1.
I expect its the scoopy patrol who don't spend their lives on here over analysing like us lot, :-) and who may not realise that their great sound at home doesn't work at a gig.
Yep- smiley EQ equals fading into the background or bass at ridiculous levels of volume. Mids do it all and no messing. I like to sound honky minus 0.5% all and sundry can hear me. Who cares about the band!! Whoops.....
2. To put the blame upon the band or guitards etc for big gigs is missing the point. Totally the sound guys fault, worked with some great ones and unfortunately some bad ones. Same in any profession- except the legal profession where they are all crap! You can blame the band in part for smaller gigs though. Give the sound man a Zoom H2 in soundcheck and check the recording for what you want and Communicate! Will change when the punters come in anyway ( usually gets better )-or so I convince myself.
3.
It depends whether it is an originals or covers band. If covers, then yea, definitely learn before rehearsal, but I would argue that if it is an originals band then learning/writing songs at practice is good.
Agree but I would class that as a writing session not a rehearsal. Very different.
4. Yep rehearsals are not practices but times when a band gets together to fine tune songs not learn them. What a waste of time listening to someone work out a solo. Still surprised how many bands simply don't get it.
5. Pretty much par for the course for bands- there will always be an element that doesnt pull their weight in any band or business or football team or whatever. I think the problem is not nipping this in the bud at the first opportunity- then you dont have the backbiting etc and everyone knows where they stand. Mind you some people are simply thick and dont understand what they should be doing and have no understanding of what other people do that is above and beyond the call of duty. Been there- done that.
6. Good one pal!!
7. I have a Hydrive rig with the 4 x 10 cab and LH1000 amp- really reaaly loud and clear - easily enough bass for anyone- a bit modern sounding- powerful tweeter ( I switch it off as seems to scoop the mids a bit too much. ) Used my LH1000 with an old Peavey 2 x 10 rated at 375W with no problems whatsoever- 4 ohm cab. LOUD enough for anyone. Cab worth about £30 and ancient.
8. Couple of gigs last week with this amp so I thought I would do a mini review sort of thing First gig with amp- believe it or not a Miss Hull Daily Mail celebration party- about 150 family friends and competitors in the above beauty contest! So lots of eye candy- still.... I always have pa support and really just use my bass amp as monitor- I was really surprised as this amp is easily loud enough to gig- bit louder than my old ampeg portaflex pf500. I had the volume on full and the gain on half- 6- ( goes up to 12 ). No farting- rattles- just lovely warm defined tone. I recorded the gig on my H2 and this thing sounds amazing. Playing a Roadworn Jazz- sounds great both pickups full on- lovely slap sound ( no tweeter on these )- and for fingerstyle with neck pickup rolled back a bit sounds unbelievable. Actually this thing is probably the best tone I have had- probably ever. I am so surprised with this amp. Gig 2 - glitter ball in massive hall- about 300 people. Rather posh do- bit of a rickety stage- volume on half- lovely warm tone- easy to move- light- ( on castors though I take the back two off so I can hear the speaker better ) - though dont suppose it makes any difference anyway with this amp. Overall I think the only reason I would change this amp- or gig with another one- is for looks and Vintage vibe- and cannot see how I would gt the same vibe with anything other than an SVT stack or new Fender Bassman Pro-I like to have a backup and do buy lots of gear - I have to declare my band earnings so always spend what I earn on gear. I do fancy an SVT VR rig or bassman but am a little frightened re- weight of the things. This amp does it all- has that vintage vibe- sounds fantastic- is light compared to most of the combos I have had in the past and I love how it says Fender on the front. Overall very happy but will still go for an SVT or Bassman as backup. Think I`ll sell my Hartke LH1000 and Hydrive cab next year once I find another vintage looking rig.
9. Would you swop this for a outboard di by sadowsky? Mint as new still in box?
10. Playing for 36 years- most of which- ( for first 20 years - 4- 5 per week ) Now about 4-5 per month. One period was doing 28 gigs per month for many many months. So a very ridiculous number. Played everywhere. Probably why I despise all audiences, however many encores.
11. Yeah I think bass players are spoilt now. 1000w in a small package - put it in your gig bag! I couldn't believe it when my postie handed over my lm2 at the doorstep! Just sold this to nice guy homer as I don't get lightweight anymore. I do think something gets lost in translation. That's why I gig with a hartke lh1000. Now this would be classed as a heavy amp but then just a tiddler. It's probably all psychological but I feel I need something with a bit more weight to my sound. Still a different world to a big valve amp and a 8 x 10!
12. Once you experience an ampeg v4b you truly know what heavy is. 60lbs is not heavy believe me.
13. I finally bit the bullet and got one of these- Fender Bassman TV 15. First Impressions- the thing is really quite big- not featherlight but about the same as my Hydrive 4 x 10. About that size too. Looks absolutely fantastic- real quality finish. Soundwise couldnt be happier- with bass on 3 ( out of 12) , Mid on 12 and treble on 3 get a lovely warm old school tone. The combo is really louder than I thought too. Could easily gig with this- mind you it is 350W. Though I gig with a LH1000W amp. Overall great combo- looks unbelievable- sounds fantastic and loud- the thing is- why were they not popular?- I suppose they were expensive- retailed at over £1000 RRP. Got mine for £699 from Dawsons- for what it is- bargain.
14. How about this one- retro cab is a Hartke Hydrive with custom cover. Nowhere near as retro as this one -amazing amp.
15. All down to EQ pal- your gear is certainly good enough to get you a good sound. Lose the low frequencies and boost the low mids and go from there- keep all other frequencies flat until you have the sound you like. I know people that simply remove all bass and then add until they get the bottom they like. You would be surprised how little bass you need when playing at volume- it is these bass frequencies that will muddy up your tone and make you less defined.
16. I have a lm2 for sale for £280 delivered. Amazing amp. Tiny and very very loud.
17. Just looked at the band on YouTube. Fun group but I hope you won't do the flea style intro to higher ground. Could hear the crowd talking over it!
18. Ignore the last post- a senior moment!!
19. Hi Pal- sorry I have bought a new combo instead. The LM 2 is a markbass head, not an Ampeg- super reliable- selling this for £280 delivered. Hardly any use at all.
20. Everyday People by Sly and the family stone. One note.
21.
Yea i supported both Mud and Sweet on numerous occasions, Les became unrecogniseable and Brian had to be almost carried on stage
Yep I was a pro bassman at the time and seeing Brian trying to walk into the venue was bad enough. For that reason never saw any of their sets. To be honest this was another reason for me to get a "proper" job.
22. There's loads of clever pedals you could buy but you don't need them. Cut your bass eqs ( those on the left of graphic ) and cut the high frequencies. ( those on the right ). Add volume and you'll be there. Sounds to me as though your eq is a little scooped. It'll sound ok just the bass but in a band mix you'll disappear.
