1.
Some great answers here so I'm sure my 2c will pail into insignificance by comparison. Firstly I bought a starting double bass DVD and took on board all the advice (£12 well spent), secondly little and often practice, thirdly get a powerball and finally get a lesson or two. I'm still stuck on 4 and I must pull my finger out. I've gone from not being able to do a whole song to doing 4 gigs this year on it.
May I ask which book and dvd you got? Im in a position at the mo where I could just afford one or two lessons but the nature of my work means my working hours are all over the place so lessons arent really ideal just yet
2. they sound fine. Im a big fan of the little peavey amps as well. Nice and small but loud enough to play in certain band arrangements. Ive seen them on here for 35-50 quid. Not often I reccomend behringer but I quite like their small wedge bass amps which are cheap as chips as well. (I'll probably get flamed for reccomending them but hey, its got a cd input, graphic eq etc.)
3.
Another Blazer, here's my '81.
I absolutely love the shape of the headstock! Would love one of these but alas I cant justify it
4. I visualise notes as colours, but I can't actually see the colours. Instruments have colours also, havent done it for a while but when I used to map out tracks when recording onto a computer, each instrument track had a designated colour that had to be my way. If it was different, I'd swear it would sound wrong. I never mention this to people as it just makes me look mad. (probably explains why Ive never owned a bass or a guitar that isnt red or sunburst.) With drum rhythms I can draw the patterns on paper as well, couldnt tell you what the time signature is but I can draw a scrawly picture of it!
5. there's a nice looking 64 rivoli for sale on ebay at the mo. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Epiphone-Rivoli-bass...3DLVI%26ps%3D54 It may be worth seeing how much that goes for and price accordingly. Get some pics up and I'm sure there'd be some interest here! (I'd love one but I have a feeling the price may be out of my reach)
6. Whenever I have to get filming kit together for overseas shoots I always make sure we have peli cases as they are light and virtually indestructable. I vaguely remember ped saying one of the peli rifle cases would fit a bass.
7. Mine was borrowed for about a year from a band mate. twas a BC rich bass in cream (looked like duffs from GNR) and a laney dp 150 bass combo. hated the bass as I wasn't fond of anything with pointy headstocks and I didnt understand the concept of action or playability on a bass. Managed to afford my own bass the following year which is still my number 1, good ole mex jazz bass. Wasnt too fond of the combo either which I did buy as it was too big as a combo with 4x10 speakers and the controls had too many switches and dials that I didnt have a clue what to do with. sold it on finally about 2 years ago for 50 quid. EDIT- oh yeah my current rig is yet another laney combo, got rid of my swr rig as it wasnt being used and the laney is on loan to a friend until I need it
8. I'd say listen to the bass playing on abbey road, some of that was pretty heavy. Ive often thought Macca could complement Josh Hommes grooves.
9. Picked this bass up last night. Had some great fun with it but then had to pack it up and leave it at my friends house as Im about to move house and havent got the room just yet Fingers crossed this bass will lead on to great things and inspire me to get playing out there again
10. Yup I'm happy to throw a few sheckles into the pot! Its often the case that I'm working very odd and often changing hours (the wonders of TV!) so when you get a date pencilled I'm hoping I can come along
11. Absolutely love EB2s or the epiphone equivalent for that matter. one day, one day...
12. I vaguely remember reading an article that some band like 'scouting for girls 'or 'the feeling' (one of those record company created bands) met Phil Lynnot's mum and she let them play his bass. So, I'd say his mothers got it
13. Im in the process of buying a DB at the mo and if its in Bristol I'd be quite interested in coming along as its not too far from cardiff
14. Im a fan of the guys playing as well. When I heard the album for the first time I thought maybe a ricky or fender mustang. When I saw them on tv for the first time I thought he was playing an ibanez jet king- similar styling but alas I dont think its a hollow body. couldnt really comment on the sound of that bass though.
15. A mate of mine might be interested in this- would you say its got more of a jazz bass neck?
16. really enjoyed that. cheers for the link!
17. Less online interacting and more practicing. (ie facebook- not really basschat as there's plenty of tips and tricks on here to inspire me) Im getting a double bass in the coming weeks so maybe some sort of music-practice thing. Ive never really got to grips with a practice schedule. Actually complete a recording- lots of sketches but nothing framed! lose a load of pounds so as to get gig fit and have to worry about things like buckle rash (hasnt been a problem since I grew a few bellies)
18. just a suggestion but maybe stick a black pick or different pick guard on it, I was never happy with the colour on mine until I changed that.
19. all gone. head and cab went for 175 each
20. they had a couple of these in denmark street last time i was there- the shop that's selling that old p bass as owned by sid vicious and the bar that plays 50s music downstairs
21. cheers for all the advice. I went to see it today and had a bit of a noodle. It's the first time Ive ever played one and really enjoyed it. I'd say its all laminate as it wasn't really really loud although that may have been something to do with my technique! the guy who is selling it bought it in april for £450 new so there isn't a mark on it. He's giving me the bow as well although I didnt really look at it. He's selling it as he's off to japan for a year or two. the colour is a bit red/gaudy looking so I'm hoping this is something that may age a bit? Im thinking it'll be ideal to start with and if I catch the bug or it doesn't work out I cant see me losing any money on it.
22. cheers jake for the reply. He paid around 450 for it new plus the cost of the soft case. I think the pick up was around 150 to 200. Im going to see it so will find out exactly what it is and maybe take a few pics. I figured for that price it should be worth a punt providing its all okay. Just clicked on your sig myspace site. Yamit Mamo- helluva voice. We've filmed a bit with her in work on doctor who confidential
23. hey guys, a friend has offered to sell me a double bass for £250 in a soft case plus a pickup for £100. I havent seen it yet so will be having a look in the next few days. all I know about it is that its chinese. Are there any issues I should look out for, the fact that its chinese?I guess most low priced instruments made these days are chinese but it still makes me a little worried. Ive been reading some of the other threads here mentioning the sound post and checking to see if there are any splits but is there anything else that can be a concern?
24. Im intrigued to know what they are like as well. Ive seen the baritone jaguars around which look quite similar but havent had a chance to play one. saw one of these on ebay the other day. A tribute to Jack Bruce's VI http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TPP-JACK-BRUCE-Cream...=item4cec7c71f5
25. use the old finger method but then also use my index finger and thumb together as pick when needed if that makes sense. this used to cause havoc with my nails when I was gigging all the time.
