -
I have a p-bass copy and the sound is dull. Just purchased some seymour duncan spb-3 pick-ups for it. Thing is after hearing some sound clips it sound too punky. I play ina diverse cover band for e.g.g the beatles, james brown and coldplay. I am worried are these pick-ups the wrong choice for me?

I have an old Fender P-Bass copy, it's got Vintage on the headstock only set me back £120 10 years ago. I am used to it and don't want to gig live with anything else. I want to upgrade the pick-ups instead of buying a new bass and i have decided to install a seymour duncan quarterpounder SBP3 (i think thats correct). The question is how much do you think this will cost for a shop to fit them, i can buy the Pups for £50ish. Is this a good idea?

Hi all i am upgrading my current half stack rig for a more louder option for bigger gigs and better sound. I currently have a peavey sessionbass head and a laney 4x10 cab. Anyhow i am buying blind without trying but i am considering aGK 1001 RB 11 head and a Hartke XL 4x10 with aluminium cones. I play in a cover band from beatles to michael jackson and was wondering what tone i could anticipate from this rig and will it be suitable for this type of music? ATB Ben

After a few months of not being inspired by anything new on bass out there i decided to learn Englishman in New York by Sting which has a cracking jazz bass section in the middle. Learning this has got me wanting to play more jazz bassline so does anyone have any suggestions for me?
-
Interesting as my guitarist recently purchased a Gibson guitar from PMT for £1600 and they charged him £30 for the straplocks aswell. He also said the bass section wasn't impressive.
