1.

IMO, that is beautiful, and looks like a quality bit of design and engineering too.
2. SOLD Yes, really, a COG Knightfall ! For sale, really ! I say that because no-one ever sells them, because they are so awesome. Tom at COG is a genius. This one is only available as I have two and I think one is enough. About 6-9 months old, Velcro on the back (easily removable). Works absolutely perfectly. Low noise. Takes standard Boss-type 9V PSU (not included). No wait time for build. Yours for £93 posted to your door. The demo on the COG website Knightfall page is of this very pedal. 3. This thread has convinced me even more thoroughly that some bass designers are completely nuts and/or blind. Oh, and possibly deaf too.
4.
Also, interesting info on how to fit a low B string - you have to avoid twisting it apparently
Good point. This is important. Still important with a std E string IME. Much less noticeable with A string and smaller. So, the thicker the string the more effect any twist in the string will have on playing, punch and tone.
5.
Just try it. If you like it, go for it. There is no right or wrong answer to the question
+1
6.
If you get fret-buzz on the higher section of the neck and cannot get rid of it without having seriously high action, then this would sound to me like the angle of the neck in the pocket may be wrong. This problem would sound to me like the angle of the neck as it sits in the pocket is pulling the headstock back and pushing the top of the neck up (to make it too close to the strings). Clearly tweaking the truss-rod isn't working unless you make the action stupidly high. So this would sound to me like there's a shim in the bottom of the pocket when it's not needed. Do you have a shim in the pocket? If you do, take it out, screw the neck tight back into place and try again.
Going to have to disagree here. So long as the bridge can adjust high or low enough to accommodate it, the angle of the neck in the heel slot will make no difference whatsoever to the action, neck relief or truss rod adjustment needed. It's straightforward physics. If you remove a neck shim from the rear of the heel slot it has exactly the same effect as lowering the bridge by "x" amount to compensate. The entire neck geometry will stay the same. The only change would be that the string height to the body will reduce a bit. Also the pickups would also have to be lowered a bit to maintain the same distance from the strings.
7. Sold a Jazz body to Hugh. He seems a very decent chap. Great communication throughout and an easy, easy deal. Thanks mate !
8.
Saying that I have just had a shower and thought about what you said and I think this project is to adventurous for me at the moment. So thank you for pointing all that stuff out to me, but feel maybe one for the future???
IT's a pity you have suffered from a loss of confidence. Building your own bass bitsa is hugely satisfying and you will bond with it in a way that is completely different to a pre-made bass. Building Fender-style bitsas is a piece of cake for anyone with even a modicum of DIY ability. THe key thing is to make sure your heel width on the neck and the heel slot on the body are pretty close. Fender's standard stat is a 2.5" (63.5mm) heel width, but Fender-style bodies and necks do vary somewhat, from something like 62mm - 65mm heel width. You can always widen a body's heel slot a bit with sandpaper and a block, but if the heel slot is considerably too wide for a neck it will not look cosmetically too great (although I would argue that functionally having gaps around the side of the neck heel has no effect on vibration transmission or tone). WHy not buy a cheapo P body at the same time as your "lusted after" P body. You could initially put together your bitsa with the cheapo body, learning all your lessons with no great fear of mistakes, and then once all is sorted, you can change to the nicer body. As for necks, the Mighty Mite ones are good, although I like the cwgp necks (from the Netherlands on ebay) even better. Be aware of the basic differences between Jazz and Precision style necks. They are very different in feel but both fit in the same bodies (and obviously the same heel slots).
9. Just looked back through my messages. I sold it to threedaymonk in April last year. It has certainly done the rounds on here, through no fault of it's own. I think it just looks so pretty that people buy it on impulse, and then realise that they don't really need a fretless. That 's what happened with me anyhow.
10. Once you get much above £500, what you get is generally "different" rather than "better" in terms of playability and tone. So, yes, I think a grand is a very decent and reasonable budget to get a superb bass. If you look around and/or are handy with modding you can spend considerably less than £500 and still get an incredible bass.
11. Another option - Keep your Jazz neck and buy this .... http://basschat.co.uk/topic/240216-loaded-ash-pj-jazz-body/ And yes, it s mine! Personally, I don't think adding a J-retro, or different J pickups will change the inherent sound of a Jazz. East preamps are great (and I have owned several) but in the end they are still only EQ control. It sounds like you crave a P pickup in the neck position. Personally, I think PJ's offer virtually everything a Jazz can do PLUS that big Precision sound. It's a no brainer. Other option, of course, is to have your MIM Jazz routed for a P pickup in the neck position. Not sure how much a luthier would charge but it's a fairly simple job for anyone handy with a router or a Dremel. Making your own Scratchplate (as you would need a new one) using a Dremel is a also a piece of pi$$.
12. SOLD Great solid Ash Jazz body, completely loaded as a PJ pickup setup, for sale. Just add a neck and play ! - New Jazz body, nicely finished with Danish oil and wax. Really nice grain patterns. - Tonerider Jazz bridge pickup - Wilkinson Alnico V Precision pickup, these work very nicely together as a PJ. - Highest quality very solid Gotoh bridge (can't for the life of me find the model number), allowing full 3D adjustment of each saddle, AND saddle locking. String spacing adjustable between 18mm and 19.7mm. You cannot buy these any more. - Standard Jazz control plate, VVT controls. - Pearloid white scratchplate - subtlely small solid ebony thumbrest right where I seem to want to rest my thumb. Very comfy. - strap buttons, neck plate and screws. - Neck heel slot is the bog standard 63.5mm Fender width. I have had this set up as a whole bass and it sounds gorgeous, as good as any passive PJ I have ever played. However, and this is very shallow, I just can't bring myself to like the Jazz bass looks. It's a long while since I've had a Jazz and I just fancied one again but I've tried and tried and Jazz looks are just leaving me flat now. Not sure why but there it is. So, I've used the neck on another bitsa. Price is £105 posted to you within mainland UK.
13. Any idea if the Bart pickups are nearer their classic or original bass series in sound ? One I love, one I hate.
14. SOLD Really nice set of TOnerider Jazz pickups. Bridge and neck set (please note these are the std longer pickup for the bridge position). Don't be misled by the cheap price, these are really excellent Jazz pickups, vintage correct manufacture, Alnico magnets. And the tone - very impressive, punchy and articulate. Would be a great upgrade for many a Jazz bass. £35 posted to you in mainland UK. Includes screws and foam.
15. now WITHDRAWN. I decided that selling this was like selling my soul .... we have been through so uch together. So I think we'll stay together until the end. THis is absolutely a one-of-a-kind body. Started as a Westone Thunder 1a mk3 body, having a maple/walnut spine with Ash wings. THese are lovely resonant bodies. Beautifully aged "old" wood. ATTENTION - Will fit standard FENDER necks !!! Has a 63.5mm heel slot width and the scale is perfect for std J or P necks. Refinished in a lovely peppermint green. Routed for various pickup configurations, so it's choose your pickguard and fit your pickups of choice ! The pickguard it will come with is for a reverse PJ setup. Has a good sized control cavity for fitting electronics and a battery compartment that will take one or two 9V batteries. Also comes with the genuine Westone "A Matsumoku product" neck plate. Has a number of holes for controls. You don't have to use them all, just fit with dummy pots/knobs for any unused ones. Mini-toggle switch is currently wired up as a battery on/off switch which is very useful for leaving your bass plugged in but not wasting your battery juice. Also comes with an output jack and strap buttons. Pretty light too. POsted to you in mainland UK for £60. PIcs, including a couple with the body made up as a whole bass, with a Fender-style neck. Obviously the sale is ONLY for the body, two rear cavity covers, pickguard, neck plate, cheapo BBOT bridge and strap buttons
16. now SOLD I'm just not into red, and the neck has a slightly too wide nut (40mm) for me, so I know I won't use these. Someone will hopefully enjoy using the parts or building a bitsa. £50 for the lot posted within mainland UK. Body is a solid poplar Overwater classic jazz body, obviously routed for PJ pickups. Will take a standard Jazz-shaped pickguard (with a P hole obviously), and a standard Fender-sized Jazz control plate. Bridge holes are std Fender 5-in-a-row (plus 2). PLease note there is a small hole drilled through the body from the pickup cavity to the rear of the body. The finish is more of a plum sparkle than red. There is also a battery compartment if you want to fit active electronics. Neck is very nice actually, although slightly wider than a std Jazz neck with a 40mm nut width. It has a 62.5mm heel width, so will fit a std Fender neck pocket with a slight gap (about 0.5mm) around the edge. Although please measure any body you want to fit it to, as Fender/Squier heel widths do seem to vary greatly. This neck is straight, has had little wear, has no dings, and plays very nicely. Tuners are the excellent Overwater std tuners. There are a couple of small extra holes drilled at the rear of the headstock as someone has obviously fitted a detuner at some point. 17.
anyone use this to help mould a dirty signal? just thinking of something like this at the end of all my pedals to add a bit of eq and bass boost, and its smaller than both the aggie and sansamp di's plus i dnt need the dist from those. andy
I reckon it would be ideal for that.
18. Just to add to the Knightfall love, I run two of them for different levels of dirt. I have tried virtually everything out there that could be considered as a competitor and nothing has knocked the Knightfalls out of their positions on my board. They are just so organically musical and yet retain good attack, which IME has been a hard thing for manufacturers to find. I will add that the output from the KNightfall is very mid heavy. I have a parametric EQ running after, chopping out a good portion somewhere around 400-600 Hz. Without this I would not like the pedal. I also find that running the KNightfalls through a blend pedal (blend is obviously already there in the "66" version) is almost essential to get the best out of the pedal. They really are quite remarkable OD pedals.
19.
This: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bass-Collection-SB310-SGC-Nanyo-Bass-Guitar-Made-in-Japan-free-shipping-/111389715134?ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:GB:3160 Or this!: http://www.gumtree.com/p/for-sale/ibanez-atk-400-bass/1066743076
I ended up getting this .... http://basschat.co.uk/topic/239524-unique-bitsa-thunder-jet-ray-sold/page__p__2482325__hl__thunder__fromsearch__1#entry2482325 Very pleased.
20. Bought a bass from Paul. A challenging transaction for us both as the bass unfortunately received some damage whilst with the courier. But, Paul was very reasonable throughout and made the potentially difficult situation easy to resolve, which we did in a manner very acceptable to us both. I would be happy to deal with Paul again.
21. Incredibly awesome pedal name !!!!!
22.
As we discussed in the Fender vs Squier thread the woods do nothing to the tone and hence it could be made of cardboard provided the pickups and electronics where good quality
You seem to state it as though we were all in complete agreement on the matter, which is of course nonsense.
23. Cool, bring it on ! I like the blue, personally.
24.
Any trades at all?
What ya got ? AT the moment I could be interested in a Jazz neck, or some interesting pickups, or another dirt pedal .... or ....
