1.
It was 1974. The skies were dark with pterodactyls. Fire had yet to be invented. I bought a 15-watt 'Audition' guitar amp from Woolworth's and played 'bass' through it by tuning my guitar down an octave. You can imagine how it sounded. This is how we entertained ourselves before the internet was invented. That and shadow puppets.
Oh wow, Audition, used to repair them for Woolies. yep, must be one of the worst.
2.
Wow, a lot of hate for stuff on here. Maybe it was all broken! I know Carlsbro are about as fashionable as Noel Edmonds, but the ones I've used in rehearsal dives etc I could always get a good solid if basic tone out of. Also Ashdown have a hell of an artist roster, so they must be doing something right, no? Not heard too many people comment on important factors such as reliability, value for money and sufficient volume for the wattage - are people mistaking 'not to my taste' as 'bad'?
I had a grey coloured 150W Carlsbro 4X10 combo for a while and I tought it was pretty good. I think most people who knock Carlsbro are thinking theyre all liek the Stingray, which was dire.
3. I started with a Linear cage amp, actually an RSC version, into a home made 2X15 with Fane pop60s, pretty bad. Had an Elgen 100W that sounded OK with the same cab but was so unreliable I swapped it for a Marshall 100 head, which was even worse. Also had a Fender 100W Transistor amp circa 1993, Truly sounded crap, but iirc it only cost about £60 or £70 new.
4. As I already said, I like Hartke amps. The new HH.. But their Bass Strings, Oh dear oh dear. Horrible klanky tings.
5. I love it. Currently using a 3500 4X10 Combo, which I bought new in 06 after trying one in a rehearsal room and being blown away by it, Its a great bread and butter amp, used it in all sorts of situations, loud and not so loud, and its been trouble free, still get people asking what it is and comlimenting the sound.. Had a few others, mainly 3500 heads which i.ve bought faulty and sold. and I use my daughters 120W Kickback as a practice amp.
6. Right, I'm after some advice here. I have a Fender Bassman 100 Silverface, Electrically refurbed it a year or two ago, its not getting used much so I.m considering selling it. It from th mid 70s, and very roadworn. Just small tears wear, and grubby really, but would it fetch a better price Re-covered or as it is ? Also got other well worn amps that will probably be going soon, (Not yet though) So the same applies really.
7.
Must be true so. It would not be the first time that there was confusion about what recordings Carol Kaye played on !!!
http://en.necropedia.org/obituary/Carol_Kaye For just a minute there... what kind of sicko publishes websites like this ?
8. If god meant for us to play piano, he'd have given us 88 fingers. Spotted on another forum a while ago.
9.
Why on earth do you do that?
Up to others what they do, personally I wouldnt be comfortable playing with people who are a lot younger than me, but yknow, each to his own. Been with the same band for 3 years now, one of the ones I tried out for before that were in their mid 30s. I got the gig, but wasnt over keen, then te guitarist commented that they might get 3 years out of me, so I declined. My 'music age' is only 56. I'll be happy to carry on till I'm 70+ but thecurrent band seems to be fizzling out a bit, I dunno what I'll do if it breaks up. My 'other' band aint doing anything much gig wise either.
10. Have to admit that for the last 15 years or so, how old are you ? has been the first question I ask when answering ads for Bass Players.
11.
Ha Ha ,you guessed it. I'm 6' 1" and 17 stone and the rest are all 5' 8"ish and skinny.
Are you sure your not me ?
12. Could always play up to it instead. Big old baggy Cardigan, braces, high waist trousers, cloth cap, slippers, big bag of Werthers on your amp 3days of grey stubble....
13.
Just chill, don't try too hard. Wear a hat at a jonty angle, that should do it. Avoid perms, hair dye and pony tails .
A hat is only OK if your not 6'2"and 18 stone. while the rest are only 5'6 and skinny.
14. Grow a big droopy mustache, wear a good suit and enjoy it without dancing about, If you have grey hair,do something about it.Or you could just be yerself and stop worryin about it. I'm knockin on a bit, but then so is everybody else in both my bands
15. When in doubt, trust your paranoia. Ray Davies.
16. Dunno about the OP. But i'm sure a lot of people give up for a bit when their band drifts apart, only intending to have a break, then after a month or two realise they dont want to do it anymore. Its a kind of grief isnt it ? I reckon people just get disheartened when a band splits, and then by either other band members being dickheads, or by the numerous bullsh*tt*rs, dickheads, dreamers, nutcases and wannabes that populate the sort of netherworld thats Partysounds/Joinmyband and similar sites. A year or two later, more in a lot of cases, they regret it and start playing again and look for a band - on sites like Partysounds/Joinmyband, then either the whole thing starts again, or in some cases.maybe, just maybe, they become the bullsh*tt*rs, dickheads, dreamers, nutcases and wannabes I mentioned. I'm sure this wont happen to Marvin though, nor to any other forum membrs. Obviously it doesnt apply to everybody who uses these sites. But anyone who has spent any time trying to find a band on similar sites will tell you its true in a hell of a lot of cases. And it gets worse as you get older.
17.
Tell me. The problem is this - there are a lot of people out there who like the idea of being in a band, but are absolutely NOT prepared to put in anything like the amount of work and commitment necessary to make it happen. Not even for a part-time, six-gigs-a-year amateur hobby band.
This. Just wish I could learn to spot em sooner.
18. It happens. I didnt play at all in the 80s, music just sort of lost its appeal. Had another couple of years break early 00s as well. Playing more now, and enjoying it more than ever. Dont give it up and sell up just yet, and dont even think about quitting in January. See how you feel in the spring.
19. " I'm not interested in glory, I just want the money" Shel Talmy.
20. I think it was Bill Withers who said that " if piracy continues, a lot of musicians would have to find a different way of making a living, and you wouldnt want Ozzy Ozborne to call rouns and fix your plumbing, now would you"?
21.
If that's really the case then the mono version will be what the Beatles intended as these were the mixes that they spent the time on. The stereo version of the album was polished off in half a day at the end of the session.
I wonder if its because the mono version was mixed for radio. Radio1 was A.M back then.
22. Apart from the ones on the headstock, I like it. Lighten up all you doubters. Music is meant to be fun, and Rock n Roll is meant to be flashy.
23.
Slightly OT, but with two guitarists in a band quite good results can be had to have them tune ever so slightly out with each other - makes for a great 'jangly' thing. (Can get iffy when you add a keyboard player into the mix though!)
Wasnt that an old old country and western trick from donkeys years ago to get the lead player heard over the rest ?
24.
A lot of songs recorded on tape would be vari-speeded to their final tempo during mixing.
Thats what I have always put it down to. That and cos way back when not many people had tuners.
25. Dischord - Dat chord. Theys all the same. Some drunk wannabe overheard at a pub gig. Made me smile though.
