1.
I guess it depends how you want to use the preamp. If you are looking for a clean tone then the Aguilar would be a great choice. Dirty tone, nothing beats the B7K or even comes close for me, and I reckon iv tried all of them. But of course, totally depends on the player, bass and amp
The B3/7K is unbeatable for a certain type of dirty tone, but it does very much have an inbuilt voice and it does that "voice" impeccably. However, there are so many other dirty tones it cannot do. It is not the be all and end all. In fact there is no "be all and end all" dirt generator pedal/pre-amp. All these different dirt tones require different approaches to make them. I guess once Fractal or some other uber-high tech company do a latest generation Bass-specific modeller we will then start to get that type of thing for bass.
2. Howard is "the man" !
3. Ummm ..... strings ? Have you changed them in the time you have been playing bass ? As time goes on (and your body juices reek havoc with your strings) they will get dull and lose a lot of tone. If your base tone has a lot of treble and clank in it to cut through, you will lose a hell of a lot of that as the strings age.
4. I guess it all depends on how hard you are having to push your current amp on a regular basis. What is the amp ? Some have a rep of being able to take abuse more than others. ON another note, wouldn't it be cheaper (and probably more effective in terms of volume) to buy another 8 ohm cab to both increase your speaker area and allow the amp to run at 4 ohms ?
5.
Can someone please tell me more about the differences in sound of the P vs J on the bridge position? Never had the pleasure os trying a double P config bass.
On mine, it's simply meatier and more solid than a Jazz pickup in that position. Yet the P still retains all the character that a humbucker in that position loses to my ear. The 50:50 blend is particularly more pleasing to my ear than the same on a PJ, where there is usually a significant volume drop-out going from 100% neck to the 50:50 blend. The bridge P still does a decent "burp" jazz tone but require far less bass boosting to compensate for the inherent lack of bass frequencies in a J pickup in that position. For the life of me I cannot fathom why the double P is not more popular. BTW, nice double P's guys ! Chaypup, is the neck P on the Westone still in the "Fender P" sweetspot ? Or have they shifted it towards the neck a bit. From the pics it looks like it still in the traditional position, although it is difficult to tell just looking at it, due to the Westone's very different shape, layout and fretboard length etc.
6.
I wonder if many people have even a "short term experience" with the ABM 1000. The bigger stores I check ( Musician's Friend ) haven't got them yet. There is still a mystery head listed. It has two valves, a ABM 500 power stage, and will cost about $830 if it arrives at the store. I might like one better than my MAG 600...
That "mystery head" is the Little Bastard 550. Basically, a Little bastard 30 pre-amp mated with the ABM500's power section. They have been around in the UK for a while (as in more than a year). I thought they only made 100, or something like that, so you may not ever get any over there. I haven't played one but they haven't exactly been hugely successful here in the UK. BTW, this forum is not US-centric at all so you will potentially confuse a lot of folks unless you specify which "Birmingham" you live in (and I am making an educated guess that it may not be in Europe). The "real" Birmingham obviously being the one somewhere between Manchester and London.
7. I bought an expensive pedal from Graeme. He packed it all up well, sent it special delivery and it arrived the next day. Easy, easy transaction. Top fella to deal with !
8. I feel a need for a dedicated thread for the worship of this superb pickup configuration. I know of some "double P's", but would love to know about a few more as, at some time, I would like to own another. Here's my current one (an Aria Pro II M-series) ...... 9.
BC Rich Eagle
Ah, of course. I'm aware that they still do a number of double P pickup pointy basses. Of the current ones, the Mockingbird is the least "odd" one I suppose. I think I could almost see myself playing one of those. Will have a look around for the Eagle's. I guess they are US-made and expensive ??
10.
Sorry to tell you this mate, but your ad will get pulled due to the new Rickruling. The Marketplace is now a RIC and RICFaker free zone due to John Hall's aggressive threats of legal action.
Pretty sure this does not apply to currently runninng ads though, which will be allowed to run to their conclusion.
11.
Lot of time for the P/P format, this one is mine:
Lovely. What is it ? 80's I'm sure. Jap ?
12. now SOLD Absolutely mint, unmarked, RH450. Bought new by myself on 21/03/2013. Never gigged. Plus mint RC4 footswitch, plus long connecting cable. Incredibly powerful feature set and LOUD. However, I think I am simply not really up to getting the best from the complex and powerful EQ. I tend to fiddle and tweak and not really know what I'm doing. So I have decided to move on to a much simpler GK MB500. I shall miss the 3 preset memories (and the compressor, and the tuner, and the tubetone !) of the RH but anyway, I am pretty much a set it and forget it man anyway. The MB500 does what I need and in a simple, idiot-friendly manner. This RH450 is in 100% perfect condition and functions 100% as new. The amp and footswitch delivered to your door in mainland UK for £475. Still have the excellent TC packaging to send the amp in. I would sell the footswitch separately for £89 posted, but not the amp separately. Any price would be slightly reduced for a collection from the Southampton area. As you can see from the pics, the amp has also had the Siamese checkover and seal of approval ! 13.
I like that. A lot. Tell me more
Not wanting to derail the thread, all the details are here ....... http://basschat.co.uk/topic/209202-aria-pro-ii-m-series-now-with-pics/page__p__2103197__hl__aria__fromsearch__1#entry2103197
14. In your position, definitely the PA.
15. I completely agree on the double P route. My favourite layout, and the combo on my main bass. However, A PJ can also work very well indeed if the pickups are chosen well to complement each other. A nice, hot, hum-free J in the bridge position balances nicely (and noiselessly) with a vintage-type P pickup in the neck position. And as we're showing double P's, here's mine !
16. The Overkills, playing punchy rock/alt/indie/classic covers are playing at the George, in Fair Oak, near Southampton on sat 15th June. WIll start about 8.45-9 I guess. I will be sporting my MB500/2xRS210 rig for anyone interested !
17. Sold a pickup to the "Doc". Easy deal with Howard, as always. Top bloke.
18.
Amp is back and fixed, new tube socket. Very happy with tech, very quick and inexpensive, would recommend to anyone in the Bournemouth Poole area, thanks again for the suggestions
Just for info, for the rest of us, who is this wonderful person ?
19. I have just put a Dimarzio Ultra Jazz into a PJ with a fairly standard vintage-level output P pickup and it matches beautifully volume-wise. Hum-free too. Thoroughly recommended here.
20. Bought a pickup from David. It was in great condition and he sent it off exactly when he said he would, packaged safely. Top fella to deal with. Thanks mate !!!
21. YYYEEESSSS. We have some fellow believers !
22. Beautiful .... slightly jealous here.
23. I like what you did there. Duck Dunn .... (Donald Duck) Dunn ...... Donald Dunn. Either that, or Lakland have a model I'm unaware of ! Edit .... Have just discovered that Duck Dunn's real first name is Donald (no surprise I guess)
24. At last ! Someone (Badass ?) has got a bargain !
