Indeed, some have become iconic recordings in their own right e.g Hendrix's version of All along the watchtower, Santana's Black Magic Woman, Elvis's Bridge Over Troubled Waters, Van Halens You Really Got Me, Deep Purples Hush.
Covering the better, but less well known cover versions can be great for covers bands. Most of the punters have never heardthe covers, so they think its your own, better than the original version. Best thing about a lot of tribute acts is their names. Many are good, like Dizzy Lizzy for example, but some are dire, just doing poor covers with no real 'Act' to speak of. Its as much about entertainment as playing a set of covers all by the same band isnt it ?.

Only really skimmed the thread ( forgot me glasses ) But surprised nobody has mentioned Jim Lea... -
Coke works on chrome, but soak it in vinegar for 1/2 an hour then rinse it and lightly clean it up with a wet brillo pad. Works better for me.

Tried that, but what I haven't tried is adding some soap, might try some 'soft soap' if you can still get it - used to come in jars and stank orrible. Isnt fairy liquid detergent, not soap ? It smells as strong, so hopefully ordinary household ammonia isnt greatly diluted from the old cloudy stuff. Dont seem to be able to get a few of the things I used to, local pharmacy wont sell even meths now. Say they dont have a license to.

From way back when I started work, I have always made up a cleaning spray with about a cupful of Cloudy Ammonia and half a teaspoon of fairy liquid, in a spray bottle. Takes your breath away but cleans of nicotine , grease etc and leaves stuff like Tolex and polished wood grease free, it all literally just drips off. Doesnt work with ordinary ammonia, has to be the cloudy stuff, just used up my last bottle, and I cant find it in shops anymore. So, whats the difference between the two, and where can I get the cloudy ?
That reminds me of when I lived in a bedsit. The couple living in the room nextdoor knocked on my door, very excited to show me something... I got in there and there's porn on the telly... Turns out they were picking it up from the telly of the weird bloke who lived downstairs. I know that things that receive can often become low power repeat transmitters but I'd never seen it happen like that from a video player.
He was probably using a Rabbit.

Depends what you want, but with just one guitar you usually do need more aggressive Bass lines to make it work, think Who/Jam/Cream/Slade/Feelgoods etc. No point being a shrinking violet and trying to hide behind one guitar.

PAT Testing. Why pay a certified professional?
BILL POSTERS replied to coffee_king's topic in Repairs and Technical
If something breaks or gets damaged, that needs a repair and not maintenance. If a valve goes, I'd need to replace it, but there's no maintenance I can do to make it last longer. I'd like to maintain my amp but can't think of anything to actually do!
The usual thing these days seems to be to generate as much pointless paperwork as possible. PAT Test, Certificate, log it, file it forget it. Then log the PAT Testers calibration certificates, etc etc. Not so much with PAT testing, but with most maintenance work, paperwork/Admin takes as long as the job, sometimes longer. -
OK, it does depend on the genre, or on the sound you want if your not doing 'just like the rcords' covers. But it does depend to a large extent on the Bass Player. Some Bass Players styles are better suited to a one guitar band than others. I much prefer 1 Guitar line ups myself.

Grounding and earthing issues. Old American amplifiers can have the white or neutral side of the mains plug wired across the amplifier chassis, dually functioning as the ground or earth. This is not usually a problem with modern wiring codes in either country, but older American amplifiers have two-prong plugs that are not necessarily polarized for what we call the "hot" (black mains wiring) and "neutral" (white mains wiring), and they can be reversed, sending the voltage to the chassis making a touch-shock hazard. Modern amplifer plugs have a three prong plug, which the third plug is green for direct to earth and is usually bolted by a lug onto the chassis, so if anything happens internally to the amplifier, it is earthed or grounded directly. I have an older Fender Bassman Export head of the same model that Macca used on the Beatles Apple Corp. Saville Row rooftop concert, which I have had to have the mains rewired for a modern three prong plug to address this issue. Unfortunaltely, in spite of safety, the three-prong scheme does cause its own problems with audio equipment with possible ground or earth loops that can induce hum and noise. But it is a small price to pay for the added safety of the third prong direct to earth. Here in the USA, I have a rack mounted tuner that I use a three-to-two prong adaptor on its plug so that ground or earth loop noise is eliminated. It is not a hazard, because it is eventually grounded to the chassis anyway through the daisy chain between the instrument and the amplifier. Now, all the above is compounded by the UK scheme which is just as complicated, if not more so. Worse, the colours of the wires are different, so a do-it-yourself-er cannot simply rewire point-to-point. Even if there is a universal mains transformer in the amplifier, as with many Marshall amplifiers, including my 1975 2203, so that all that needs to be done is change the primary mains tap, the correct colours and configuration of the mains wiring must be attended to with the proper plug wiring to make it work. And it must be "Good British plugs" at that. Some newer amplifiers, like my Carvin MB12, have automatic voltage sensing input circuitry, so it is not the issue it used to be, but on older amplifiers, it can mean the difference between working properly and electrocuting something or someone. I don't necessarily like Wiki, but it can provide a good starting point for more in-depth discussion and resource links, so with that in mind, compare USA wiring: http://en.wikipedia....n_North_America to UK wiring: http://en.wikipedia...._United_Kingdom Because, we must have "Up, Up Up!" with the voltage, with "Good British Plugs," because Algernon: "It's green there in America." [but] Macca: "In some places, it's brown, you know...."
Not all transformers are the same. If you use an autotransformer, it could be an issue. But if you used an isolating transformer, then neither side of the output is connected to the raw mains. So its much safer and just a bit more expensive. Something like these. But if you shop around you will find much cheaper. I don't understand the physics of bad leads
BILL POSTERS replied to alyctes's topic in General Discussion
Is it a silent jack? The silent end goes at the instrument end to silence the sound when you change instruments. Otherwise it'll be because the electrons flow better when the lead is always used in the same direction. They wear a path through the copper. Or something. I could have made all that up though;)
No, Its true... -

Sometimes with cheap, loose cable or even old cable, as you shake it the outer braid moves, this varies the capacitance, and the cable acts a bit like a condensor mic. If you have ever tried using ordinary co ax for audio, you'll know what I mean. There are, or were a few years ago, alarm detectors which worked on the same principle, with a loosely screened cable either clipped to a metal fence, or sometimes buried in gravel or under turf. With an analyser, which in some brands included a speaker. Quite effective, you could hear quite well with them. Once or twice over the years. Good going really - who looks at the Bass player ? Ofter the first gig I ever did, new years eve at a workie club in Gornal in the black country, I heard a little girl say "Ay Mom, thats our telly man" Real rock n roll moment that !
Just tried it with 1m and 5m OBBM leads. Zero perceptible difference in signal quality. I would suggest that there's something wrong with the less good sounding lead that you have.
This... Tried it with several identical new ones of different lengths up to 10m, sounds the same. Not recently, but I have also looked the the signal with a scope in the past, couldnt really see a difference, although I could only look at one at a time, so it doesnt mean much tbh.

Anyone ever used PA full range top as an extension cab?

If I understand you right, its electrically the same thing as that terminal n the bridge vol is at ground anyway. I take it its working, sowhy worry ? Rule No.1 in my book. If it aint broke, dont fix it.

Either of the above. Or Epoxy Resin. Araldite if you have money to throw around, or pound shop stuff is good, push it into the gap as much as you can, then heat it up, hot as you dare with a hairdryer. It gets runny when you heat it up but will fill gaps when its thick. Might not need the screws that way.
