1 x 8 ohm and 1 x 4 ohm speaker on stereo power amp ?
hamfist replied to hamfist's topic in Repairs and Technical
Great. Thanks guys, thats all I needed to know. cheers. -
As per title. For std solid state PA-type power amp, will having one 8 ohm load on one side and one 4 ohm load on the other side stress the power amp at all ? I am well aware that the 8 ohm side would be getting reduced power compared to the 4 ohm side, and this is not an issue. I don't want to be stressing the power amp though. Is each side of the stereo power amp completely separate ?

SOLD Immaculate TH500 amp. Cracking amp, just not quite to my tastes. Fantastic condition and works 100% perfectly. No issues whatsoever. Will come with a very protective laptop case, which seems almost made to measure to hold the amp plus a couple of cables. £410 posted to you in mainland UK. No trades this time thanks. As with all my listings, no cats in the pictures are included in the sale. Potential string heights can vary massively between different players. Some players almost just stroke the strings with the finest touch, others (including me) play like a possessed gorilla. For me, I can never ever get the E string down to less than about 3mm at the 12th fret, whatever the quality of the neck and fretwork, simply because I pluck the strings so hard they need a lot of space to vibrate without causing way too much fret buzz. Other folks can get their actions down to 1.5mm or even lower on the 12th Fret E string. I find that these plays always play very gently though. I'd say as a general rule of thumb a good, well adjusted, high quality neck and action should be able to get down to 2mm for a light player and 3mm for a heavy player (12th fret E string). Personally I'm happy playing actions up to 4-5mm, but I am aware I am not the norm.

Here ... http://www.customworldguitarparts.com/ I have oneJ neck from them, and another on the way. IMO significantly better than Mighty Mite. THey just are a bit more rigid IME and slightly better finished. Use Graphtech nuts too.

Third time I've done business with Mike now. Amp trade this time. He has been a thoroughly reliable, reasonable and pleasant chap throughout all my dealings with him. Thanks Mike !

Trade now agreed. Sadly for sale as my band seems to be folding and I'm looking to have less invested in an amp than I have in this one as I pursue other musical goals. The amp is immaculate apart from one tiny paint chip from the lower edge of the front panel. Very small. Pics below It's the std Orange coloured version, and comes with the Orange cover. Valves are a brand new matched quad of Tung Sol 6550's (I have receipt for the professional installation of these) installed last month, including a full service and checkover. Preamp tubes are excellent old 12AX7 Mullards in V1 and V2 and an absolute NOS balanced Brimar 12AT7 in V3. A very significant improvement in the std valves. The tone is stunning in it's depth and "3D-ness". Best sounding amp I have ever owned. Noise floor is very low. Weight is about 24kg, which is heavy but not that heavy. A do-able one-handed lift and an easy two hander. Of course the amp can break up if you want it but I was surprised how loud the thing goes and stays pretty clean too. The one gig I did with it (and I keep the base amp tone as only just fattening up, almost clean really), the master was at 10'o'clock (through my Genx 2x12). This is in a fairly loud rock band with no FoH support. I was impressed. Anyway, collection only from the Southampton area. I will not courier this. Prepared to meet up halfway for fuel costs. Only PX I'd be interested in is a smaller, lighter, and significantly cheaper amp (250-500W). Price is £799. I'm making quite a big loss on this, considering the costs of completely revalving it. Great amp. I'm just not sure whats out there at the moment. For a solo acoustic guitar player and singer, I know there are great FX processors offering guitar FX and key-sensitive vocal harmonies .... all fantastic. But ... is there anything out there that will produce a useful bass and/or synth -type backing for a solo guitarist performer ? Anyone heard of or used such a thing ?

need help to find which model is this aria pro II
hamfist replied to Gregdach's topic in Bass Guitars
Nice, thanks for the input. Do you have any further informations about it, is it any good ? I don't really know that brand of instruments. Thank you!
I'm afraid that I don't know much about it at all. It will not be a Matsumoku, Japan-made Aria though, but will have been made in Korea I think, once ARia moved their main manufacturing out of Japan in the late 80's. Probably a half decent instrument. If it plays well and sounds nice then it IS nice ! -

Well, the model name on the truss rod cover says ASB-65, so that's the model. It looks pretty much identical to the IGB-65 you show in the advert. Maybe they changed the model numbers slightly for European/US/Japanese markets with tiny changes for each market. Edit - it's a USA model, ASB-65, according to this Talkbass thread ...... http://www.talkbass.com/threads/identify-this-bass.832053/ -
Thanks for that WoT, very useful. Going to be having a play through Bassman Steve's Walkabout now on weds hopefully, which will obviously give me a great idea of what it can do. THanks again, for putting the effort of doing the clip !
OK - I'll try and have a look today. Here's me & my Walkabout playing that tune, albeit not so grindy... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Th8rvu2X3S0
Nice version. The Walkabout sits in the mix very well, despite the attempts of those overenthusiastic guitars and drums.
What kind of grind are you after? Post up a clip or two and if I have time I'll try and put something together...
Something like this maybe .... https://soundcloud.com/alanbridges/wounded-paw-black-sheep

I take most of it back. There are a fair few half decently recorded clips of the walkabout, but just none of them showing me a P bass, with roundwounds, with a pick, getting some grind, which is what I'm looking for. The best one I could find showing the OD is a couple of Japanese chaps having a good chat whilst playing around a bit on the Walkabout, but again it's not a P and not with a pick. fussy bugger ain't I.
-
Ha ha... Some of the 'appalling' ones would have been mine, so I'll bow out at this point :-D
I suspect yours were not appalling, but just not showing what I wanted to find out from the amp. I'm looking to push any amp into some grind, mainly with a P bass.

I have read so much good stuff about the Mesa Walkabout. However, having never had access to one myself, it's difficult to get an idea of what it can do. All the videos etc that I've been able to access online have been appalling in sound quality. Can anyone link to anything online that shows what the Walkabout can really do. I'm especially interested in the quality of it's overdrive. Cheers.

This is a bass I put together. The P was in the standard Fender sweetspot. The MM was a touch further back towards the bridge (you cannot overlap the MM and the P "sweetspots" whichever way round you put the P coils). The bass worked really well, but the MM, whether series or parallel, always overpowered the P in any attempt at mixing the two. So ultimately, when mixing them, I always used the MM in single coil mode, so basically making the bass a PJ setup at that point. I'll be honest and admit that I have never been a fan of the std MM-type sound though. Nowadays I stick to PJ's.

PJ pickup balance question. Also help me choose ;-)
Sorry to hijack, any idea if the STK-J2B would work well with a Fender Original P-Bass pickup?
Yes, the Fender orig P bass pickup is relatively low output so should match up OK with the STK-J2B
