1. couldnt go back to a pick- I use my second finger nail if I want that pick like sound- never lost that either....!
2. I`ve got a Gramma - the normal sized one - I know there is a larger one for bigger rigs- I have had two schroeder cabs and a LM 11 on this- very stable. To be honest for £50 ish inc delivery I do not think there is much point in making your own. When you add together the material needed, transportation to get it- putting this together and more importantly the time to do it- and it may not work as well as the product- cant see why someone wouldnt just buy one. For boomy stages it is a bit of a god send and definately worth it.
3. yeah- its ok to solo a bass line that is a solo anyway- bet we could think of hundreds- most notable-my generation- middle of I wish-car wash- you can call me al- strangely enough they are all pretty short ( as it should be ). Dont mention everything is everything live!! I always think a bass solo is best where you are basically playing the line with a couple of small changes- concentrating on keeping the groove. Mr Wooten is very very right.
4.
One thing I've noticed it it definitely sounds better when I play down the neck, the impact is slightly lost once you get further up the fretboard. Personally I don't have a problem with this guy's tone & I remember the clip when I saw it on Jools Holland's show. However, I do have a problem with his pickguard choice! Just goes to show we are all different
I quite like his tone too- very retro- vintage- no problem with his playing either- dont think it would look as good with the bass under armpits a la marky king!!
5. I had one of these in the 80s- amazing amp and very powerful for 100 watts. Very very heavy though.
6. would you trade for a warwick thumb 5 string nt absolutely perfect.? send me your email and I`ll take and send some pictures. "][email protected] cheers Bob
7. All humans have internal clocks are you are probably a lot better than you think you are with regard to timing. The advice I would give is to play along with records- ( makes it more enjoyable ) and really listen to the drums. This will make your playing more instinctive- concentrate on what the drums are doing and not yourself too much. You will feel it. Then record yourself and listen back- believe me you will get better very quickly.
8. we do a few from the end of November Santa claus is coming to town- jackson 5 version Soul Xmas-graham parker back door santa -fnarr!! please come home for xmas would love to do the waitresses xmas wrapping.
9. there are no "best" basslines- there are only basslines.
10. I have one of these- not only useful for looping but also for recording songs- slowing them down to work them out- also as a sampler for stage use- really great pedal!! Have a bump on me.
11. You lot are very lucky guys- my Mrs couldnt be less interested in my bass playing and the worst thing in the world is if the wags get together- I just know they will be moaning about how much we are gigging. Still she is lovely and when I was a pro musician did not at all moan- didnt have any kids then though. The band is really my social lads thing and the girls know they are really not that welcome at gigs, not that they ever want to go to gigs. Just my way of keeping my hand in I suppose.
12.
I'm all for being positive, but that doesn't stop Moondance from being a bad example of a walking bassline. In fairness, nobody is arguing about if people dance to it or not,it's about constructing a walking line over one chord. In that respect 'So What' is a great example.'Moondance' is not.
Good point pal. I stand corrected.
13.
The flaw in the Moondance line (apart from the poor sound and weak time) does not arise from the fact that there are wrong notes in there (although I suspect there are - not listened to it for a while) but in the fact that there is no logic to them. Its in a minor key so the note options for the minor chords would be similar to So What but the Moondance lines have no direction. They don't lead anywhere, there is no impetus created by the line itself. Its just a randon set off notes from a minor scale. It is clearly played by someone who doesn't understand the art of the walking bass line. I could probably explain better if I had a copy of the tune in front of me but that would require me to listen to it again and I don't want to waste another 4 minutes of my short life on that monstrosity.
Moondance. Pretty successful record and whilst not musically perfect people love it. I have seen them dance to it. Never seen that of so what. Think it is better to be positive about songs, bass players etc than just detail the musical imperfections. Opinions are one thing but negativity, especially in music is not for me.
14. If its notes played on the original record I will play open strings- if its not I wont. Think they certainly add something and should be used. No notes or tones should be avoided- it will limit you- keep an open mind. Just my tuppence
15. Our band- 7 piece soul group have mostly an even split- though our sax player gets a little extra for bookings etc- most of us help with website- pa - recordings etc other than the singer who drinks...
16. Get some sort of loop station and improvise over the bassline/ chords etc. Its what I do ( amongst other things ) Know your scales and LISTEN!!!
17.
To be honest you'd have a much better chance of getting decent money from it somewhere other than basschat. Whilst Warwicks are famed for their bad re-sale value, for some reason it seems to be much exaggerated here. I'd imagine you'd get a lot closer to what you are asking if you flogged it elsewhere. Just my personal experience of selling Warwicks of course, YMMV Good luck with selling it!
I have sold quite a few bits and pieces ,basses,amps-one went to Milan! I have never had a problem with anyone on bass chat. I would rather sell stuff on here than eBay. Thats where I pick up all my bargains.
18.
I'm over in Nashville in a couple of months - may have to get down to Lowend to check out some of these. I hear nothing but good about them from the USA
Bloody hell do you really need another quality bass!!
19. Funny I used to be a guitarist but went onto bass because of course it was easier, with it only having four strings. ( here it comes.......)
20. Had one of these back in the day... With the Black Widows- very reliable- good tone, pretty loud and very, very heavy. Think on youtbe there is a vid of Elvis Costello`s bassist using one, Bruce thomas I think- on some tv show.
21. Schroeder 2 X 12 ridiculously light, ridiculously loud. Great clear tone- a little mid heavy but that can be sorted with your filter on the markbass.
22. Would you be interested in a Warwick thumb nt 5 string? Beatiful instrument just would like another low end. I have a prototype 5 jazz made in 2004. Great bass.
23. Yeah the Schroeder cabs are pretty remarkable- take a little while to break in but the volume from this little cab (s) is extreme and a little surreal. Using an XT Live Bass Pod to warm up the tone but really dont need it- think I need to use less colouring- probably just the compressor ( pretty awesome piece of kit ), couple of effects and the tuner are so useful. Fingers + Bass + amp + speaker- really all that is required. Have found that the tone changes so much when the cabs are being driven too.
24.
Saw Trevor in Waitrose last Thursday! (Apparently he gets a bit fed up of bassists asking him about 'Jean Genie') Regarding the OP, was n't it Jamerson / Funk Brothers on the original Jackie Wilson track? (Therefore could n't be a bum note.......!!!)
Too right Pete. No such thing as a bum note (for me)!! Out of time note though......
