1.
Thanks for replies. What makes me think I want a Precision may sound silly, but years ago I used to own an Encore P bass copy and I have never had a better recorded bass tone than that bass believe it or not, even though I've owned "better" basses. So I'm hoping a decent precision is what I would like to get sounds I want. Or maybe I need to get another Encore P?!
Some cheap P's can sound absolutely magic. I think it's a function of the basic Fender design that simply "works". Play a load of them and you're bound to find a gem eventually.
 2. I loved my old Energy. Played like a dream. If I got another I'd change the preamp straight though. I loved the hyperactive pickups but the preamp has a huge mid scoop built in. Wish I'd been into customising basses back then, I'd have done just that and had an outstanding bass. As it was I just moved it on for a pittance.
 3. IMO, the 400 series Yamahas will never quite get the Precision tone. They are more versatile due to having the two pickups but getting that exact P sound - they're not quite there. A key part of this equation is that the neck pickup on the Yamaha is a bit nearer the neck that the Fender P sweetspot, so the tone from that pickup will always be a bit rounder and darker than most P's. I think the Yamahas are great basses ..... but they are not a Precision. So, in answer .... If you think the Precision sound fits what you are looking for, then get a Precision. I can't comment on the CV as I've not owned one or even played one for more than a few notes. Simply play as many Precisions as you can and choose the best one. The quality of the body and neck woods and the efficacy of the neck/body joint will have a large effect on the tone of each one. Thankfully, quality P pickups can be pickup up for only a few quid so I'd simply pick the one that is the most resonant and simply feels the most "right" in your hands. They're all different. Oh, and a final comment .... try and avoid Basswood bodies. IMO they do not make a nice P at all. Ideally Ash (with Rosewood board) or Alder (with maple board) to get the ideal balance of "spank", "guts" and "heft" (which are all completely useless and subjective terms I know).
 4.
..... and that you're not trying to get a driven/distorted tone, in which case valve heads win every time.
In contrast, my favourite bass overdrive and distortion sounds have always come from solid state units. Valve overdrive always seems a bit "flubby" and somehow lacking in attack for me. For guitar, I'll go with valve all day but for bass, it's SS.
 5. Mid cut centred somewhere around the 200-600 Hz range. And/or hi mid boost centred somewhere around the 1000-1500Hz range. In fact I'd start with just the upper mid boost and only cut lower mids if necessary as you will get lost in the mix if you cut lower mids too far. Treble and bass to taste. I'd start with the J bass, both pickups full on. I "think" that might be the sort of tone you might be describing. I have the NX2 cab myself and that should be fine, tweeter control about midday upwards if you want it bright & cutting.
 6. Sold a pedal to Dave. Superb communications throughout. Thoroughly easy, easy deal. Thanks mate !
 7. sorry WITHDRAWN For sale is my last Westone Thunder 1a part. It's a 1986 MIJ thunder 1a body, but heavily modified. Firstly I've re-finished it in a lovely light green. It's not a pro finish, but is still very decent indeed. It has a few minor scuffs but no major dings or scratches at all. The body is typical thunder 1, with a walnut and maple spine with ash wings. Lovely, high Matsumoku quality, well-aged tonewoods. I have also played about a lot with pickups on this body, and there is a large rout underneath the (custom) WBW pickguard, which as you can see is configured for two precision pickups. The control cavity is large and will accommodate a variety of electronics should you wish, and as you can see it has a number of holes for controls (you can of course fit dummy knobs and switches in any you might not use). The body comes with the pickguard, the rear control cavity cover and the rear battery compartment cover. Oh, and also it's original "Westone, Matsumoku made, made in Japan" neck chrome neck plate. One of the great things about this body is that it fits standard Fender-sized J and P necks. The neck heel slot is bang on 63mm at it's widest point. The hole pattern is also of the Fender dimensions, although you might well need to drill new holes in your neck to fit. The pics show all angles of the body, plus it made up with a Fender P-type neck. These Thunders also generally have lovely figuring to the Ash grain to them. I can't remember what this particular one was like unfortunately. However, I have also added a couple of pictures of another Thunder body (repeat - NOT this particular body) that I have stripped and refinished in oil and wax. As you can see they come up beautifully like that. It's a lovely resonant thing and gives a tight and broad tone with prominent lower mids. The black marks around the strap button holes are actually just fluff stuck there from the felt washers I had used. £65 posted to your door within the UK. 10. Sounds good to me. But .... I'd recommend considering power-scaling instead of the switchable power amp outputs. 50W really still is VERY loud, and if you are wanting it to double as a home/recording amp too then power-scaling really is the dogs-b0ll0cks. Martin is also an expert installer of power-scaling so it's a double win situation ! Years ago I had a JTM45 clone built by martin with the power-scaling. It really worked very, very well. I don't know about how it would go with KT88's though. Obviously Martin can advise you there. As for the pre-amp voicings well that can neither be good nor bad, that's just personal choice. For me, I'd rather focus on one high quality clean channel and then use pedals for my grit. In my experience working with an expert pedal builder (like COG effects) will be able to fine-tune your dirt requirements much more accurately than a tube-based pre-amp will. But if you're committed to an "all tube" dirt/pre-amp/power amp setup then good for you.
 11.
Nope ):
Bugger. OK, I've now tried hosting it on two different sites and putting various types of sharing links up. Hopefully at least one of them will work for you. If someone could post or PM me about whether they can see the pics now I'd appreciate it. Thanks.
 12.
There was but it is not working now
Hmm. That's odd. I'll try hosting it somewhere else. Is that any better ??
 13.
Any chance of some pics?
There is a pic on the first post. If you can't access the image for some reason, PM me your email and I will email it to you
 14. SOLD Bought on 6th March, so absolutely immaculate. Not a mark on it. Velcro on the bottom currently but rubber feet also included. This is a cracking octaver with good adjustability but, ultimately, is not the right pedal for what I'm looking to do. I keep buying octavers but moving them quickly on. One day I will learn that they are not for me ! On my bass this tracks (and holds) beautifully down to low F. YMMV of course. £85 posted to you within mainland UK. 15. SOLD For sale, a Schecter 2 band (bass and treble) preamp from a Schecter 004 bass. 4 knobs, vol, blend, bass and treble. Vol pot is a push-pull for EQ bypass. Low noise floor, really good active blend (no volume loss at 50:50). Does what is says on the tin. Runs from the usual 9V battery (not supplied). £25 posted to you in mainland UK. I'll even throw in a set of 4 silver knobs for free. 16. The biggest problem with any Cort (and many other brands) is that you lose 60% of the value as you walk out of the shop. Resale value is disastrous on them generally.
 17.
I'd be pretty careful about this, Spirit based wood dyes penetrate a long way into timber and Ash is quite porous, you won't be able to sand it out. Practice on some scraps of ash first. If you don't have any Yandles have big boxes full of off-cuts which they might post to you http://www.yandles.co.uk/ .
Thanks for the advice. The dye I have is water based, so hopefully won't penetrate too far. I don't have any offcuts as I am buying the body ready made. I might well approach a local sawmill and see if they have anything suitable for me to practice on. I hadn't thought of that before.
 18. Lovely. But it's gotta be tort or black pickguard on that. It's the law.
 19.
I've seen grain enhancement done by lightly charring(!!!!!) with a blowtorch & sanding back........very effective though.
Oooooh Matron ! That sounds a bit high risk for me.
I think there is some info on the dirty ash finish in the ACG threads in the Affliliates section but I can't locate it at the moment. My bass has a lacquer finish on top of the stain. You can still feel the grain though.
I've had a thorough search through the threads and there's nothing there unfortunately. I would suspect that Alan will be keeping his specific process a bit of a secret. I would if I were him, as it seems pretty unique.
 20. If it sounds great as it is, imagine how great it will sound if you extend it's abilities with extra pickups etc. I'd mod it ! Headstock looks cool. But then no-one ever agrees with me on here
