1.
you should try the vintage microtubes! i can never turn it off!
I did. Not my thing at all. Souded all woolly and, well, "vintage" to me. Not my thing.
2. I'd go for one vol, one tone and a 3 way mini switch for series/parallel/single coil. The switch would wire like this ..... http://www.guitarele...h-Parallel.html Pretty straightforward if you have any experience at wielding a soldering iron at all. On that particular pickup (I have one) for the wiring diagram I have linked to, the equivalent of North start is Green, North finish is Red, South start is Black, South finish is white.
3.
I've changed the switch and put Black screws in since this was taken. I was going to change the Pick ups but the stock ones are beasts. Love the stripes on yours.
All black ..... classy !
4. Now SOLD For sale is my fairly newly aquired Retrovibe RV4. I have been dabbling in Musicman-pickup type basses recently, but have simply decided that I love P basses and that's that, so I want another P, or PJ. Since I bought this bass from LowEndBee I have added the rather cool go faster stripes (which will come off if you would rather it without), have changed the bridge pickup to a Seymour Duncan Basslines SMB-4d (a quite considerable sonic upgrade IMO), and added a mini toggle for series/parallel/single coil switching for this pickup. The standard Retrovibe neck pickup on this bass already had a control added, allowing series humbucker or single coil use. So with all these coil switching and pickup combination options, you can see that this bass is a bit versatile. It actually sounds great, and does a good impression of a range of other basses. The nut width is 42mm, but the neck is relatively shallow (front to back) so is not too much of a handful. I find it very comfortable actually, and I often do struggle with large nut widths on other basses. Weight is somewhere between 3.5 and 4kg (I do not trust my bathroom scales to be any more accurate than that). The neck is straight and the truss rod works perfectly. It is set up perfectly for my rather heavy handed technique. Intonation is perfect. There are no dead spots. Fretwork seems good and there is minimal fret wear. The sharks teeth on the fretboard are proper inlays. Pots, Switch and Jack have been replaced with Switchcraft ones. There are a couple of marks around the body of the bass. Nothing hugely significant, except for one noticeable ding right on the edge of the front side, right under where your right arm would sit, which is now beautifully covered up with one of the stripes (shown pretty clearly in one of the pics). As a whole the bass looks very smart. I cannot post pics of the headstock here for legal reasons, but rest assured it is of the typcial "classic 70's bass" type. I will be happy to email anyone pics of the whole bass pics, including close ups of the headstock front and back. Need to sell now to help fund a new precision bass purchase. Price for a sale is £235 posted to your door within mainland UK. Sorry no trades. OK, here's the pics .... 5. Well, I've been through a shed load of gear over the last year or two, and rehearsing last night with my new (used) B3K was a revelation. What do they put in this thing, it must be illegal it's so good. It was hard to get a bad sound out of it with a precision bass. What ever amp settings you use there's this grunty, gnarliness somewhere in upper mids, lower treble area (I have struggled to accurately define what is actually going on, hence my suspicions about magic of some kind). For modern rock-based music it is utterly unbeatable. I have used so, so many other quality similar dirt box out there and nothing else does it like this one. I had a B7K in the past, which I liked a lot, but didn't play a P bass at the time. One of these Darkglass B?K's with a P is incredible though. That is all.
6. How do I get to read it in English ?
7. Bought a pedal from Bob, who sent it well packed, in a timely manner and in great condirion. Reliable and recommended bloke.
8.
Hello! Would you do a bit of discount for someone who came to your door and picked up this wonderful pedal? I'm in Southampton about 2 times a week
Yep sure. £44 for collection. I'm in North Baddesley, just out of Southampton, towards Romsey. PM me if you're interested.
9. For folks who want more of a single coil vibe from their soapbar-equipped bass. What's to miss ? Very similar to the ethos of the Nordy Big Single, which seems pretty popular.
10.
Bl**dy good pedal this! Excellent bc'er too
Thanks Andy ........ and obviously a bump now too.
11. As for good 2x10 cabs I can recommend the TC Electronic RS210's. Nice, tall stack, not too heavy, very sensitive (ie. loud for the wattage in), and ample bottom end for virtually anyone. You've made a good choice with the Darkglass, it's a complete class above the VT bass IMHO and, yes, I have owned both.
12. Personally, I find the lines actually interfere with my brain visually with fretless, making the whole fingerboard look too busy. So I actually prefer unlined, and did right from the start of learning the instrument.
13. One man's "warm" is another man's "boomy". The idea of bypassing the Streamliner's pre is a good one for the specific use the OP has in mind. Compared to "most" amps the Streamliner is noticeably mid-scooped, intolerably so for me, whatever I did. But then we're all looking for different tones. To the OP - I'm assuming that you've read the enormous EQing thread on Talkbass ...... http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f15/genz-streamliner-600-900-tone-control-primer-813663/ Where real measurements with real instruments and frequency analysis confirm that the Streamliner is mid-scooped. Anyway, if you read the thread it is an invaluable resource for any Streamliner owner.
14. Try searching or asking over on Talkbass, if no-one has done it here. Good luck.
15.
That looks dead cool. Did you stripe the headstock too?
I didn't in the end. Had a good think about it but there didn't seem room to do it easily to be honest. And, of course, I'm not allowed to show the headstock here or we'll all go to prison.
16. Just pimped up my new (old) Retrovibe RV4 (mainly to cover a ding), but I think it looks pretty cool in a showy-off sort of way. So lets start a thread. Everyone remember to keep Ric-looking headstocks out of the pics.
17. Sorry gents. I got in there first. But have no fear, the rate I seem to get through gear, it will probably be up for sale again by me in a week or two !
18.
I`d chweck out the Fender Rumble amps. They have a great warm rich sound, and have a nice gain control on them. Sound great with a Precision.
I used to have a 60W rumble combo a while back and it, in no way, was comparable in quality with something like an Ashdown Little Bastard and a decent small cab. The rumble was good for the price, but that's all. For, the OP, if you are planning to use the amp/cab/combo at all for any band events/rehearsals, then I would really be looking at getting a 200W minimum system with 2x10 speaker capability. I'd say that would be minimum for coping with a moderate volume guitar and drums band. If you want it to sound great at low volume too, I'd seriously look at something like a GK MB200, or Ampeg PF350 , with a smallish 2x10 or 2x12 cab and then get your grind and drive from pedals. Gives you options for LOUD when you need it, but should sound excellent at low volume too. Even for low volume, though, a larger cab will give you a fuller, "bigger" sound. How portable do you need/want your new rig to be ? I'd be tempted to keep your current cab if size and weight is not an issue (as used heavy cabs do not hold their value well), then change the big old Ampeg amp for something more moderate. It's another option anyway.
19.
Missed the end of the auction. Bargain price
Yup someone got a bargain. Think I could have sold it for more than £28.50 on here, which is effectively what I will get after fees. Someone remind me to only use Feebay as a very, very last resort !
20. Bought a bass via courier delivery from Ad. He sent it on the day promised. The courier managed to damage to bass by courier but Ad offered a small partial refund in compensation, which I was happy with. The situation was dealt with swiftly and with integrity. The bass (apart from the new ding) was absolutely as described. Easy deal really.
21. Hmmmm. Got it today. Pretty cack (ie. bad, for those outside the UK) on bass IMO. I'll move it on to a guitarist. The demo's on a guitar sound superb.
22.
I could put it in a hard case and ship it. £30 inc case? Need to find some pack packaging though!
THat's the spirit ! Best alter your OP so people are instantly aware of it . I really would buy this if I could justify it in any way. Tell us .... how "precisiony" is the neck pickup soloed ?
