No offence intended in any way, but "You're" means "you are" and "Your" means something which belongs to you. "You're a bass player and you play your bass."
Its my lack of educatiun that does it. I learnt to tell my teachers to f*** off at an very early age.
I've not bought anything, in person, from a shop in ages. Mainly because I rarely buy anything brand new and most retail outlets have such poor used stock. Before Musical Exchanges became Sound Control then Reverb then nothing, they had a good selection of used basses, amps and cabs tucked away in alcoves downstairs. It was a treasure trove of good quality pre-owned loveliness. Once Gary sold out to Sound Control it all went down the pan.
Yep, was good when it was called Modern Exchanges in Broad St as well. So where are all the good second hand gear shops ? cant all be on ebay, and it aint in any of the crack converters I've been in.

Has to be a friendly face and a good atmosphere. First guitar shop I ever went in, when I knew nowt, the guy treated me like I was wasting his time and one of his customers - a fairly well known, but unpretentious guitarist as it turned out - told me what I needed. I never went back there and still feel uncomfortable in music shops even now - nearly 40 years later. Todays 17 year old buying a set of cheap strings, could spend a lot of money and reccomend you, or not, over the next 30 or 40 years, p.s. the shop was Wasp, for any other old fogies on here.

If you drive a car, your a driver, ride a pushbike, your a cyclist. play Bass - actually play it - your a Bass Player. There are good ones, and great ones, and not very good ones, but no bad ones, who's to judge whats good or bad ? I'm a Bass Player. I only really play Bass. I been a Bass Player since I joined my first gigging band a hundred years ago..I also only play R&B or Rock n Roll these days. Never bothered with 5 strings, slapping or anything flash. Wouldnt make me a better oneif I did, It would just make me a different one. I dislike the terms Bassist, or Bass Guitarist.
I'm having enough heartache with bands/auditions myself at the minute. I guess she's going to have to deal with it eventually anyway. I'd be glad for her to be in a high school band though, I learned too late to join mine.
Same here, except for when i was at school music lesson were little more than comunity singing, and the teacher told me not to bother, reckoned I was tone deaf for some reason. High school bands are great for kids, except for violins. 6 kids scrathing away on out of tune violins at school shows just has to be the worst sound in the world. Dont let my previous post put you off, was a great feeling when I first saw my daughter gigging, worth it in the long run.

Beware. As she grows up you not only get the usual boyfriend tears, you get the heartbreaks that go with band hassles as well. Trust me,
Wow, had to google him to remind myself who he was! Of course, one of my school days heroes! No idea why I liked Mott so much, still not that keen on the music, but I used to love it when they came on ToTP etc. Goodness, Overend Watts, takes me back!
You didnt see the BBC4 documentary about MTH then ? Worth a look, still on sky catchup or iPlayer or whatever its called. He came from Birmingham as well, which, in itself makes him a Bass Hero surely...
-
Anybody mentioned Overend Watts yet ? Anyone with the bottle to go on dressed like that has to be good, its not All about technique is it ? Showmanship has to be taken into account surely.

Back then Fane made some good speakers, but also some real budget ones. The budget ones, popular for DIY cab builders, were plenty tough and stood a fair bit of abuse. I liked em.

Not a great quality photo, but the one on the right may be an early 70s Viking.
I used to hate that. Theres always some wag who has a comment, or shouts " Give us a tune then " -
The worst thing is the large number of w@nkers you get to meet. Having said that, I was thinking the other day of how I've met nearly all my friends though music in one way or another.
This. The w***ers, bullsh*tt*rs and people who are too far up their own arses. -

Wilkinsons batteries seem like good for the money. Seem to last well in kids toys anyway, and at least they have a sell by date soyou know theyre not really old stock past their shelf life.

dyou really mean gold plated ones are not better..
That's sort of my point. People tend to judge the quality of a brand irrespective of whether stuff is actually made on the same factory production line. AFAIK, TDK used to make a very high proportion of all the mag tape in the world. Samsung used to make a very high proportion of all the 'glass' for LCD screens and TVs. Etc, etc. A battery is pretty much a battery (chemistry differences aside, of course). Why would Kodak go to a lot of trouble to set up a separate production line in order to badge a cheap inferior one?
You order from China, you send em the logo and they print whatever you want on the item and on the carton. Of course, I have not checked to see if theyre actually made in China, but you get the point. You might just as well buy the cheapest Chinese ones you can find. As for videotapes, TDK was OK, maybe they made different grades, cos back in another life, when I used to repair VCRs for a living, cheap tapes like Kodak ones really were terrible, both the tape quality and the cassette housing really were rubbish sometimes
-
Does Kodak actually manufacture batteries though? Or Sony, or Panasonic? Funny thing, branding.
Aside from batteries. Sony and Pana do make good quality consumer eletronics, amd so have a name and reputation to protect. Their battery operated small items and accessories are decent quality. afaik Kodak make budget printers, and used to distribute cheap nasty re branded crap VHS tapes.

Old type zink chloride PP3 batteries wouldnt supply much current, but high capacity re chargeables, even alkaline batteries will. Short out an old PP3 and not much happens, short out a 400 mA rechargable and at best theres smoke. So if you use them in equipment thats not protected, and get a short in the wiring or fault on the PCB, the results could be narsty. Just a thought.

Course, if you have a vintage bass and want to keep it period, theres always these. http://www.ebay.com/itm/DANELECTRO-VINTAGE-POWER-SOURCE-PP3-Zinc-Pedal-Battery-/150956494074?pt=UK_Guitar_Accessories&hash=item2325b54cfa or this, a snip at £35 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-SEALED-Flying-Bomb-Battery-9V-9-Volt-/160980844526?nma=true&si=MltZaCBGoMPaEfM2ai3wUeqrIzs%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557
I bought 2 packs of 20 for £3 each from a cheapo shop in town. They are zinc. Non have leaked and I get 3 months out of each one. With 2 basses needn't worry for at least another 4 years or so Never seen them since.. Sometime then cheap purchases are the ones that makes you smile.
Zinc Carbon batteries have a limited shelf life, after which they tend to go manky and even leaky. They should be OK otherwise. I cant see any reason why you would need high current rechargeables, or even alkaline batteries. How much current does an active Bass draw ??

Learning other instruments to complement bass?
BILL POSTERS replied to mingsta's topic in General Discussion
A bit of guitar helps me, so I can recognise what the guitarist is doing, and by thinkig in shapes, can work out what will fit in chords etc. But thats just for me, and my way of doing it, which some people find strange tbh. I have no doubt that piano is a big big help with theory and with ear training, So in the long run, a bit of guitar and as much piano as you can stand.
