Something not right there. Is it just a 3500 head, or a combo ? and did the tech have you spekers as well? As has been said, drivers, bias cct etc usuall fail along with the O/P transistors, O/P transitors are 3 pairs wired in parralell with a 3500 iirc, so could be that not all of them are switching on. Dont try and use it, Either take it back to him or find a competent tech. Just wondering whether you have a shorted lead or speaker, although the amps protection cct should sense it if you have.

I cant understand why sinister people dont just work it out the other Gary Flecher style. ie, turn the Bass over, but dont change the strings over. Most people, at least back in the 70s when i learned, worked it out for themselves anyway I think. You would certainly have more choice when looking for a Bass wouldnt you ? I did play with a guitarist who did that for a short while, was hard trying to work out what open chords he was playing at first.

I know nowt about upright basses. Quick question if its not too obvious, do leftys string them the other way around ?

Sequel to The commitments 'The Guts' will be out in September. Sould be good.

"Being an unempleyed musician is much better than being an unemployed pipefitter" Anybody read the sort of a sequel. The Deportees.?
Fancy old stock ECC82 are pretty easy to come b y cheaper than new ones.
Agreed. four old Brimars on ebay as we speak, doubt if theyll break anybodys bank.
Yeah that's true I picked up some JJ's for a tenner a pop, not so bad!
Sounds a bit expensive to me tbh. But at those sort of prices it aint worth spending too long shopping around is it ?
-
At least theyre cheap and plentifull . There always seem to be ex TV guys selling ECC82s on ebay.
A certain Mr. Hendrix seemed to manage OK playing right handers upside down, didn't he? I'm just wondering if this one is a very old P bass which has been messed about, that's all.
I think there is, or was a Hendrix tribute act roumd Brum where the guy plays a lefty strat upside down. Takes all sorts I spose.
I remember the patterns from a self remembered "root" note, i.e chorus may start on A so from E string 5th fret I`d remember the pattern of following notes until another " landmark" . I know this sounds a bit... odd....but I remember numbers and patterns better than the letters of the notes....!!!! Each to their own!!!!
Like this. Just the shapes and patterns. I dont really think about what the notes are. Then stick it on a disc and play it in the car ( I drive a lot for work) which sticks the arrangement in my head.

Its a Tele isnt it ? Never really noticed it before. Too busy watching Imelda Quirke.

I put the Kent Armstrong 10K vintage pups on my Precision bitza. And I've been well chuffed with the authentic old growly precision sound. I have 2 Precisions (one 92 MIM and one 2011 MIA) and have had various others over the last 20 years, all with stock pups, to me at least, this one is the best sounding of the lot.

grub screws (bridge) question - can i stiffen them up
BILL POSTERS replied to tedmanzie's topic in Repairs and Technical
Warm candle wax, just a little bit on the thread. Works well with iron dust cores and suchlike. Makes them feel firmer to turn but wont go hard. Or a mate of mine used to use araldite resin for the same thing, just the resin mind, no hardener. but its probably too messy for what you want to do. -
I smoke, play a P in a tribute band, and drive a Vectra SRi with tinted windows and my own No. plate. Can I join pls ?
I have been looking for chokes on Motherboards, but they aint that High of a value, i think i have old PSU for a PC I do tend to use them as Power Supplies, 3.3v 5v and 12.. Hooked a ATX connector to a Light Switch to turn it on and some Banana Connectors for the Power supply, I think i got Ground 12+ 12- and 5.5- and 5.5+
Seen it done to power CCTV cameras One point though, add a fuse at least in the +5 & +12 outputs. Theres a lot of current available, enough to set fire to thinner or longer wires. Seen that done as well.
`mm you got a good suggestion there The other thing i could do is have two Single Coil Pick ups and Link them in PAR (there normally 2H so drops down to 1H) but you way will be more perment and better test.. ill have ago, think if i dress up as a fuffy bunny and look cute might give me one just to NAFF off!!
Tell em your designing audio kit, no harm in asking, who dares wins as Dell says.
90% sure a passive three band tone stack is going to be too lossy to use in a guitar without some active gain added somewhere.

90% sure a passive three band tone stack is going to be too lossy to use in a guitar without some active gain added somewhere.
You could well be right, top bottom and mid cut - whats left ? The value of the choke aint going to be all that critical, I'dbe inclined to try winding my own, or looking in old TVs and PC PSU's for something that would work and experimenting a bit., have a play with the values of the cap and R2
-
Why not see if you can blag a free sample from somewhere ? I have done it with ICs in the past so its worth a try surely. Nowt to lose. somewhere like http://www.wilcocorp.com/catalog/search.cfm
If you think about it, speaker polarity reversal in the context of the bass guitar/pickup stringed instrument is more or less equivalent to either changing the magnet poarity in the pickups, or plucking the string identically but in the other direction (up-down as opposed to down-up).
If it was that simple, the cone would exactly follow the string, which it doesnt. and all basses and all amps would sound the same.
-
That'll because you're also hearing the contribution of the voice coil cap from the front, which is where the high end comes from.
More likely the shape of the cone I'd have thought. Effectively a differnt shape from the front ?
-
Very likely. It was a long time ago, I cant remember the theory behind why it makes a difference, and as I said, its not worth arguing or losing sleep over it. Just always done it the right way myself without questioning it. An open backed combo certainly sounds different from the back though, which is the same principle.
I'm sorry, I did not mean to sound offensive at all. By context I meant that although polarity matters not one single bit for a single speaker by itself, it may be important to take into account *if* it's likely to be used as a part of a multiple speaker system. That's the kind of context I meant, the context in which a speaker was going to be used. A practice combo is not typically used with an extension cab, and the OP's amp is not fitted with an extension speaker connector unless he added one himself. If he added one himself, then as long as he used the same polarity it does not matter which way around he wires the speakers. A single speaker does not care about the polarity. If you saw it "demonstrated" then it would be more useful if you explain to us how it was demonstrated, because its rather odd... I really don't mean to offend you But what you were saying was incorrect (at least in the way you said it, that's why "context" may be relevant). Please don't take it personally. Just trying to correct misinformation, that's all, without making personal judgement calls.
OK, no worries. Funny how this has stuck in my mind, I would have only been 16 at the time. an apprentice on the RTEB/City and Guilds 48 or 224 course. most of which if forgot as soon as started to actually do the job. Demo was pretty simple really, it was after all one of the first lectures. Started out with a speaker, audio osc, turntable, amp etc. demonstrated the upper frequency limit of hearing. played a test record. had a switch which reversed the speaker - yeah, I know, not a great idea, but this was 1969 - there was a definite difference, although you probably wouldnt notice it if you had to wait while the speaker was disconnected and re connected. And no, it was not stereo, Stereo demo came later.
-
Absolutely. That's why I was making the point about missing the "context" earlier, when I replied to BP.
tbh, thats a bit offensive. I didnt misunderstand, nor miss the context. It was even demonstrated. For some reason that particular lecture stuck in my mind while most of the course was forgotten years ago.

Of the ones I've read, probably enjoyed Chas Hodges and Noddy Holders the most. Followed by bits of Ray Davies Xray, which is a bit weird. Even enjoyed Joe Browns, he was my first guitar hero when I was likkle. Not sure how much of Keefs and Ozzies I really believe, and the Pete Townsend one is so bloody pretentious I had to read it a bit at a time so as not to just give up altogethr, Smashing guitars is a poncey bleedin art form... ? Gercha.
