After many, many trials of using compression and then not, and then back to compression etc etc. I have come to the conclusion that I like compression very much BUT ......... it needs to be an expensive, high quality compressor with pretty fine control, used VERY sparingly. I still get loads of dynamics but it all simply sounds nicer, punchier and more present. Currently use the Empress comp.

New neck - All Parts v. Mighty Mite v. ?
hamfist replied to franzbassist's topic in Repairs and Technical
I've not tried any aftermarket fretless necks. However, a key thing to look out for would be to make sure you get one with an ebony or ebanol fretboard. These would be immensely harder wearing than a rosewood board, which would be the cost-saving option. -
Alternatively, I have a few nice small pieces of rosewood. I would be happy to post you one for, say, £4 all in. If you're handy you could shape you're own. The piece would be big enough for a few thumbrests so you wouldn't need to get it right first time.

Alder seafoam green Jazz body, std Fender dimensions, 63.5mm heel slot. Routed for a P pickup (in the classic Fender P spot, includes custom pickguard and choice of black or chrome control covers. All in superb condition. Also routed for a fourth control (currently fits a mini pot) under the pickguard, which you can either use or put a blank unconnected pot & knob in. I managed to fit the std classic Jazz passive wiring plus a John East parametric mids control in there (also had space for the battery). Pickguard has been fitted on with double-sided tape, which does look very sleek and awesome. You can, of course, also drill holes and screw it on if you prefer. Comes with a chrome bridge. However, I had it fitted with a black bridge (which I am keeping) which gave a fantastic look. I think this is from perhaps the coolest looking bass I have used. Well, it looks very cool when I'm not wearing it. However, I'm not a big bloke and I just think Jazz bodies are too big for me, they look a bit silly. So I'm going to make the whole bass up with a smaller type body. £75 posted to you in mainland UK. Suitable packaging for sending a Jazz Bass neck?...

If you can get a solid cardboard tube to fit, generally made for artwork, they are extremely protective. -

WITHDRAWN - sorry Ampeg SVP Pro preamp, recently bought from BC's Jacko. This is just one of those pieces of kit that I had always wanted to try to "get it out of my system". Now that I have it, it is clearly a great preamp but it's just not going to displace my current rig. So time for someone else to have a go. It would be a waste if it wasn't being used. It's in very decent shape for a 90's preamp (serial number dates it as 1994). A bit of buckle rash on the top and the bass knob has taken a little bang at some point so is not quite straight, but still works smoothly and accurately. As far as I can tell everything works perfectly. It comes with a two switch footswitch and a stereo lead to switch the graphic EQ and mute on/off. I have not used the FX loop so cannot comment on it. A very impressive range of EQ and drive are available. Not a high gain unit but still capable of a decent lower gain old school fuzz if that's your cup of tea. Also does, cleany clean if you want that too, and everything inbetween. A very wide range of output using the master volume knob so will be compatible with virtually any power amp or FX return of a head. I used it into the FX return of my GK 1001RB and it sounded great. What you all want to know is ...... is it a quiet one or a damned annoying noisy one, as some of these units are. Well, I'm glad to say that the noise floor is very low. There is no noise issue at all. I have done a couple of soundclips of it (via the preamp out) and you can clearly hear that there is no XS noise/hum/hiss between the playing whatsoever. There has been no noise-gating whatsoever on these clips. In fact, there has been no EQ, compression or any other effect on them, simply the tone that came out of the preamp out socket. There is a few seconds of hum when you switch the unit on, as the transformers and valves get up to temp, which settles very quickly. Very normal in valve gear, and there are 5 valves in this preamp. Classic dirty Ampeg tone, without the weight ! Price is a very reasonable £319 posted to you in mainland UK, or a bit less to collect near Southampton. No trades please. Soundclips made by me of this very preamp ..... Bought a preamp from Graeme. It was exactly as described and in better condition than I was expecting. It was packed extremely well for shipping ! He communicated well throughout and was just a thoroughly decent chap to deal with.
Any hint of a dead spot or spots on your graphite necks?
None.
Re Status necks, I've never liked the sound of carbon fibre necks, and I've played a lot (and owned a few).
I am not convinced that graphite necks have a "sound". I have owned graphite-necked Statuses and now have a STatus neck on a traditional Jazz design. The Statuses sounded like Statuses (obviously !). The Jazz still sounds like a Jazz, just with a really rigid and resonant neck. There is no particular spike in any frequency range, or any other "graphite-ness" in the tone. It is unfortunate that people associate graphite necks with the type of sound that Status and Zon basses make. It has little to do with the neck on these basses and more to do with the general design.
-
The only negative thing you have to say about your bass is it's neck, so I would simply replace that. If the budget allows, go for a Status graphite neck ! Looks awesome with a seafoam green body too. THe MIghty mite necks are decent for the money, it all depends what your budget is. A Status neck is in a different league though.

Gallien Krueger rig: change all, change some or keep as is?
hamfist replied to JimBobTTD's topic in Amps and Cabs
I went straight from an MB500 to a 1001RB and I thought the RB sounded way better TBH. THE MB is loud and light, sure, but it's really quite extended in the low and high freq ranges and always sounded a bit "meh" in the mids, whatever I did with the EQ. The RB is much more flat in it's basic response. I strongly prefer it's base tone. This thread has also just reminded me that I had a GK neo 115 for a while and really preferred it to their neo 212 (both were gen II cabs). It was lighter and sounded better. I only got rid of it for my current Genz cab, which I bought in the final silly low price end of line blowout. A couple of the neo 115's would be a great rig with your 700RB, and each part should be a reasonable one-handed lift, if you are reasonably fit and well. You would only need one cab for most gigs as well I would guess. -
Repairs to a Warwick "Oiled" body - help please
hamfist replied to Grangur's topic in Repairs and Technical
It certainly does look Lacquer-like. The word "oil" can actually mean things in terms of guitar finishing. Even if you are more specific and say "Danish oil" it can mean many different things. Many oils are in fact a mix of oils and varnish, so over time basically will become a varnished finish. I suspect this is the case with your bass. Not quite sure the best way to repair it. One option is to sand the body down enough to take off the "varnish" but leave the stain, and then do a Danish oil (Colron) and Wax (Briwax) finish over the top. THis type of finish is a complete piece of cake, takes only 2-3 days and looks awesome. The only risk as I see it is that you might end up taking off more of the stain whilst sanding than you had hoped for. All I can say is that the one stained Warwick body that I have refinished, the stain went really deep. If you did take off more colour than you wanted you could always re-stain with some blue, which would not be that difficult. A lot of this depends on how experienced and confident you would be doing these things. Have to say I love the Warwick trans blue finishes !! -
Gallien Krueger rig: change all, change some or keep as is?
hamfist replied to JimBobTTD's topic in Amps and Cabs
I'd keep the amp but replace your cabs. In fact why not keep the current cabs in situ for rehearsals then just buy a good new 2x12 which on it's own should be ample for gigging, then the only cab-lugging you have to do is on gig nights. I have owned the GK 212 neo and it was loud, but only OK in as far as tone IMO. Tone is utterly subjective of course but for me the mids were not good for me on that cab, a bit too scooped and a bit harsh in general. You may love it though. Certainly not an awful cab. There are certainly a lot of great, and relatively light 2 x 12 cabs out there (by light I mean under 25kg (some are significantly less than that). I have found a magnificent cab for me in the Genz NX2, which is unfortunately now out of production. Barefaced and TKS are both companies to look at for the higher end stuff. As is Aguilar and Bergantino. What is your budget ? -
Erm, I don't know if you're being ironic here or if you've missed the point.
He's just being accurate. Green things look green because they absorb all the other colours but reflect the green light .... back into our eyes so we perceive them as green. Look back at what you wrote originally. /lesson

Sold a pedal to Lee, who was a complete gent throughout. Comms were great. All in all a thoroughly easy, easy deal. Thanks very much.
Hamfist. where does the ground connection of the pickup go?
It should connect to any of the other grounded parts. For the purposes of a pickup ground wire, all other "grounds" in the wiring are effectively one part as far as the wiring sees it, so you can connect anywhere to ground. If you are unsure then connect it to where the bridge ground wire connects to the wiring loom, or to either of the ground connections on the output jack (the hot connection usually goes on the shortest lug).

Interesting frequency bands for bass parametric EQ
hamfist replied to Annoying Twit's topic in Effects
CHeddatom's description fits in with what I would say too, although it does depend a lot on what bass you are playing. For a J or P bass, most amps could do with a little boost at 300-400Hz, to add punch and definition to fingerstyle playing, but with no added clank or grit at all. Often the 150-250Hz area is where boom and wooliness can sometimes be a problem, which is why I would advise to generally not boost in that region that much, if at all. Much above 450-500Hz you start to get a harsher type of mid boost for a more aggressive sound. I like that, but that doesn't sound like what you are looking for. Also be aware that a lot of this is affected by specific cab/stage/cab position and room. -
Gallien Krueger rb700mk2 or Orange Terror Bass 500
and the contour will drastically cut all mids.
Of course, it's just the frequency centre that is 500Hz.
