1. SOLD Yamaha RBX270J in yellow natural satin. Only about 8 months old. Still in superb condition. Professionally set up. Great playing and versatile instrument. One or two tiny little dinks, but you have to look very hard to find them. Pretty much immaculate really. I do not really want to sell this as it plays just so well, but I need money to fund a rather unhealthy new obsession with 80's Japanese basses, so this must go. The pictures of the bass show it loaded with a pretty serious pickup upgrade, of a Dimarzio humcancelling ULtra jazz pickup in the bridge position and a Wilkinson WBP vintage alnico V precision pickup in the neck position. I rate this PJ pickup combination very highly, and with those upgraded pickups installed, the price is £155. The price of £110 is with the original pickups re-installed - see original pickups in separate picture. Controls are the standard master volume, pickup blend and tone. As an extra is a custom thumbrest in between the two pickups. Alder body, maple neck and rosewood fingerboard. Good woods, but still a nice light bass. Comes with a thin gigbag. The quoted prices are for collection, but I am happy to post and am experienced in doing so. Postage within mainland UK would cost £12. Bass would be double boxed with ample padding. 2. Lovely bass !
3.
I played one of these today and loved it. Lovely neck, very easy to play and sounds awesome. Good price too. I think this will definitely replace my Tanglewaters (which are great, but big and heavy).
They really are something a bit special for this price range IMO. Just wait until the word spreads !
4. Either way, it's a good result !
5. I suspect that would be fine. Usually PA gear is fine for amplifying bass guitar, although PA cabs are often a little light on bass frequencies (obviously not including subs here !), and the speakers often do not handle high volume low frequencies as easily. I'd be amazed if your Yamaha mixer needed a minimum ohmage each side of more than 8, so I'm sure you'll be fine there. Should be a useable backup for sure. Whether you like the tone will be a personal thing. I use PA gear a lot as my main source of bass amplification
6.
but there is a massive volume drop!
That's not right. Along with it's other issues, I'd ask for a replacement.
7.
He did and I now have it up for sale http://basschat.co.u...13#entry2196713
Lol, beat me to it !
8. The SFX red dragon does that nicely. Won't change the tonality of your bass, just adds whatever level of gentle underlying overdrive that you want. All in a very vintage way. However, my favourite for low drive is the Barber Gain Changer, although I have to admit it does cut lows a tiny bit. No problem for me, but if your rig is a bit shy on lows it would not be for you. It's a more modern sound than the SFX and keeps note attack much better. Not better just different. A lower budget pedal that does the job brilliantly is the Ashdown Lomenzo hyperdrive. However it must be said that it needs to be an always on pedal as, by it's design, when on it will cut lows compared to the bypassed signal
9. bump for a top quality bass at very reasonable money. If I had £450 spare it would be mine !
10.
Try loads of basses, individually. Regardless of manufacturing tolerances, they are made of fundamentally inconsistent material, so the real top cream of the crop bit is going to be down to chance.
this
11. It's one of the absolute beauties of the Precision pickup, that you can adjust to get each string volume balanced, as each string has it's own "end" of one of the two pickup pieces. Mine generally end up with the low E up as high as it can go without the string actually hitting the pickup when I really dig in hard (and I do dig in very hard indeed). The pickups under the A and D seem to need to be much closer to the strings to get the same volume as the low E. The part of the pickup under the G then generally slopes a bit further away from the pickup than it's "other end" under the D. So for me, and my playing style, that is what gives me best volume balance string to string and decent pickup output.
12.
it's a good bass for 500/600€ ?
Definitely.
13.
[sup][sup][sup]A Westone/Kay/Vantage bastard offspring.[/sup][/sup][/sup]
I think you are right. The Matsumoku factory seemed to put out a lot of similar basses based on the same layout and bodies, under different brand names during the early 80's. On that particular bass, I like the fact that the P pickup is nearer the bridge than a Fender P. Not so sure on the "nipple" at the rear strap button end of the body !
14. I'm not usually impressed by fancy woods but that's a stunning fretboard.
15. I'm in the process of doing my first re-finish. Using acrylic colour spray paint. Getting the colour on seems OK, but I know I need to (and would like to) finish with a hard-wearing clear coat. I have searched and searched but everyone just seems to use the term "clear lacquer". What exactly is this mythical stuff ? Halfords do a clear acrylic based lacquer ..... http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_203865_langId_-1_categoryId_165495 Or there's a polyurethane varnish, like this .... http://www.amazon.co.uk/Plasti-kote-400ml-Varnish-Clear-Gloss/dp/B001GU4CKW Or there's nitro-cellulose ?? I'm not after a perfect, perfect finish, but would like an easy to work with product, as it is my first time. Would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks.
16. Sounds like a shocking system that is well avoided. I'm glad you brought it to my notice !
17. Are you sure you are not confusing this with USA sellers who will ship to you internationally using some super fast courier and in their listing will state "no customs charge at point of delivery to you", or some such phrase. What they don't say is that you will just get the import tax bill in the post later ! It's a bit manipulative IMO. You still get to pay the tax, just not actually at the time they deliver to you, or collect it.
18. I have built rigs based on both philosophies. For ultimate tonal excellence, it's got to be single pedals all the way, especially if you are a dirt lover like me. However, I used a Line6 HD500 for a while and it was really good, even the dirt on it. Complicated but still useable. A million times better than any other bass-specific unit I have tried. I was very impressed with it.
19. Just got this from danweb22 here. It's a superb pedal, but just too similar to something I already have, so now available for just £92 posted to you in mainland UK for a quick sale. I'll happily ship to the EU for £96. Has the standard gain, tone and level knobs, plus a high quality DI XLR output. One of the very best pedals I have ever used for fattening up sterile clean tones and also giving a genuine vintage "tube-like" break up, if you take the gain higher. Really low noise floor. Highest quality construction. Great tone ! This vid of another custom dual Red dragon sounds identical to this one.
20. I spotted that as well. I'm sure it's a Matsumoku model too. Great price for someone !
21.
The problem with passive basses and long cables isn't losing signal due to resistance of the cable but the loss of high frequency signals due to the cable capacitance. The guitar output impedance (typically 250 k) means that when the cable capacitance gets near to 1nF (typical of a lot of 5 metre cables) the RC combination forms a low pass filter with the 3dB roll off at 630 Hz - this is the main cause of the audible difference in sound quality.....in extreme cases the tone control on say a Fender Jazz bass will seem to have no effect. OBBM use Klotz AC110 cable with a capacitance of less than 75pF per metre, this is about as good as I have seen and would mean that a 5 metre cable is still useable on a passive bass. The alternative is to go for an active bass with a low output impedance, but the preamp does add a bit to the sound.
OK, thanks for that Sid. Thanks I understand most of that. Still leaves me puzzled as to why I have one passive bass that seems to be really sensitive to tone loss with longer cables and one passive bass that doesn't. And this is comparing with exactly the same cables.
22. I'd try it into the normal bass input and also into the FX return. See which way sounds better. Be aware that your amp's master volume will probably not work if you plug the tonehammer into the FX return (depends on the layout of the amp) so you will probably need to control your volume with the output volume from the tonehammer in that instance. I mention that to avoid killing your ears when you first plug it in and find yourself at full volume !
23. Did a pedal trade via Royal Mail with Dan. Smooth, smooth transaction. All as it should be. Pedal was exactly as described and great comms by Dan. Highly recommended to deal with.
