1.
One song I never ever ever get tired of hearing the bass on is "Town called malice"
Yeah I always thought bruce fox ton was great but as soon as I could play I knew he was crap! Has to be james jamerson. - no real comparison. You might as well multiply jaco, wooten, pin x 100 to get to his talent. Enough to base a monstrosity of a record company on. ( motown)
2. I have one of their 5 strings jazz basses. Got it from this very forum. Can't help with regard inporting etc but I asked Brian benevente about my bass ( made in 2004 as a prototype ) and he replied the Same day. Only heard good things. My bass is absolutely amazing and kills my Warwick thumb nt 5 in every way.
3. Always liked jacos tone. Always loved his playing - mostly the funky stuff. - come on etc. Barbary coast - amazing playing. We can discuss this till the cows come home but there is no-one on here that could compare with jaco as a musician. Tone or no tone.
4. Just bought this DVD - got it for half price- its 5 hours long!! Overall pretty good- a couple of points I can use straight away. Good quality and quite funny in parts ( not sure if it was meant to be though!!) There is one part where he is demonstrating keeping the pulse over a measure of drums which basically becomes just the first beat of four measures on a loop. If there is one thing to show us that aliens actually do live on earth it is this!! I knew he looked a bit weird.......
5. Welcome Pal- I am from Hull too- bit different bands- always been in pop and soul bands, mostly. My Pals dad owned Spiders- spent many a night in there. Played at the Adelphi more times than I can count-on with people like the Housemartins, Gargoyles, Happy Mondays, the Farm etc Some video of me at the Adelphi on youtube- if you search for the Company Tines are Tough and there I am dancing in a strange stylee!!

Looping
For my birthday yesterday, the missus very kindly gave me a Digitech JamMan Stereo looper. It's great fun and I've been getting started with some simple patterns, percussive noises and chords. Are there any particularly good resources for learning how to make the best use of looping techniques, or even just inspiration?
YouTube pal. Lots of Wooten etc. I just got an rc 50 boss. Great for practicing the trick is finding songs that you can do the bass, rhythm, drums and melody with a bass. Higher ground is a good one.
7. Brick house-love it. Your love is lifting me higher- can more or less go to sleep in this one but it's great watching the audience! Any Stevie wonder- I wish. Higher ground. Sir duke. Superstition. All good. Too many others to mention really.
8. I would simply go for the lightest speaker/amp combination and use something like a Bass Pod or Sansamp to warm up the tone a little. Believe it or not I use a Little Giant 1000 amp ( £249 brand new ) with a couple of Schroeder cabs- as long as I am using a good pre amp- Sansamp or XT Live I am effectively using the amp just for power. And very powerful it is too. There is no reason for using a big heavy rig in the 21st century when lightweight rigs do the business absolutley fine. Just they are a little more fragile than an Ampeg or Marshall VBA 400 ( had one of these- my back thanks me for getting rid! )
9.
If it's for a charity, yes, do it all the time with no expenses. Mate's partys etc, yes. Expect grub and wine. Jam nights and impromptu get togethers, yes, just good fun. Local village thing? yes. Usually free food. Some bastard making shed loads off our backs, NO
well put that man. would i expect to advise a client for no fee? would that client expect me to do this for no charge? probably not. You set your stall out and if you do something for nothing people seem to think you are not too fussed about getting paid and almost expect it to be free. Madness.
10. I try to do something difference each day, whether learning a couple of songs by ear ( quite enjoyable ) practicing reading skills ( not my best skill ). Improvising over a loop, or working on technique. I have found that I am pretty lazy where practice is concerned and I tend to play stuff and use techniques that I can do easily. Not really the way to go but I am not pro anymore and have other things to do with my time. For reading skills I do pick up a chart now and again and just read through it without playing the bass- bit more convenient for me as I can do this before bed- instead of reading some pulp novel. Sends me to sleep pretty easily!
11.
I'm hardly a Bedroom Snob... Bob...... and I have met him.... hence my cock reference.... but as Martin (MB1) told me.... he was a nice chap when he met him
I stand corrected- not that I meant you pal but the overall feeling of abuse towards a fellow professional. Mind you I suppose I could come across as pretty arrogant when conversing with my fellow professionals in my chosen career. So go figure.
12. I too liked his book and to be honest he seems like a really nice chap. We have all done our bit for the brewery when we were younger. The guy definitely can play. I am not too sure why people on forums have negative opinions about people they have not met, as someone else has said- is it because they have done well and dont just play bass ( however well ) in their bedrooms? Lots of bedroom snobs on here!! Bit of support for our successes please ( and co- Basschatters! )The guy has made time to post on this very forum!! Bob
13. Sold pending the usual
14. Bilbo said ain't nobody- I'm dancing just thinking about the intro - love it. Gotbto be land of a 1000 dances though it gives me the opportunity to relax and watch the lovely ladies!!
15. Don't know why but I couldn't take more than 10secs of this track. His playing with Marcus is unrivalled though
16. Try to relax and play like you would at home practicing. Like the man said play lighter and let the amp/pa do the work- and enjoy!!!
17. Looks like a bit of woodshedding is needed. Can't really understand why you would do his without being a reader as the time it will take to just learn them will be amazing. Being a reader will reduce the time massively. The dots for all these songs are always available so why don't you combine the two skills- ears and dots. After a few you'll be able to work them out and maybe you will start to recognize the patterns. Reading straight off is difficult but if you get the dots they will make learning the songs so much easier and you might pick up a new skill. It is great to be out of your comfort zone!!!
18. Once in a blue moon. New songs sorted on soundcheck. Hate hate hate rehearsals. Some band members love it. ( least experienced ones. ) Sinatra used to hate rehearsals too and if a take took more than one he would want to murder someone. Bit like me. Practice 2 hours a day. Love that.
19. Bump for a great, versatile pedal.
20. Aphex Bass Exciter Sold and delivered to Samuel- cheers
21. No love for these quality pedals??
22. Hi All Couple of pedals for sale as now using a Bass Pod XT Live and dont need these anymore. Tech 21 Bass Driver Deluxe Mint condition- fantastic pedal- works great as a DI and very powerful tone tool- can do lovely clean warm tone and also crunching overdrive. Only selling because my XT live does a very similar job- not as good a DI as the Sansamp though. This is the deluxe version with 6 programmable tones- certainly more than enough! £140 delivered- boxed and packaged well. Manual too. Aphex Bass Exciter SOLD to Samuel Great tool for making that little practice amp sound massive- or a bigger amp sound ginormous!!. This is in great order just a couple of small marks. Works as a DI and pretty great tone tool. Some good soundclips on the web somewhere- on Aphexs site? £50 delivered. No box with this one but manual- will be boxed on delivery. Any questions please call. I am in Hull but delivery no problem. 23.
Can't say I have experience of this myself. But friends of mine who have made the leap into full-time gigging have had mixed experiences: some good, but mostly bad I'm sorry to say. The biggest 'risk' (aside from income) seems to be turning a hobby that you love dearly into a badly paid job that you might end up hating even more than your current day job... Just saying.
And doing a lot more hours than a normal day job too......been there, done that.
24.
Sorry for the hijack, but I've noticed this a few times on the board recently: It's SEGUE. A SEGWAY is a sort of scooter type thing that uses lots of clever cogs and things to make it work. A SEGUE is a bridge between two songs/passages of music. Truckstop
OOOOOOOOOOOOOO! No- A segway is suicide option for rich fellas!! Segue segue sputnik
25.
Maybe naff done by most cover bands, but the original Temptations version is sublime. Smokey Robinson's songwriting at it's best, great arrangement and band. Have a listen, you may be surprised how wonderful it is after years of hearing it done to death.
Good one Pete- I dont think it is that bad a song but when you have been doing this song for over 30 years it feels a bit like a groundhog day moment! How are you doing anyway?- think you did a do at the Willerby Manor last week- we did the night after you- another black tie do - lots of money in there. The usual suspects.
