1.
interested in trades at all?
Sorry, no trades on this one. Need the cash.
2. Personally, I don't think you will achieve any extra musical tones with your suggestions, except perhaps putting all the pickups in series. Even then, I suspect you will get a big, boomy, rather muddy sound. And yes if you have a std single coil J pickup it would introduce some 60Hz hum into the signal, but then it already does that whenever you are using at all, so what's the difference. Of much more musical use IMO would be to add an East Parametric Mids control or something similar.
3. Just another point to mention when Fender neck swapping, as the width of the neck heels and body heel slots does vary a bit ..... so long as you are swapping like for like, in terms of scale length and fret numbers, the neck will be fine so long as the neck heel actually fits in the neck slot (check heel shape too, as 50's style necks have a squarer heel profile ... it's very obvious). If the heel slot in the body is a bit too wide, the only difference is cosmetic, it makes absolutely zero difference to tone. I have swapped several dozen Fender and Fender-type necks on different bodies and that is my opinion. If the body's heel slot is a fraction too narrow then with a bit of careful sanding you can ease it open just enough to fit a new neck. One more note on neck profiles...... Mighty Mite necks are pretty slim front to back. Allparts are very chunky. They all have the 38mm nut.
4. SOLD 1994 Ampeg SVP Pro preamp. Possibly the best preamp Ampeg ever made. It's in excellent shape for a 90's preamp (serial number dates it as 1994). A bit of buckle rash on the top and the bass knob has taken a knock at some point so is not quite straight, but still works smoothly and accurately. Having a look inside shows that this amp was built with some care and with quality components. Valves are all premium matched JJ's. It comes with a (non-original) two switch footswitch to switch the graphic EQ and mute on/off. You will have to provide your own 1/4" stereo lead though. I have not used the FX loop so cannot comment on it. It has a very impressive range of EQ and drive available. Not a high gain unit but still capable of a decent lower gain old school fuzz if that's your cup of tea. Also does a very clean clean if you want that too, and everything inbetween including those fat "just-breaking-up" Ampeg tones. A very wide range of output using the master volume knob so will be compatible with virtually any power amp or FX return of a head. I used it into the FX return of my GK 1001RB and it sounded fantastic. What you all want to know is ...... is it a quiet one or an annoying noisy one, as some of these units are. Well, I'm glad to say that on this SVP Pro the noise floor is very low. There is no noise issue at all. I have done a couple of soundclips of it (via the preamp out, which involves every valve in the signal) and you can clearly hear that there is no XS noise/hum/hiss between the playing whatsoever. There has been no noise-gating whatsoever on these clips. In fact, there has been no EQ, compression or any other effect on them, simply the tone that came out of the preamp out socket. There is a second or two of hum when you switch the unit on, as the transformers and valves get up to temp, which settles very quickly. Very normal in valve gear, and there are 5 valves in this preamp. I have found that any further minimal physical vibration from the transformers are silenced completely by simply damping the bottom of the unit with a piece of foam underneath. Classic dirty Ampeg tone, without the weight ! I almost let this go once before, but couldn't bring myself to part with it, but this time I'm afraid it has to go. Price is a bit of a bargain at £275 posted to you in mainland UK, or a bit less to collect near Southampton. No trades please. Buy with confidence, I will do my best to make sure that you are happy .... read my feedback - link at the bottom of all my posts. Soundclips made by me of this very preamp ..... 5. Jazz bass neck is what you need. Should make a world of difference. I'm the same with neck width, just struggle with any nut width more than about 39mm. Measure the width of the neck heel on your P, at it's widest point. Should hopefully be about 63.5mm (although Squiers are sometimes a bit different to the Fender std spec). A J bass neck with the same heel width "should" be pretty much a straight swap. However, there may well be some tinkering needed, like just gently widening the body's heel slot, or adding a shim under the neck heel, or maybe easing open one or more of the neck mounting holes on the body a tad. It's not difficult and adding a J neck will transform it for you IMO. Where do you live ? If you are not confident in these things I'd be surprised if you can't find someone local willing to help you.
6. Nice neat work on your wiring too. Makes mine look like a dog's breakfast.
7. What's the bottom one in the pic ?
8.
Thanks Conan! Never heard of that retailer before so will look for other goodies later. Lefty J&D Jazz basses for £97 with solid alder bodies is very very tempting, even though they don't do the maple fingerboards sadly. What are they like under the pick guard? Are there big routs out for the pickups and so on? Could be tempted to "Jaco" their lefty sunburst J if it looks ok without the pickguard
Wouldn't look good without pickguard. There's an oversized rout for the pickup there.
9. I have done many, many successful bass pickup routs with a Dremel, using their router attachment. It's still all handheld though. The key things when routing with a Dremel that I have learned are ...... 1/ Measure , and then measure again, with strings in position before marking the rout. 2/ Put tape (sellotape is great for this) all around the area to protect the finish). 2/ Hog out a good load of the wood with a std electric drill using a) a Forstner bit, or any big old wood drill bit (mark the bit with tape so that it does not go down deeper than you want). 3/ Once you get to routing, do it in good light. Rout down slowly and carefully a mm or two at a time with a decent router bit (6mm diameter is a good size). 4/ Personally, I always rout out the upper few mm of wood a little small and then finish off with a big metal file and then fine abrasive paper. I get a great controlled edge like that. 5/ practicing on something you do not value first would be a very good idea. Make sure it is hardwood though, so it will react similar to a bass body. Take your time, be sensible and routing basses with a Dremel is safe and effective.
10. I have just bought a second one of these, to get a nice black, alder Jazz body, so now have quite a bit of experience of them. Several points worth mentioning .... 1/ THe bodies are superb, made of solid alder and are well finished. Fender dimensions (incl neck pocket) 2/ The necks are staggeringly good to play. Are made from good wood and are stable. The edge of the frets may be a little sharp in places but this is so easy to rectify it is almost a non-problem. THe general fretwork (as is level-ness) is very good on both of mine. The lacquer finish on both necks I have is cracked around the binding in the upper frets region - I don't care about this - it's a budget neck. Has std fender J dimensions - 63.5mm neck heel width. 3/ THe pickups are some of the best J pickups I have played in a modern, punchy with a bit of twang way. Not particularly vintage sounding. 4/ The tuners are not fit for purpose. They have a "waist" and on the E and A strings will not easily allow the string to be pulled low enough to get a nice resonant tone on those strings. If you buy one of these basses, be prepared to change the tuners to ones with straight posts. 5/ The nuts can be variable. ONe my first one, the A string was cut too low, and I have heard others report this. On my second, it was perfect, in fact better set up than any other new bass that I have played - amazing (but probably a bit of luck too). 6/ electrics - mini-pots, 250K, work well, not shielded, but no nasty noises. 7/ Strings - roundwounds, I actually like them a lot. 8/ Bridge - awful. It does the job but is wafer thin and has no slots on the bridge plate to stop any side-to-side movement of the barrels when you pick hard. 9/ Tone - really very, very good. On average, much better than any Squier J I have played. For me, Squier skimp on quality woods and I can hear this. The basics of the J&D is good wood and good pickups. The ancilliary bits and bobs are a bit sh1t but they are cheap and easy to change. Overall a great budget Jazz. I actually like the necks so much, I have them on both my main basses now.
11. Mesa Boogie AER Phil Jones Trace Elliot Glockenklang Krampera Baer Jule amps Demeter to name a few. All depends on your definition of "budget" of course.
12. I have found that folks tend not to believe quite how good the tonerider pickups are when I tell them. Seems like a lot of people don't feel like they have bought something good unless they pay a lot for it.

14. now SOLD Mark One 2-Looper pedal. Seriously useful. Switches between 2 loops with one stomp, on switches all loops on/off with one stomp. Immaculate and perfect working order. £25 posted to you in mainland UK
15. Like pretty much any cab you will be able to break it if you put a seriously low bass frequency-heavy signal into it with extreme dynamic peaks at high volume. If you're sensible though, that combination should be just fine. I had a neo 212 once and used to push it very, very loud on occasion.
16. BC's Woodster has a Bassmods sixer (I think) and has raved to me about how wonderful it is. No experience myself though
17.
Can't see any images....
OK, links to the host pages for the images added too. Not sure why you can't see the original images, but computers never were predictable devices !
